After lambasting caravans over the years, the team embark on a caravanning holiday in Dorset. With the help of the Totyota Formula One Team, The Stig and a very large building, the lads try to find out how fast you can drive indoors. Film star Brian Cox is the Star in the Reasonably Priced Car, plus there's test-drives for the Vauxhall VXR, Mazda 6 MPS and Mondeo ST220.

Not an extraordinary line-up :? But they usually succeed in turning even worst cars into a great show

nickthaskater 07-06-2006 04:18 AM

I'm still praying they pull out and surprise us with a Veyron test on their track

speaking of that, there have been some rumors around the net about VW letting the TG boys test the Veyron around the track after the World cup finishes. nothing official so far.

nickthaskater 07-06-2006 04:57 AM

Yea I know about the rumours, that's what I was referring to haha :P

nickthaskater 07-06-2006 06:34 AM

After what happened with the CCX, I think the chances took a nose dive... </3

saadie 07-06-2006 06:42 AM

lol .... not really ....
the crash proved how safe the car is ..for drivers ;) .. .
big copanies dont look at small negetive aspects :P

nickthaskater 07-06-2006 06:45 AM

Running into a tire wall isn't exactly life threatening, but it did damage the car, and I doubt Bugatti would be very keen on handing over a car with even more power, and one that is worth twice as much, with a good chance of it getting damaged.

martin100 07-06-2006 07:02 AM

Even if the ep doesn´t sound that good i´m sure they´ll somehow manage to make it VERY entertaining as always. It can only get better then the last 5th Gear eps of course.

nickthaskater 07-06-2006 07:02 AM

I realize that, but it's the fact that he did it at all. I know if I were sitting at the head of Bugatti, that would've affected my decision of sending a Veyron over to TG to have them run the balls off of it. I mean, if they don't push the car, then there's really no point in sending it at all because the lap time would just be misleading.

McLaren4eVa 07-09-2006 07:02 AM

HAs anyone noticed how hard fifth gear are trying to make their episodes funny, first they try some silly monkey thing with tom when he was testing that hydrogen car and the most recent one was vicki making a public apology. IMO it isn't funny at all, just a pathetic attempt to compete with top gear.
Oh n this episode may not sound good but I'm sure it will be as funny as every other ep even if the cars aren't super fast. Besides looking forward to the toyota f1 indoor driving bit.

Pics from this weeks feature Stiggy and the Toyota F1 car

** Major Spoiler Warning **

Quote:

In the space of just over a week, Toyota's Formula 1 activities have taken it from the legendary wide open banking of Indianapolis to a course just 384 metres long inside ExCeL, the new home of the British International Motor Show. The vast exhibition hall in London's Docklands was the arena for the UK's first indoor F1 trial on Monday, with the Panasonic Toyota Racing TF105 demonstrating its prodigious straight-line acceleration and braking power for BBC Television's Top Gear programme.

As a high-octane curtain-raiser for Toyota's contribution to this year's motor show, the test has no equal. Piloted by "The Stig", the V10-powered TF105 was tweaked to cope with the exceptional conditions, not least the ultra-smooth surface. Slick Bridgestone tyres were fitted, gear ratios were adjusted, brakes were pre-warmed, maximum revs were reduced from around 19,000 to 16,000 and the car's traction control system was working at full capacity.

Just how the race car performed, compared to Top Gear's more modest "Reasonably Priced Car", will be revealed in the programme scheduled for transmission at 8.00pm on BBC2 on Sunday, 16 July. The same day, in the real world of Grand Prix competition, Panasonic Toyota Racing will be looking to build on its impressive showing at Indianapolis, where Jarno Trulli claimed an impressive fourth place result, and challenge for a podium finish at the French Grand Prix.

Last weekend, the Toyota TF105 thrilled the crowds at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, with official test driver Ricardo Zonta at the wheel. The F1 car ran a total of six times on the famous hill climb, with the last run reserved for the customary tyre tread laying 'burnout'.

Sunday nights haven't been the same since the footie started, but now all the blood, sweat, diving and headbutts are finished Top Gear is back to entertain you.

This week Jeremy tests some hot boring saloons, the Stig drives an F1 car (indoors), Hollywood actor Brian Cox is let loose in the Lacetti and the boys go, er, on a caravanning holiday to Dorset. Here's some more info:

In the news...
Jeremy and Richard spend a long time arguing about American muscle cars - no prizes for guessing which corner Clarkson's in...

The lads also discuss the recent influx of folding metal drop-tops and how Volvo managed to get an endorsement from Jesus (well, kind of - the pope has just bought himself an XC90).

And finally, a new survey has revealed that people who have speed indicators in their cars receive less penalty points - couldn't have predicted that one, could you?

Rep Race...
Jeremy starts the show this week with three family saloons - but don't switch off, they've got over 700bhp between them. His mission is to find out which beefed-up boring saloon is best - Mondeo ST200, Mazda6 MPS or Vectra VXR.

We're all going on a miserable holiday...
Three men in boat may work but three in a caravan doesn't. TG is not famed for its love of caravans, but the boys decided if you can't beat them, join them - at least for a weekend.

Dorset was their destination, but with Captain Slow at the wheel things go from bad to worse and then really bad. James has an encounter with a bollard, Richard gets kidnapped and the TG dog chucks up in the van. Oh, and then Jeremy decides to cook...

Star in a reasonably priced car...
This week's star in a reasonably priced car is Hollywood actor Brian Cox - think Troy, Bourne Identity and the original Hannibal Lector).

The Stig stays indoors...
The British International Motor Show starts next week at the ExCel exhibition centre (we'll be there - find out who else is in our preview), but before they started to jam it full of shiny cars it was a big empty space crying out for a TG experiment. Cue the Stig in a F1 car (and the Lacetti for practice)

so it's official now, Jezza is not dead.

chest3r 07-13-2006 09:14 PM

^^ I'm pretty sure it was :?

vexor 07-13-2006 10:09 PM

sigh, if he was dead then it would be all ove the timesonline.co.uk website (he writes articles there) .... which it isn't.

Plus i heard somewhere, dun't remember where, that the TG episodes are filmed on wednesdays and then edited until they air on sundays on that respective week.

Daggernite 07-14-2006 06:25 AM

Yeah the studio footage is recorded just a couple of days before it airs so he cannot be dead unless hes talking from beyond the grave.

vexor 07-16-2006 10:26 PM

Just finished watching the episode.... and it was just the funnyest episode ever.

and what was Jezza thinking bringing that Ak-47 to a caravan trip? lol

joe2tiger 07-16-2006 10:40 PM

Fifth Gear is testing it on tomorrow's episode

Discussion Thread

draak666 07-17-2006 06:48 AM

Never thought I'd say this, but I look forward to the hot boring saloons. I want to know if all those upgrades make em woth the money. I have my doubts.

dannyroz 07-17-2006 02:43 PM

worst episode ever

Global Warming 07-17-2006 11:34 PM

So Clarkson drove through Alabama in a car with “Hillary for president” written on the side??? LOL

Global Warming 07-18-2006 12:41 AM

I said before that Top Gear was headed to be an MTV style reality show and it has in this latest episode!! That whole caravan bit was basically “Road Rules”. It was entirely scripted and they didn’t even try to sell it very hard! And it took up more that half the show!

Just terrible, I miss the old Top Gear. Fifth Gear is by far the better car show now without question!!

nickthaskater 07-18-2006 01:22 AM

What a farce of a show Top Gear has become... I chuckled here and there, but on the whole it was pretty much a boring crap fest. The Formula 1 test was the biggest let down in recent memory... And the fire? Yea, because that wasn't blatantly scripted or anything... The caravan beside them was vacant in every shot, and was obviously nothing more than a simple prop. The fire itself, well all JC had to do was take the pan outside and crisis averted.

/is happier with Fifth Gear

evoWalo 07-18-2006 01:45 AM

Have you folks tried calling James May? They flashed his number at the back of the caravan.

Global Warming 07-18-2006 02:00 AM

Did you notice how Clarkson criticized Hollywood and the movie “Die Hard” as being stupid and too “over the top”. Then he went on to participate in a third rate MTV rip off skit?!?! That fake “cast member friendship strained” nonsense was just about as bad as it gets!! And the dramatic music over all of it?

Anyone else see something wrong here?

RAMMIUS 07-18-2006 03:14 AM

Can somebody give more details about the F1 test ???

Numbers ?

They ran the reasonably priced Chevy in a straight line and clocked it at 70-something mph, then they had an extremely brief clip of the F1 car running in the same straight line, and it ended up doing 80-something mph (surface was too slick to put power down), and that was the end of the segment.

RAMMIUS 07-18-2006 03:59 AM

say what ? :? and they put that on the show ? wtf

I hope TG doesn`t go the same path as 5th Gear

Svensson 07-18-2006 04:45 AM

^ As Hammond said, at first they wanted to throw the footage away and forget about it, but then they discovered that there was no indoor speed record for cars and that they had just set the world record at 81 mph...

nickthaskater 07-18-2006 04:48 AM

Yea I understand keeping it due to setting a record (as lame as it may have been), but they could've at least done some doughnuts or something...

DeMoN 07-18-2006 10:38 AM

cant wait to see this, but being in Bolivia means I have to lol. Goddamn internet connection.

Yeha that was also what was so stupid. Why use a RWD car that rev to 1900 RPM on a slick surface? They should have used like an Evo or STi something that can put its power down on all 4 wheels and creates it’s at low revs. An STI would have set an even higher record.
