Rare 1929 Mercedes become world's second most expensive car

LONDON (AFP) - An ultra-rare 1929 Mercedes has become the second most expensive car the world has ever seen after selling at a British auction on Friday for 4.18 million pounds (6.16 million euros, 7.43 million dollars).

The 7.1 litre SSK sports car -- bought by a collector in 1941 for just 400 --was sold to an unidentified European phone bidder during the sale in Sussex, southeast England, auctioneers Bonhams said.

The Mercedes, in near-original condition, was one of 38 cars discovered in barns belonging to reclusive collector George Milligen, who died in May at the age of 94. His cars fetched more than six million pounds in all at the sale.

Milligan bought the two seater Mercedes for just 400 pounds in 1941, when German-made cars were -- understandably, during World War II -- very unfashionable, Bonhams said.

It was sold by Bonham's chairman Robert Brooks, who while working at another auction house, Christie's, also auctioned off the most expensive car ever, a 1931 Bugatti Royale, bought in 1987 for 5.5 million pounds.

A Ferrari 250 GTO sold for about $15 MM in the mad 80s. That was the most expensive car ever.

The 250GTO was bought by a japanesee for 10 million pounds... With that money, I would have bought a couple of McLarens, an Enzo, a F50, F40, Stradale, SLR, CGT... and a Mini Cooper S .
i woulda jus gone to mcdonalds and bought a happy meal

lol.

mind you, as funny as it seems, you all have to understand that the reason these cars cost so much is because of their connection to some part of human history. its like buying an antique one-of-a-kind mechanical sculpture.

the 250GTO sounds a stupid buy though, unless it was a very special one.

oldsnail 09-06-2004 04:48 AM

people just buy it as an art..
not likely the will drive it around.

i dont mind having one of those in my living room though

What 250 GTO isn't special?

Serious now, the 250 GTO that is being discussed here obviously had an impressive racing history. The numbers I see here vary somewhat, I recall a pricetag of $10 million.

martin100 09-06-2004 11:22 AM

Supercars.de sais it has a pricetag of 9.100.000 €...

hemi_fan 09-06-2004 11:30 AM

lol, id never spend that kind of money on a car. especially one that old. you cant even drive it!! come on... Id much rather get a Ford GT, or maybe a bit of a higher end sports car... but never something like this.
