Why the big price for the Apple Cinema Displays?
Really why?
I know the poofta crowd will think its just another hate thread but this is screens we are talking about. The Cinema screens use the same panels as most LGs, LG.Philips screens. They dont have any special features that I can read about. They look........Well thats personal preference. They dont look special to me. Just a white thin bezel. And they crack when you open them. THe acrylic side covers crack even when you do it with care. THat sucks, because I want to be able to open my stuff up. Anyone have one of these? What makes it worth the premium over a good LG or NEC or Samsung screen? |
Ya why are they so damn expensive? The 30 inch has a massively high resoultion so maybe thats why? But its still expensive even after the price drop!
|
well, for example, the Dell 20" display is made around 95% the same parts as the apple 20" display other then outside, then they are adjusted a small difference for company preference.
In the end these two displays are almost exactly the same, but there are people that are willing to pay $200 more for the apple for its looks! I personally like the apple displays design the best, so when I was looking to buy a nice monitor I ended up buying an HP one :) |
Well I just got an LG 20 inch.
I think it looks alright, however it does have an unnecessarily thick bezel. Funny part being it just an extra addon for looks, it could have been much narrower. But it still looks alright. And yea its true, Dell, Apple they all use LG.Philips screens. But the apple screens a 200 premium for looks  Besides, white wouldnt fit into my setup. |

It has been color calibrated from the factory. it has 2 ieee1394a ports & 2 usb2.0 ports A single cable extends from the back of the display and breaks out to connect DVI, USB 2.0, FireWire 400 and power. Eliminates cable clutter. SWOP certified DELL's 3007WFP 30-inch Wide-Screen Flat Panel LCD = $2199 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display = $1999 I'd go for a DELL UltraSharp 2407WFP 24-inch Widescreen Flat Panel so I can hook it up to my 360 @ 1080i & PC/Mac @ 1920x1200. It's cheaper than a half-assed HDTV without the useless accessories like a HD tuner & speakers. |
looks like the first review gave some good reasons. http://reviews.cnet.com/Apple_Cinema...-30964608.html to each their own. Quote:

It's been awhile since I read the article, but I believe Tomshardware.com found the performance to be mediocre.

The usb/firewire hubs are a nice feature but I personaly would rather have it seperate...Or rather none at all. I have 10 in my case. 8 at back and 2 at the front. I do like apple cable managment thats nicely taken care of. Toronto- I was refering to the colour white. Id much rather have one in black. Actually if I got one I think Id get it paited matt black. It would look killer. Anyway price difference seems smaller now. I just wanted to see if they had any "special" technology or features that justified the price difference. BTW what panels are they using now? The one i have in this LG is a 8ms IPS, 1:1400 16.8m colours 1680x1050 20.1" |

Just to make sure we're on the same page, is the photo below the display we're both talking about? Model M9177LL/A?
http://images.apple.com/displays/ima...op20060807.jpg I'm guessing they're using updated LG or Samsung Brightness (typical) 300 cd/m2 Contrast ratio (typical) 700:1 Response time (typical) 14 ms Pixel pitch 0.258 mm It also has a port for the Kensington lock & provisions for a Vesa mount. Quote:

Im surprised its 14ms. BTW I made a mistake in my previous post. This LG has 1:1400 contrast ratio. |
People pay extra for looks all the time. Just as one would pay extra for a special paint on a car.
|
^^you get what you pay for. :bah:
|
If it makes your life sipler & you make tens of thousands of dollars per project the price difference quickly melts away.
One wedding photo coverage could easily net you enough cash to buy a 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display. This is the goign rate in a developing country and what more over there. |
