Clutchless Porsche?

I was watching a best motoring and it showed an older style 911 with a manual trasnmission and no clutch.

Can someone explain this?

Yes I've seen them before.

It has an H pattern stick but no clutch. Coudlnt believe it when I saw it, was a very old model too.

Dunno anything about the technology involved though.

i've heard on occasion that porshe experimented with a form of the PDK on test cars...

sometimes even normal manuels that have clutches, but paddle shifts... that they've played around with quite a bit.

i dont really know the story here, tho... i wish i did... even the cup cars have clutches.

i want to say this was called Tiptronic, or something along those lines. Never studied it though.

Hi,

What you are talking about is called sportomatic. It's not an automatic transmission. It's a manual transmission with a dry clutch that's operated
by a contact in the shift lever. It also has a torque convertor so you can come to a stop while still in gear, or start off in a gear other than first.
Overall, acceleration suffers a bit but you still have the pleasure of banging it up and down through the gears without using a clutch.

If it was from Best Motoring I think that it was a Ruf and this transmission was indeed a manual without clutch :

Quote:

In 1992 the RUF BTR became available with the Electronic Clutch System, or EKS, which was developed in partnership with Fichtel and Sachs. EKS provides all the advantages of being able to enjoy the sportiness of shifting gears but without the tiresome clutch pedal in pesky stop-and-go traffic or in high speed conditions. It is sporty yet comfortable, with consistently flawless clutch engagement.

didn't VW have a clutchless stick in the 70's?

Saab had it in the early 90s on some of the 900 turbos (the shape that became the 93) - they called it sensomatic I think.

Not entirely sure how it worked (torque converter?) but it had a five speed stick and no clutch pedal.

Once I drove my 930 from Nevada City, CA to LA and back with NO clutch.

It can be done. I had to pick up the throw out bearing and had to go to LA, or wait.
