I do the File>Automate>HDR, then in 16bit-mode use the Photomatix Plugin on a new Layer. Sometimes I don't even go that way, I just convert the image to 16bit and use the Photomatix plugin on a new layer, like in this picture:

hmm, I'll just keep waiting for the sky to turn to interesting colors. I was too late for the sunset in this one. I'll have to try the HDR technique once I have more time (when semester ends.)
