Learning manual!
 

My friend is going to teach me how to drive a manual tranny tommorow! I'm excited, any tips?

ahh nice! i have learnt just last year. Tips are, that parents have no patients so smart move with the friend. You tihnk its all easy, but to get it smotth especially ona high powered car is not as easy as it looks. trust me you will repect people like tiff even more. But once you can do it, you wont forget

dont drop the clutch early and kill it, give it time, but dont over rev or continuously slip the clutch.

but also dont keep the clutch in... that was a problem with me to begging with, but its easy after a couple of tries :)

Tiff? What about the rest of us that have been driving manual for the last 20 odd years - I think we do pretty well ourselves... LOL ;)

I've driven manual all my life...I've avtually only driven 4 auto cars...and it sucks...

Practise makes perfect..Just enjoy learning to drive,it will eventually come to you.

The real way
1- Press the clutch all the way
2- put your right foot on the accelerator pedal but don't apply pressure at all..
3-gently remove your foot from the clutch very very gently
4- when you see the rpm drops below 1,000 rpm add little pressure to the throttle
5- keep the rpm steady for the lunch
6-By now you must be moving is not go to step 1 . :D .

By the way the 1,000 rpm depends on which car. some cars need to be higher some cars can be lower.. but I think that's avarage .. My Evo have to go to 3,000 rpm for a smooth lunch the mini at about 2,000. And my friend Nissan at about 1,500 rpm.. so see where the car starts to stall that's when you add power..

ps: what is the car your driving..

manual tranny... it takes one hour to learn and about 1week-month to perfect (considering u drive everyday)
the trick is balancing gas with the clutch... don't dump the clutch too fast but don't keep ur foot stomped into it neither...

the way i learned to balance clutch and gas it to keep the car steady uphill.. drive the car uphill 5 meters... then keep the car STILL (not moving) without using the break, by gas and clutch only... after u succeed, go up another 5 meters and repeat the process. after which u learn how to balance the clutch/gas u will learn how to take turns on second and not be frightened of traffic (maybe thast only me cuz i learned in new york city).

i know how 2 drive manual, but the more i think about it, i don't know how to explain it to someone

LOL, how come? Manual should be the only way to go :D I drove just an Auto in my life since my grandma owns one :D
With manual you have so many rewarding thing: perfect shifting, perfect revs and gear for every corner, heel-and-toe... just another point of contact between you and the machine beside the wheel.. while auto trannies could be faster than men and so on, you lose a very important link with your car IMO.

Im can drive manuel on a jeep right now and im 15. When you first start its a little frustrating stallin the car and everything. In the spring ill learn on a john cooperworks mini, then to my bros m3 :twisted:

Manuals are ssssssooooooooo much fun!!! All I can say is DON'T LET GO OF THE CLUTCH TOO SOON, unless you for some reason love to be jolted foreward :)

Heh... I thought this was a pretty dull topic and I was boredso hey, why not?Driving one myself, I actually DONT think manuals suck. :P

Well I guess you agree it's not that easy to explain on a forum.. I'm sure that like most of us, when he will jump in the car and try for himself he will soon find out it's easy like learning walk :)

Be very patient. Very very patient.

Once you've actually tried it, memorize the sensations through your hands and feet, and practice whenever you're sitting around watching TV or something. The more you practice, the better you'll get ... and after a couple of thousand miles driving manual, you'll be able to perfect the hard stuff, like perfectly blipping the throttle on downshifts, even while braking.

For now though, take it slow, try not to stall, and watch how others do it. Smooth = good.
