I concur.

Svensson 05-01-2010 05:27 PM

You guys can keep your Italia's, I'll gladly take the RS.

RC45 05-01-2010 07:21 PM

Sorry to say but the 458 does nothing for me. It looks ghastly, sounds anemic and overall seems to be all poser. Sure it is fast and capable as Harris points out, but if I am going to mortgage the house on a car, it better do something for me.

The Ferrai is bit like a Glock - all plasticky and utility, the Porsche like an a Kimber 1911 45ACP, the greatest of all classics redone to perfection.

Now, if I was a squillionaire, I would just buy both and be done with it :P

I agree, I would like to shift it myself thank you very much

enzoferrari 05-02-2010 06:54 AM

I just saw my first 458 today, I sat in it, I have no words to describe how amazing this car is, it looks 10 times better in person, the RS is just that another nice Porsche that looks good like every other Porsche, I love Porsches don't get me wrong but Ferrari is just ahead, I prefer a manual transmission as well but when driving a Ferrari you cant ask for a better one because that's the best there is , I just love the 458.

Even more like a confused 4-cylinder with a bad intake hose than it does now.

I honestly cant see ho wyou guys get past how shitty Ferrari V8's sound - they really sound like shitty 4 cylinders, which incidently is NOT a good thing ;)

Madness sir...pure madness. They may not be the best sounding cars out there, but in no way do they sound like 4 Bangers.

I still don't like the front or rear styling of the 458, but I can get over it.

i drove a 430 at the thruxton circuit in england like 4 years ago at a driver's experience thing, and it's got one of the best intake noises out there (would've enjoyed it more if the instructor wasn't that nervous)

but i know exactly what u mean with the 4 cylinder esque sound from factory exhausts, the 430, 360 CS, even the italia are like this...that's why i'm crazy about the kreissieg sounds (though the 360 sounds good enough stock IMO) no 4 cylinder engine sounds like this ..

It's the flat-plane crank I believe - makes all F-car V-8's sound like a pair of 4 cylinder Fiats with out a decent muffler :twisted::laugh:

I agree, those V8 Ferrari's sound a lot like inline 4's... and even worse, the sound is getting less and less exciting every time a newer model comes out. The F355 was the last great sounding Ferrari V8 IMO. I've heard a lot of 360's/430's in real life and even the Challenge racing cars lack that special sound that Ferrari's are supposed to have. I admit, those Kreissieg systems make the sound a lot better, but it's a shame that Ferrari themselves can't seem to get it right without making their cars sound synthetic or just plain loud as hell without any character.

The GT3 models on the other hand, have that special spine-tingling howl that I like sports cars of this caliber to have. That, together with a perfect manual gearbox, better steering feedback and a more lively balance, makes the choice between the RS and the 458 quite easy for me.

The new RUF RGT-8 is using a flat plane crank too, let's see if they screw it up like Ferrari did

You're right, it is due to the flat plane crank. If anyone can recall the Lotus Esprit V8; it suffered the same plight, only it sounded even worse .

Go to 2:55 of this vid for confirmation:
vs.:
I actually saw one with this same colour scheme today :-D.

...and then, there is this sound:

I believe Ruf did this so their V8 would not sound like an American V8 bit rather like an angry flat-6... I really hope they are able to pull it off

enzoferrari 05-06-2010 12:38 AM

Ferrari sounds like 4 cylinders ?? WTF? I don't think so, The 430 sounds so good, best sounding V8 IMO.......Ferrari sounds like 4 hahaha

Not having grown up around european 4 cylinders, you dont know what they sound like - because if you did, you would instantly recognize the crappy sound of a 4 cyl fiat or lancia or alfa or VW even... and the F-Car V8's are really firing like twin 4 cylinders the way the crank is laid out ;)

YOU seem to think that V8's should sound like Ferrari V8's - that doens't mean they dont sound like 4's

enzoferrari 05-06-2010 10:18 AM

You don't have to grow up around crappy 4cyls to know how they sound like, there are crappy 4 cyls everywhere specially nowadays and I know they sound horrible, but I cant agree with you, because there is a big difference.

There is no difference between a crappy "tuned" fiat 4cyl and a crappy sounding anemic F-Car V8 - they sound the same.

Really they do, just ask people who have heard both ;)

enzoferrari 05-06-2010 10:26 PM

Well, Ill buy any 4cylr car that sounds like an F430 any day Ill pay cash.

Still doesnt mean the F430 sounds nice, it is a grating anemic crass noise.

tforth 05-07-2010 12:00 AM

Which version of Ferrari's V8 do you think sounds better:

with conventional 90° throw crank

or

with 180° 'flat plane' crank

Below is a sample of the last of the great sounding Ferraris (F50 with tubi exhaust - F355 isn't bad either ;-)):

tforth 05-07-2010 12:21 AM

Whoops , the video descriptions should be the other way aorund, of course (i.e. the 360 uses the flat plane crank...).

RC45 05-07-2010 02:47 AM

The 8C is fantastic sounding.. not so much the 360 ;)

speaking of V8s that sound like 4 cylinder engines, have u guys heard the X6/X5 M cars?...

apparently they don't use flat cranks like ferraris...at first i thought it had to do with placing the turbos and exhaust manifolds between the cylinder banks, but then i listened to the xdrive50i (which has the same layout) and it sounds just like a normal V8 (muscle car sounding) , but why the 4 cylinder sound for the M cars?

RC45 05-07-2010 08:03 PM

What is the exhaust/muffler layout? They could have a cross pipe that is sized/position to have a cancelling effect on the opposite exhaust pulse.

Yes, I agree that the Maser/Alfa 90° crank versions of the Ferrari V8 sound way better as well. Although tubi equipped 180° Ferrari V8s would do 'in a pinch' ;-).
