Skyline GTR NS Lap - Fast lap - 7:38.54... but...

Notice at between 1:00 and 1:08 where the lap begins being timed... and where the lap stop's being timed. This is the 26,600 m NS lap time, and is not used by the major manufacturers when claiming a lap time.... not GM, BMW, Audi, Porsche, and supposedly not Sport Auto either.

The distance which is the true lap is 26,823 Meters, about 4-6 seconds longer then what is measured.

The lap is totally BALLS OUT.... but the timing is uncomparable to the 911 Turbo's 7:40, the C6 Z06's 7:43, the GT2's 7:32, etc. etc.

gangajas 10-24-2007 12:42 PM

I've read in other forums that this lap is similar to the laps that SA do in its Super Tests. So this lap is comparable to the 7:49 of the Z06, for instance. The thing is that maybe that unit doesn't have 480 hp, because with two turbos Nissan can easily change the power output. And does that unit have the same set-up that production units will have? We don't know.

P.S.: A higher resolution version will be available for downloading :D

with a top speed of 167 mph on dottinger hoe? [so i've read] I don't think its more then the claimed 480 hp. Throttle response seems very good in this car... and the car has very very high cornering speeds.. i love watching this guy balancing this car out... even if so much of it is electronic dif, and brakes control

pagani 10-24-2007 02:09 PM

This will be one heck of a car.
Faster than allot of fast cars
But slower than 997 gt2 or that kind of car.
I really want to kown wathe the tuners have in mind of this
And just think wath mines could do with this car.

its about the same speed as a C6 Z06 around NS, but with softer tires, so its got higher cornering speeds... def. not R compound tho

The gtr is very impressive if you think about the weight of it.
Regardless what tires it used on the lap[ this is one quick car.

Nth, are you sure about that? Some of the comments (which I didn't read all of it) stated that is the pit lane run off area and that is actually the correct timing method used.

it is one of the timing methods used, but I have on good word that it is not what the manufacturer's use when timing. Hence known timing using a 26,823m distance ;)

I've seen a max. sped of 280 km/h. Max. speeds of other cars:

282 km/h - Porsche 997 Turbo (another bi-turbo car probably with more power that stated by the mfr)
281 km/h – Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM
281 km/h – Pagani Zonda F
280 km/h – Pagani Zonda C12S 7.3
280 km/h – Porsche 996 GT3RS
279 km/h – Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG *
279 km/h - Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera
273 km/h – Ferrari F430

271 km/h – Porsche 996 Turbo
271 km/h - Porsche 997 GT3RS
271 km/h – Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale
270 km/h - Chevrolet Corvette C6 Z06

Why the hell do they stop the clock something like 40 metres before the place where they started?! :hmm:

Anyway, it's a very good onboard lap... and one hell of a laptime - but remember that this is just the beggining. Can't imagine how fast the more focussed versions like the Nismo Z-Tune will go at the NS  :P

I think this will be the benchmark for sportcars for the coming years.
And i wonder how the old rival the mitsubishi evo will be against the new gtr.

not 40 meters, 223 meters.

tforth 10-24-2007 10:03 PM

Definitely a fast time, but if their benchmark was the 997 turbo, which had been seen many times lapping with it, what did you expect? Was it supposed to be much slower?

No one has commented on the sound that this thing makes. Yeah, I know turbos aren't the best for this in general, but this thing sounds outright boring; especially with the way that the DSG like trans shifts gears. It sounds like a car in a crappy video game or something.

PaulGT2164 10-24-2007 10:19 PM

well it sounds bad on a youtube video of a incar camera, with prolly sub-par audio. I bet the car will sound great, nissan has been pretty good about that lately, (the 350z and G35/37 sounds awesome stock)

by the niose the turbos are making and the exhaust note in the car i think it will be more than acceptable sound wise.

can't tell shit from that 2pixel vid...where's the actual video of the run

i was thinking about the time. maybe like a F1 race they start at Pit exit, but the lap ends at Pits entrance.

that is how it is run on public days, but when setting production car records, it includes that final straight with the start-finish line.

Are you saying they start and end on the front straight for official lap times?

official lap times are timed near the end of the pit straight. The beginning is timed correctly, the finish is timed incorrectly. Check the youtube video and you'll see what I mean.

the lap start is at about 1:08 into it.

gobs3z 10-25-2007 12:42 PM

Here is my only discrepancy, if Sport Auto do their lap times like they did with this Pagani F and the time starts and ends where the camera is then that time is much faster than it should be since they had a running start on the long straight compared to this low mph turn with the GT-R. I'm just trying to figure this out.

Zonda F lap video

fordgt84 10-25-2007 01:34 PM

that's a legend in the making i'm sure... very impressive driving, car looks stable, and doesn't sound too bad :D

i wonder if it will be as easily tuned as the previous skyline gtrs with their rb straight sixes...i hope so

that isn't where the timing for a lap takes place... but, the car does do a 7:32... just some clever editing on where to put it... at v-max

The time is under discussion and dispute - the "test car" used hand-cut slick tyres and it is most likely that the lap was done by the $95,000 EVO version of this car.

I've read the GTR with 470 hp or whatever will be stateside next June at a price around 70-80 thousand.

but even the developer of the car states:

Quote:

We only got three full laps and no one was timing us, so you’ll just have to assume we set the lap record. Earlier, Mizuno-san had offered some lap times from the Nordschliefe for various cars driven by the German magazine SportAuto. Those times are driver-dependent, track-knowledge-dependent, weather-, traffic- and bunny-crossing-the-track dependent. But Mizuno suggested the GT-R could get anywhere from 7:44 on up, with most laps coming in between 7:55 and 7:58. So he suggested the GT-R’s strong suit was that it offered “the best cost per lap time.” For whatever that’s worth.

As I mentioned... The German Rags believed it hook line and sinker like everybody else... just to find out it was a mid 8 minute car.

The Jaguar XJ220 was a 7:42 production car ;)

I kind of figured they might have used non-production tires but had no way of knowing. Now we know better. tisk tisk Nissan. It's still a fast car, but Motor Hype . . . or rather Motor Trend will have to say something about their not-so-true headline from the December '07 issue.

But seriously though, I think $69k for a sub 8min production car isn't bad. Not a super deal, but definitely not bad either.

But I think I would lean towards the Corvette Z06 for that price though.

Magazine lead time is like 4 months.... news bits a fair bit quicker. I hope you are right.

79TA 11-16-2007 05:43 AM

^^^ yea, I read a lot of car magazines but it's really more to review and enjoy car-related stuff. Jalopnik, Leftlane, and other such blogs are most of what keep me up to date. Inside information never hurts either. Saleen just revealed their new '08 models (with the 302 stroker engines) at a press day at the former El Toro Air Base just the other day. I expect to see that in "February"(?) issues of some of the car magazines.

Car and Driver was much more sensible when approaching the GTR than Motor Trend.

79TA 11-17-2007 05:01 AM

just got back from the LA Auto Show and the GTR hype has really gotten out of hand.

First, some guy was claiming it did 0-60 in 3.4 . . . Nissan claims 3.5. This would be insignificant but it's scary how quickly the fanboys' rose colored glasses go on.

Later, another guy acted as if I were the anti-christ when I mentioned that the GTR's impressive ring time was due in part to using cut slick tires . . . he would not believe a word of it.

I observed other small cases of misinformation that were quite frustrating to hear.

My feelings on this car have gone from
meh

to oooh interesting indeed

to, something's fishy

to ah, the tires, figures

and now to contempt. People stand around and bash the Mustang's live rear axle and Corvette's leaf springs contrasting it to the "miracle working" GTR suspension, never once stopping to consider that suspension geometry alone cannot make up for 3800 pounds of car with less horse power and torque outrunning a Z06 on the ring. AWD helps for sure, but . . . yea you all know, tires. Blah, I don't like to think I'm oh-so informed on cars, but the average person's misconceptions bother me to no end.

The only thing worse is the really old fanboys who are like 50 or 60 and they go on and on about how Nissan and Hondas are the greatest thing that happened to them. And when you say otherwise, they bring up the years of "experience" and "knowledge" they have over you and just completely ignore what you have to say. Although they are very happy to try to convert you.

...yes those people do exist. And I met one at the LA Auto Show myself.

And I shut them up when I said the GT-R was ugly. :-P:mrgreen:

StanAE86 11-24-2007 04:25 AM

I did't believe the GTR times . . . period. With all the electronics and all, it doesn't make up for the weight of the car and the fact that it's damn near 4,000lbs. Cut tires make sense, which doesn't really help place the car into comparison with any other manufactured car that ran in "sale" spec with regular street tires. If the GTR is going to be released with cut tires, then fine. But I HIGHLY doubt it.

I heard that the Japanese manufacturers were caught by Best MOTORing back in the days when the show first came out. Back then, the manufacturers would "loan" cars to the show for testing. Then the show started seeing "weird" stuff and in one episode, the compared the "loaner" car from the manufacturer with one they bought off a lot. The loaner car was lowered, had different tires, etc. to make it perform better on the show. Now, Best MOTORing buy all their test cars and sell them afterwards with a plate that says it was used on the show...I guess people will pay a little extra for it.

I don't mind seeing comparisons, but compare apples to apples and don't say your car is just as fast or faster than X, if it's tricked. It's like saying your Honda CRX is faster in a 1/4 mile drag than a Viper, when the Viper is stock, but your CRX is pumping 23psi via the turbocharger, has huge Hoosier drag slicks, is a tube-framed car with a fiberglass shell, and is running alcohol and NOS too. I'm not trying to hate, but if you're going to release quotes and numbers...be upfront.

The lap is totally BALLS OUT.... but the timing is uncomparable to the 911 Turbo's 7:40, the C6 Z06's 7:43, the GT2's 7:32, etc. etc.

Long time guys!

I have been doing "research" :), and like someone said earlier...sport auto doesnt not make the full 20.8 km run due to safety precaustions. The GTR ran the same distance as all the other cars.

Plus there is NO clarrification on the tires yet. I have seen other articles that state it was a language miscommunication and that the the engineer said "it could have done low 7:30's, but would have required "cut-slicks".....either way its still fast.

Also Nth.....there is no conclusive evidence on the 997 Turbo's 7:40 lap (the only thing i have found is a Motor trend estimate). No one knows what it was run on. The only thing that we know is sport auto ran a 7:54 in the Turbo on MPSC's.......there is also another times showing Walter running a 7:49 on MPSC's. .......MPSC's are not an option on the 997 Turbo :)

So, we will have to wait for sport auto to get a real test number.

Top Gear also has the GTR against the Scuderia in the Jan issue !

Long time guys!

I have been doing "research" :), and like someone said earlier...sport auto doesnt not make the full 20.8 km run due to safety precaustions. The GTR ran the same distance as all the other cars.

Sport Auto did the test of the new GTR on NS; and it was posted in the magazine scan section, and it ran a 7:50 around NS, which is what other quotes from Nissan engineers have said they expected it to do. In the video, you can clearly see an odd tread pattern that was in the tire used. Furthermore, they called the track wet. In the video, its easy to see that the only thing that could've been wet was the condensate on the grass beside the track.

Nissan have always been full of it when it comes to NS and the GTR's track time... remember they claimed the R34 could lap in 7:59... SA got it, and could only manage a mid 8 Minute lap at best. ;)

As to the Porkers not being as fast.... The Germans have a reputation to keep ;)

That just sounds like an unfair fight.

Anyways. Is it true that the GT-R automatically limits its own speed in Japan by recognizing what road it's on? Maybe we can twinker with the systems and limit all of their cars to 30mph.

The article in sport auto was not a full review, nor was it the "supertest". It was a pre-review. Nissan simply let them drive the car, and in the time they had it, it managed around a 7:50 (it was also pre-production).....so really we cant go by that article as a set time.

And anyway, If it does do 7:50, that is still good for sport auto. The fastest sport auto achieved on the 997 Turbo was a 7:54 on MPSC's and there is a logged run of Walter running 7:49 on MPSC's.....so 7:50 would be right there with the Turbo.

We will see in due time.

P.S. I'm sad - what happen to the site guys???......I know I've missed alot of info here recently...the old site was so easy on the eyes.

He's not the only one. I only had to say that the GT-R was ugly to shut a heated argument about it down at the Nissan stand at the LA Show.

And don't get your panties in a bunch. It's okay to admit that there are people in the world who think that the GT-R is ugly. ('Cause it is :-P) Or the fact that the one can't help but feel that everything about this overpriced Nissan is unnecessarily hyped.

I may never have liked any GTR, but this one is a stylistic nightmare. At least the old one looked alright. Japan is out of ideas, and are quickly heading toward Korean design emphasis :(

Subaru was the last good looking Japanese cars until the MY 08 cars :(

rave426 11-29-2007 03:37 PM

^^ Yeah really - the new Impreza looks like a lump of peanut butter (crunchy :) )

And the new Hyundai Genesis looks like the whore mothered love child of all the luxury brands in the world.
