What should my 1st car be?
 

Ok, I am getting my liscense very soon, and I need a car for next semester. Heres my criteria, please give suggestions:

1. It MUST be Rear-Wheel-Drive
2. It MUST be under $5000 Canadian
3. It should be fairly easy to find one in Canada
4. Preferably a car thats fairly easy on insurrance
5. Preferably a car that can be modded (engine mods) cheaply and easily

Thanx, please give me some input!

you can get a nice 5.0 for around 5000
or you could always try to get an old cop car those are usually pretty good :wink:

I will deffinitely get a 5.0L stang if I can afford the insurrance, but I am positive it will be about $10,000 a year if its under my name, so I have to find out how much it will be if its under my parents names and im an occasional driver on it. Thats why im trying to find more options. Caprices and crown vics arent bad, but they're kinda big. What about BMW 318s, and 325s? around 1990... I saw some of those for under 5k, any good? or dont go for them?

i would go for a bmw used, 320 would be ok, those shits pull fucking crazy dude, get the bmw

I would suggest an early year mitsubishi 3000gt, but that is just me. Maybe not the best bang for the buck, but I am totally in love with that car.

3000GTs are far out of my price range. im looking for cheaper stuff. on Auto-trader, theres a 64 caddilac for $2000. That thing is so HUGE, i should buy it just so I can own the road. lol

Contour SVT, i had one, very good car

I had an SVT Contour also, but he'll never find one in his price range. Hey, get a V6 f-body (firebird or Camaro) The last generations of those cars you can pick up pretty cheap. The insurance compane doesn't donsider them to be sports cars since they're only a V6, but they can be moded as far as you want. These make for great 1st cars.

Hey hemi, you should call up a small ensurance agency and ask for the price of ensuring certain cars. The small companies usually have no work, so they will be as kind as possible! I will do this soon too. I have adquired my targets (car and ensurance company).

If you want a cheap car with lots of available after market parts, that's cheap to insure, and are able to suck up your pride a little: a neon is the best choice. Dirt cheap with the ability to provide some decent power, and no one would suspect (including the insurance company) how much of a punch it could pack. It's not pretty or sexy but with modification it can move.

I saw an Audi with Quatro AWD for under 5k, not sure what model, im gunna go check now. ALso there was a Caprice Limo that was $4k, I was joking around with my friends saying I was gunna buy that. lol

If it's your very first car then I'd suggest going for the cheapest, oldest hunk of junk you can find. A fast/powerful car at such an early stage in your driving career is not a good thing, imo.

5.0L Stang - good mussel car, what will it be like in 5 years time
Supra - fast reliable, a bit rice?
RX7 - perefct but a mazda
240SX - quick and well built
MR2 - dont bother it is gut less with a wrong gear box
Camaro - dont know mucha bout em
Trans-Am likewise
BMW 318/320/325 - quality need i say more if so calss
Porsche 924/944 - go the porsche only you need to keep it dam cleen and new looking for it to be a porsche

Yeh, i wouldnt get a V6 stang or maro. It just ruins the entire car IMO. it wasnt really meant to have that engine. If I got a mustang, it would deffinitely be a 5.0. I dont even think i'd get a camaro with a 305 in it... The Problem with the Porsches and BMWs is believe it or not, their insurrance is even more expensive than the mustang's. Thats deffinitely out of affordable range.

Actually the first Mustangs only had V6s and the Camaro has a 351 not 305. And the old 5.0 is actually worse than the 4.6 a new 5.0 crate engine is very good though.

I wonder if you could get an old M3 for that much? If you could, that would be a blast and that should definitely be your choice. But I don't know what an old M3 would cost.

they're dirt cheap because they're not good cars. every single person i've talked to says Neons are very unreliable cars. and apparenlty the way Dodge (or chrysler if you're weird) mounted the engine makes it tough to work on too.

also, his "requirements" list menitoned that the car must be RWD. Neons are Front drive.

but i have driven in one, and despite the feeling of a slightly jittery chassis, it was kinda fun for the test drive. just wish it had been a manual...

Why would you choose the miata over the others? It was probably at the bottom of my list... And as for the V6 stangs/maros go, in the year-range im looking for, the stangs dont even have a V6 option, only 4cyl. and from what I hear the 4cyl is AMSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. its unreliable, no power, bad mileage... nothing going for it. The maros have V6s from that generation, but I still dont really like them. I made a chart of insurrance quotes I got off a web-site. Im pretty sure they arent accurate, but it sorta shows which cars are more expensive or not. I'll post it soon.

zevolv, what do you think about T-birds? I like the 87-88 bosy styles the best, but the ones after that were alright. Which do you think is better? the SC or the 5.0L birds? I dont know much about them.

Man, ur insurance companies r sooo easy on u guys! Its bin costing my mate over £1500 to insure himself fully comp on a 1.6 8 valve 90bhp citroen saxo 4 the last 2 years. since he was 17

Damn you lot have it easy!

Get the RX-7 man!! Goes well, handles great and looks good! Many mods available to increase performance, and these can easily outrun most stuff on the road!

But.... they drink fuel, and require constant maintenance..... maybe good in a sense cos you pay attention to the engine and learn from it.

I think it is important to get a good handling car, with that then you can learn a lot more from it, rather than constantly fighting against the car round turns.

I don't think he could get a Renault in Canada very easily. Nor the US come to think of it. Yeah If I were you I'd get the cheapest, best gas mileage, durable car on your list. Do some reasearch too see which are the most reliable. You don't need a fast car really. Save the money for a real man's sports car.

BMW E30 ...really cheap and it wont hurt u as much if u crash it ,

a porsche 944 s2 turbo...but look out for exhaust and suspension wear and tear..very imminent after about 60,000 miles.

get a honda prelude vtec 92-26. NA so it will be reasonable with insurance. Still 200hp, but front wheel drive, which is probably safer for an inexperienced driver. Don't be thinking you can just go drifting coz you see that crap on the internet.

No do not get a honda prelude, they are slow, and they are preffered by ricers. Dont get anything rice, youd be suprised by their insurance, because of idiots in our age bracket who just crash them. I say get the AUDI since you live in Canada and with the snow, the AWD will be fun during the winter.

Man, these are some very different oppinions. As for the drifting comment goes... well, I may not be able to drift now, but I sure as hell wont be able to learn how to do it properly in a FWD car. Plus theres not really any places I can drift around my neighbourhood except for in Costco parkinglots, so I probably wont be endangering anything there anyways. As for the AWD, I added it because right now its obviously the winter, and I think that car would be absolutely amazing, but what happens when you get to the summer? will the lack of power make it a boring car? Probably next week when I get my liscense i'll go down to some insurrance companies with my list and let them look it over. Im pretty sure the stangs all of the real "Performance Cars" like the stang, supra etc. will be closer to $9000, while the Caprices etc. will be in the lower $4000 range, but thats just my hunch. My current job at Mc'Ds will bring me approx. $8000-9000 per year, so if its $9000 for insurrance, then I can pay it... I just wont be able to drive the car EVER because of gas, repairs, etc. lol

Woah, 9 grand for insurance a year? Damn, mine is 1500 a year, which is expensive considering i drive a damn Honda Accord Sedan V6. O and the AWD will still be fun during the summer, because you will live for the twisties. But if you havent even gotten your license yet, i cant recommend a powerful car to you. I say get a Honda or something.
