2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8 MR

Finally found some time to start this topic, picked the car up my Jap-spec Evo 8 MR on Thursday night. Not officially sold here, the previous owner importing it from Japan himself and getting it complied.

I haven't given it a proper thrashing on backroads yet (Easter weekend means huge fines if caught) but its already evident how much of a step up over the WRX (even a modded one) this is.

A few points:

1. The Recaro seats are just sensational!! I'm in love!
2. Brembo brakes are huge and a big improvement over the Subi 4-pots.
3. Steering is very light and direct.
4. The 6-speed is stunning, very easy to use and has a great feel. The clutch takes some getting used too and heel-and-toeing isn't as easy as in the WRX.
5. HIDs are nice, work well.
6. Great acceleration for a stock car, I reckon it would be pretty even with my WRX given the ratios. Sounds slower though. :P Despite having a FMIC there is alot less lag (kicks in between 3000-3500), the twin-scroll TD05 turbo helping in this case.
7. Sensational handling, not too hard to get the tail a little light and pretty much no understeer.
8. Hard to see the front of the car since its so short and hard to see out the back with the big cf wing.
9. NEEDS LOWERING ASAP!!!! Too high.

That'll be the first thing I do next week, get some Whiteline Control lowering springs (35mm drop).

Then it'll be a Tomei and Trust exhaust and an ECU retune, which will really get the thing going - will already be quicker than the Rex by that stage.

So all in all I'm in love already and looking forward to the journey of modifying this thing into a beast. :D

Some quick pics, will take more as I progress.

Very cool pickup - was it a straight-up trade?

You love the red cars huh 8) so do i

congrats - i envy u

MIHALS 04-08-2007 03:43 AM

so what happened to the Rex? do you have both - Mitsu and Scooby now?

god I envy you so much

congrats for this new machine in your garage!!!

dingo 04-08-2007 04:20 AM

blinkmeat and MIHALS - I still have the Scooby too for the moment. The WRX is for sale but until its sold I can choose which red beast to drive in the morning.

P.S. Evo is winning that decision so far, took the WRX to the shops just then which is the first time I've driven it since getting the Evo.

P_Zero_Rosso 04-08-2007 05:21 AM

Nice car man, the color suits it well.
Have fun with it!

TT 04-08-2007 05:53 AM

Nice car and nice pics already. As everybody else, I can't wait to see the evolution of this EVO ;)

Will you get rid of the writings on the boot?

dingo 04-08-2007 06:00 AM

Yeah I'll definately remove the "Lancer" badge and the Mitsubishi diamond, but will leave the "Evolution MR" bit so everyone can still tell its a limited-edition special. ;)

Erez 04-08-2007 07:20 AM

congrats dingo! 8) the MR is such a badass 8)

(..waiting new sig.. ;) )

gis 04-08-2007 07:55 AM

i wonder what word you can create with the word evolution to do with a body part, like the ANUS of the impreza? lol

very nice car it is,cant wait to see some more pics and maybe some vids?
congrats on the purchase, let the fun begin :D

Pokiou 04-08-2007 09:13 AM

Good work ma man ... looks awsome :D

Pok

mevistox5 04-08-2007 09:39 AM

Congrat's on the car. Sure you'll love it to death....

Why the ECU re-tune? Thought the MR already came with with a ralliart tuned ECU (power output 350'ish HP). Different downpipe and freeflow exhaust (3 inch) do wonders.

Look very well after your brakes. The disks on the EVO are prone to warping. (at least they were on my EVO VI).

sameerrao 04-08-2007 12:01 PM

The car looks nice Dingo. Congratulations!

TopGearNL 04-08-2007 12:43 PM

Very nice car Dingo, excellent choice! I envy you!

Love the pics! Are you going to make the rims black too on your new car?

And a comboshot with the scooby would be very cool 8)

redbaron 04-08-2007 01:25 PM

Very nice car.

I hope you will use a similar visual style as you have done with the Scooby. That would definitely improve the Evo.

T-Bird 04-08-2007 02:26 PM

Well personally I would get the EVO RS deck lid (no wing) and our MR (US) came with different wheels those are the standard evo wheels here and I thought all MR's had the diffuser on the roof?

saadie 04-08-2007 02:37 PM

^^ fins ;) ...

diffuser is something else ;) ....

gucom 04-08-2007 02:56 PM

congrats, looks good, sounds even better :D (performance & potential-wise 8) )

Schwalbe 04-08-2007 03:03 PM

Congrats Dingo for your new ride, I also always prefer the Evo over the WRX. Nice red color too. :good:

fancy non functional names ;) ...
those fins straighten the air flow to nearly equate the amount of downforce on both ends of the wings .. the car does not go fast enough to generate vortexex out of those little pieces anyway ;) ....

dingo . .you should really consider a big photoshoot of both the cars togather .. 8)

dingo 04-08-2007 09:20 PM

Yes I'm swaying towards black rims for this car too, not right yet though.

Once the Evo is lowered I will try and do a photoshoot with the 2 cars. :D

Any other probs? I live in Australia remember.

These rims will become track wheels with r-comps (semi slicks) on them in the future so doesn't bother me. They are 17" Enkeis and lightweight, perfect for track.

Vortex Generator was an option.

ae86_16v 04-08-2007 11:08 PM

Love the new pickup Dingo. I always liked the Evo and definitely respected its performance.

I like the new rear bumper on the new Evo IXs:

dingo 04-08-2007 11:25 PM

^ yeah I love the diffusers on the IXs! Might be an option down the track.

Couple of experimental pics from this morning:

Yeah thats about the only thing I'm missing so far, but don't worry the Evo can be made to sound pretty mean too. :)

Hehe, believe it or not those wheels are on my "list" - I have about 4 or 5 different sets that I'm considering at the moment. I've seen them on a mates Audi S3 and indeed are stunning!

P.S. I'm glad we didn' get the riced out altezza style rear lights like the US version in that pic!

A friend of mine has them on his Evo, the wheels look very good on a white car.

I agree on the tailights, I much prefer the normal ones. The clear tailights were an option, unfortunately, most Evo's I see have them.

tuffguy 04-09-2007 04:04 AM

Congrats man, it looks great! If you're gonna get an MBC you can disregard this. If you're gonna get it reflashed, you should remove the pill from the vacuum line to the boost solenoid. It makes a huge difference.

That said, you should really get an MBC. With my Dejon MBC, I'm boosting to ~22psi and tapering down to ~21psi. No more boost flux like I had with the stock solenoid. A test pipe is pretty cheap and will give you great gains.

TopGearNL 04-09-2007 06:39 AM

Love that seethrough pic Dingo! :D

SPEEDCORE 04-09-2007 12:21 PM

Ahh Dingo, how could you leave us for the darkside :(

Congrats on the new car anyway :fist:

TopGearNL 04-09-2007 02:09 PM

stmoritzer 04-10-2007 04:28 AM

gangajas 04-10-2007 06:31 AM

novass 04-10-2007 08:25 PM

Vortex Generator was an option.

Not problems just questions

See I just figured all the MR's were the same since our MR is Identical to the FQ as they call it in Europe so I just assumed. and here the vortex generators were standard so again I assumed.

If you remember I said the Evo is waay better than the STi IMO

I guess this was another one of those taken out of context issues common on the internet. I love the car.

dingo 04-11-2007 10:52 AM

Car has been lowered now, was riding way too high.

HID headlights also sorted out and IC Waterspray fixed.

Couple of pics, nothing special - mate took the moving shot, blurry as hell but I kinda like the look of it. :D
