Parents out there, never let kids have fast cars
Kids in fast cars always speed. Always. If they put rims on there, or exhaust, they really will. Even if you hate foreign cars, just buy the kiddies a 1994 Honda Civic with a I-4 and an automatic box.
Did you just fucking say that honda civic's use V-4s????????????? no one uses V-4s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

im going for a used(obviously) porsche 928 or 944(in case i dont have the money for a 928) BTW sum1 from my neighbourhood almost killed himself 2nd day he had his 1st car(some BMW), hes still in the hospital, bet his moms buying him a civic auto now :P |
I agree with that I was and still am a hot head behind the wheel but I never cut people off or anything like that and I've never gotten a ticket, did get pulled over once cause I was going to be late getting back from lunch my senior year and the cop let us go.
as far as i know there was one v-4 made and used it was made by chevy =) little pos..but they made it
Lol, sorry... I am kind of influenced by outside "sources".

NO one uses V-4's ?????? --- Supercars have V-8's, v-10's, v-12's, and v-16's A Honda Accord has a V6 and makes what 220-240hp. A Honda Civic ranges from about 110-160 hp depending on the model and the country your in. DO YOU THINK THEY USE A V6 TO MAKE 110 horses? NO, they use a V4! |

I've neever heard of a V4 to my knowledge it doesn't even exist they do have 4 cilinders engines
yes they are inline 4s and H-4s (boxer/opposed)
OK, explain an inline 4 to me then because I don't know that much about it.
I guess what I meant was 4 cylinders. So whats the difference between a V and Inline?
an inline 4 is used instead of a V-4 to eleminate the mechanical loss of a V configuration although the inline configuration is longer it has less mechanical loss between the cylinder and the crank. inline 4s are used in any car that has a 4 cylinder except porsches and subarus (boxers). an inline engine has the cylinders in line its that simple instead of in a V setup. inline 4 (0000) V looks like a v from the front view and two rows from the top
Do you get it now? |
Ya Thanks- Where did you learn about engines?
The Civic has an INLINE 4 cylinder engine. And, yes, V4 engines exist. It's just that they're used in racing motorcycles. I've never seen or heard of a V4 in a car.
I learned about them through reading magazines taking engine specialist classes and working on cars with my dad since I was like ten. and racing bikes would never use a V engine it would weigh too much they just use really large V-twins. The only bike with a 4 cylinder engine is a honda which uses the Civic engine.
Thanks BADMIHAI -- about 15 minutes ago i thought that V4 just meant 4 cylinders. I thought all engines used the V positioning. Thanks for the INLINE insight!

He said they were also used in bikes, but I hit Post before you told me they weren't used in bikes.
What I wrote after thanks was just explaining my stupidity or lack of engine knowlegde and how i had been set straight. EDIT I should have checked out Howstuffworks.com http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/engine-inline-4.gif |
only in experimental use and the rotation of the V setup would cause the bike to be unstable at really high speed cornering
Can you explain the boxter engine to me ---I assume that the Porsche is called the boxter because of its engine setup. Am I correct?
Yes that is one of the reasons I'm sure there are other reasons and it's really spelled boxer no st (for future reference) the boxer engine is used in the 911s and in the boxster, it is also used in all subaru engines. the setup is basically the cylinders are placed directly across from eachother with the crankshaft in the center of the engine rather than in the bottom. there is no mechanical loss of power when transfered to the crank, power is lost through the accesories and the drivetrain. the boxer engine is also very short, it isn't a tall engine and that is one of the reasons that it can fit in the back of a porsche, if you've ever looked there really isn't that much room. you can also place the engine lower in the chassis to allow for a lower center of gravity. The boxers are also a little notorious for having rough idle but not on a newer car it's usually an older engine. If you ever look on the back of some subarus you will see a symbol that looks like H4 or H6 that is because in the boxer 4 from the top looks just like an H and the six is like an extra line on an H-l. BTW the official name for a boxer engine is an opposed engine if any other questions feel free to ask.
COOL, Thanks -- I guess I'll learn more in a few months ---- my neighbor is living in Switzerland for a year and he bought a 911 recently. He is moving back to Canada in few months and bringing it back with him.

How would you define a fast car though?
Personaly when I get my first car I'm going to get somthing where I wont kill myself in. I hate people going around in jappenese car with fart pipes. I'm grabing myself a non-///M BMW with 6 cylinders at the most. E46 323i sounds right to me in a few years down the track:) and it has 6 airbags 8) |
When i remember times which followed obtaining my licence i remember i use to drive much faster than now and i was less experimented to the traps of the everyday driving so i think it was better for me not having a fast car.
they use v-4s in racing motor cycles? do u have a link to a motor cycle v-4 i have never seen one..least not that i know although if it was a v-4 i could have assumed it was just a 2cyl
my dads s200 has a inline v4 and it can do zero to 100 in around 5 seconds 4 if you use the vetec to your advantage
Your dads S2000 does not have an inline V4 it has just an inline 4 not V4 don't you people ever read the whole thread before posting something! and by the way is that 100km/h or 100mph, if its mph your full of shit unless the thing is modded up the ass.

EDIT: the search I did on Google gave me nothing for racing bikes with V engines other than a V-twin. |
tell me an adult who buys a fast car won't speed, with an honest opinion...

The S2000 has a 2-litre 240hp engine, which means 120hp/litre. That's a world record for a production car with a N/A engine. Honda knows how to make good N/A engines. I'll give them that. |

Saabs used to use V4's way back in the day, and I know a few prototypes have had them too. Weird 2-strokes and stuff. They're a strange configuration that's mostly just useful because of size... so you get an engine about as big as a large Christmas turkey. The Saab Sonnet had it mounted longtiudinally with a regular transaxle, so it was like a backwards Porsche 911 -- the engine was in front of the front wheels, with front-wheel drive. Makes for shitty handling though.
I love driving a fast car, but not because I can say "look, I'm going over double the speed limit!" I like it because it *feels* fast. I used to have a Volvo 740 turbo, which wasn't a Lamborghini or anything, but it was still enough to spin both back tires for 50 feet, and top out at very very illegal speeds. I sold it and got a slower car that *feels* faster, and I have more fun. Even if I don't quite sink into the seat anymore. |
ok saab used one 20 years ago but no else did and no one probably ever will
I have just become dumber for reading this entire post.
There is so much mis-information it is beyond funny - and borders on imbecilic. V4's have existed for ever - and Ford produced hundreds of thousands of V4 engines - Honda has and still is producing V4 motorcycles by the tens of thousands - and so has Yamaha. Honda are currently using a V5 in MotoGP... I will be back later to continue schooling all y'all... p.s. Google is your friend kids.... |
I don't pay much attention to bikes since I will never own one. ford used the V-4 for a single year and it turned out to be a bad idea that was in 1965. I was talking abou cars. not bikes. show me a car that is available at a new car dealer in the past ten years with a V4.
technically Subaru produces 180 degree V4's...
no it's called an Opposed engine a V is not 180 degrees unless you failed geometry
read my post on boxer engines there are mathematical equations stating the difference between the boxer and the V and I'm not going to take the time to type them out long hand since I don't have the symbols on my keyboard to do it simply. sin and cos have a lot to do with it.

Anyone else who followed this thread over the previous 3 pages has seen enough to know it is a case of the blind leading the blind. BTW, Ford was selling V4's way into the 1970's - and the engines were used in the Cortina, Granada, Consul, Capri and a number of other cars. |
at 180 degrees the V is no longer a V so it can't be a V with a 180 degree angle

If you didn't have one - you didn't win. Statements like the one you made above (with supposed proof) are very misleading to those that hope to learn something... please think before you post something you don't know about - or at best research first. I guess you are going to argue that their never existed engines with oval pistons - or V5's or even V3's either. |

Searched the web for v4 motorcycle. Results 1 - 10 of about 26,400. Search took 0.16 seconds. |
all pistons are oval shaped (slightly)
and I really don't care that much about bikes OK they don't interest me that much I prefer to have a structure surrounding me. especially after seeing my cousins friend wipe out at ove 100mph

This website/forum has far too many members with both knowledge and interest in factual mechanlical information. I guess your dislike for bikes also prevents your using Google correctly. *pffft* - *whatever* |
