Porsche 993 GT1 - Studio Photo Shoot

If all goes well - expect a road and rack test from Zero to 100 later this year :)

This is 1 of 2 street legal 993 GT1's in existance (not an ex-race car but a purpose build street car).

Note the Texas smog inspection sticker - this car is ready for street duty :)

"The Gt1 racing rules required manufacture of at least one street-legal example of a model intended for racing. In 1996 Porsche built two road-licensed examples of its GT1 racer. Visually, their silhouette and details recalled the 992 model range. Their sheet-steel and carbon-fibre bodies included an intergral roll bar. The water cooled 3.2l twin-turbocharged six-cylinder boxer engine yielded 544bhp @ 7200rpm. The double-wishbone pushrod front and rear suspension represented pure-bred racing technology.

I've seen this car at the Houston GP ... lovely car!

RC45 01-20-2007 01:21 AM

Yep - it's been made smog legal since then and is ready for "daily driving" duties ;)

sameerrao 01-20-2007 01:24 AM

The daily driving better not be on Richmond or other downtown areas or the poor car will break up into bits on our crappy roads. :)

Do you have some data on car - I don't know much about the GT1 roadcar? It is based on the Le Mans winner correct?

See first post - I posted the true story behind the car. They built it so they could legally race the GT1.

carreragt10 01-20-2007 02:24 AM

NICE GT1

HarryCASI 01-20-2007 10:48 AM

993 GT1? i've never heard of it before... anyway, a lovely car and some nice pics!

gucom 01-20-2007 11:24 AM

yesssss i knew it from the first hints you gave... absolutely utterly stunning, this car has to be 1 of my favourites ever made... THANKS :D

harryo2b 01-20-2007 12:56 PM

Great shots RC!

Yes Sir, back when endurance racing was cool they had to produce sweet rides like this for the street just so they could lap such tracks as Le Mans in a race. Too bad we don't have top flight cars like this anymore being produced for the road since it would be rather hard to make a LMP1 car road legal/worthy ;)

The best GT1 in my opinion is the GT1 Strassenversion of 1998 which only 1 was built. The same year Porsche took 1st and 2nd overall at Le Mans before pulling the plug on all factory racing.

And the car is very well made for 1 of 2. It seems like a full series car the way it is finished. Better than mass produced kit cars.

WHo knows, that car might end up next to this one.. the first and last steert GT1's as stable mates :)

Mad beat! 993 GT1 pics are obviously rare!

I'd get rid of the decals if it was mine but well... :D

nah they're awesome, the porsche factory team always had great decals on the GT1's imo, and this streetcar brings the same feeling :) "the happy 90's" feeling which just belongs to these cars, especially the friendly-looking 993 model :)

Zot09 01-20-2007 05:38 PM

Oh...my...goodness. Nice shots RC, I love the GT1!

ViperASR 01-20-2007 05:45 PM

wow, awesome. Have fun driving that sucker on the street! I would probobly die if I saw someone driving that car on the street.

Do you know what he had to do to the car to make it street legal?

See - I don't think the Z06 is God at all.. -- the Gt1 is God, the Z06 is just one of the High Priests :P

And you just need some money, time, patience and the technical knowhow to get it smogged.

It appears to have the Champion Porsche color scheme on it. But this was a road car from the get-go?

Coolio!

Stan is right, Champion Motorsport livery/decals same look as on Champions Audi R8's. Porsche Motorsport is Blue/Red livery on white bodies.

I assure you this is the white 993 GT1 road car.. ;)

And as far as me driving that car, that's probably going to be a stretch of good luck to pull that off, but passanger rides are a sure thing ;)

Oh no doubt it's the '96 GT1 Strassenversion but I was just commenting on the fact it has racing livery added to it. For what reason...who knows, was it factory added or was it customer? Maybe you can find out for us RC? Original owner or dealership that sold the car?

RC45 01-21-2007 12:06 AM

It is in it's original white delivery livery - just with Champion Porsche graphics - I think the decals were put on for Rennsport Reunion one year.

novass 01-21-2007 05:59 AM

Thanks for the pics :D

Ultra rare 993 GT1? There were 2 of them built, what you potentially saw was the one and ONLY 1998 GT1 streetversion which would make it just a bit more rare.

As far as I know, there was one 996 GT1 Evo... with the aero package of the Le Mans racer. The one I saw was the 996 GT1, which was more or less a 993 GT1 with the 996 head lamps

Not that rare as far as I know... :D

You confused me a little, since all cars looked just like the Le Mans entrants. Never was a 996 GT1.

This is not what you saw I take it: http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z1797/default.aspx

I can see how and where the confusion comes in.

Porsche built 2 993 GT1 street cars, and 21 996 GT1 street cars.

These were made during 1997/98 model years. This is the text of one of the most "official" of the Porsche archivists, Marc Bongers,

Quote:

Porsche laid on a limited produciotn run of 21 road-legal examples of the 911 GT1, at a price of 1,550,000 DM. The road version was a direct offshoot of the victorious Le Mans racer. Visually, the GT1 carried the headlamps, tail lamps and door handles of the new 996 Carrera generation. the coupe body was a composite construction of sheetsteel and acrbon-fibre-reinforced-plastics. Compared to the 1996 version, the front wings had different wheel cut-outs. A roof-mounted scoop fed air to the engine. The tail was topped by a full-width rear wing and terminated in a Gurney lip.

The water-cooled twin-turbo engine was based on the crankcase of the 964. The four-valve power unit produced 544bhp from a displacement of 3164cc.
Now the GT1 produced in 1998 did have some visual cues that are slightly different - but what further research is showing there may have been a few other changes over the 21 cars - some subtle, some not so subtle.

The BB-GT 196, BB-GT 197 and BB-GT 198 license plates used on the presentation models over the 3 production years may be the most telling of which GT1 you are looking at - the on in this thread is the white car originally presented by Porsche bearing BB-GT 196.

Sorry man - I thought I posted up the 2 images I have already - but more will come.

See the first post to see 2 new interior shots.

Wutputt 01-21-2007 06:01 PM

Thanks for the 2 extra interior pics ;)
I wasn't expecting leather upholstery in this car. I would have expected a really minimalistic interior without any luxury. Interesting.

RC45 01-21-2007 06:37 PM

Yeah - that glove box really opens as well ;) - it houses some fuses and slays - but you could keep your "License and Insurance" in there.

Sitting in it all you can imagine is "Faaaaaaaaaaaaargggg - this thing must go like hell." ;)

A little bonus:

RC, you get any $ figures for value on this car? I remember a few years back it was said to be around $1,000,000 USD for a GT1.

That is easy:
Monday: Challenge Stradale
Tuesday: Challenge Stradale
Wednesday: Challenge Stradale
Thursday: Challenge Stradale
Friday: Challenge Stradale
Saturday: Challenge Stradale
Sunday: Challenge Stradale

To much CS? Ok then ... Maybe the blue RUF (RS GT?) on Friday and red GT2 on Wednesday. I am not man enough to try the 'Ellobird or the mega powerful RS200. Under 500hp is more like it for my talent level (or lack of it). :)

Perfect shot BTW - lowlight shots are a *****. YOu must have taken it with a tripod :)

The blue one is an RTurbo, the orange one an RGT-RS, the yellow a CTR2 Sport and the black one is a CTR AWD... out of shot is the RT12 and one of the CGTs... so you really could use a diff. RUF for every weekday, and the CGT for saturday and the GT1 for Sundays :P
