Has anyone viewed 1080p from the Xbox360?
 

I like ho weveryone ahs been sucked inot the hype that is XBox360 HD-DVD support.

There is no HDMI cable for the XBox360 that I can find... so the "upgrade" to allow 1080p support seems moot at best, down right dishonest marketing at worst.

It would seem that component inputs on the majority of TV's support 1080i max res.

So you buy the HD-DVD drive for your Xbox360 for $200, buy/rent a bunch of HD-DVD's that would in theory be 1080p movies, but only playable as 1080i on your big screen HDTV...

Not to mention the games will only be 1080i... ;)

So it looks as if Sony blew Micro$haft right out of the water with this Blu-Ray thing ;)

Oh - and GT4 at 1080i upscaled to display on 1080p looks pretty much the same as PGR3 at 1080i.. ;)

So it looks like Forza2 will not even be as good in the visual department as GTHD, a free demo :P

XBy360's feel free to chime in and stand up for the XBox ;)

Oh - and let me know where I can find a pirate HDMI accesorie cable :D

first off I want to get this cleared out. The max most if not all Xbox360 games support is 720p correct? This is without upscaling or any of that software crap.

Second does anyone know of any 360 games that will have native 1080p resolution rather than just upscaling it?

Third its kinda off topic but is Test Drive Unlimited coming to PS3? If so When? :P I have looked everywhere on the "tubes" and cant find no damn info about it :(

As a game machine, the PS3 is completely worthless at the moment IMO. But it seems it's blue ray player is doing pretty damn good. I just wonder if playing lots of movies will have an effect on the PS3. Playing DVD's killed my PS2.

I'd realy like to get an HDTV. But the more I read into it, the more confusing it gets. It's getting ridiculous. HDMI, DVI, HDCP, Blue ray versus HDDVD, component, "True HD" and a ton of other nonsense. LOL

I just want to get the value outof the XBox360 I bought.. I mean I have em both and enjoy em both. but like the PS3 more ;)

I agree that advertising 1080i as 1080p is misleading, but there HAS to be an HDMI cable available for the XB360...Right? Anyway I think your worries that you will be stuck viewing things "only" in 1080i is unjustified. 1080i looks amazing and in reality there is not an appreciable difference between 1080i and 1080p. Progressive sounds better in theory, but the tangible benefits are not huge.

Actually all the research I did has shown that Microsoft announced no HDMI cable for the XBox360 - because they say they don't think its needed.

As I understand it, an interlaced recorded source is reinterlaced to display on a progressive display. And as such I noticed that as an example, GT4 1080i when displayed on a native 1080i display seemed smoother and less prone to combing than when the 1080i source is displayed on a 1080p display.

So in short, if there exist no 1080p sources for XBox360 then I will always have combing when viewing the computer graphics at 1080p.

The main deal was to be able to enjoy Blu-Ray at 1080p which is flicker free and pristine ;) this we have accomplished... I understand if I had bought a 720p/1080i TV then it would make no difference as even 1080p source would be deinterlaced to display in an interlaced fashion on the 1080i display.

And to all the PGR3 FanBoys who claim it is awesome at 1080.. it only has 720 res graphics ;)

Yea, but you can't view 1080p at 24 frames per second with the PS3. It's best if you give me all your gear to avoid dissapointment.

You can get 1080p out of component in an LCD ...

I have to agree, the graphics on the 360 look beautiful on my HDTV, and that is all I really care about. That and there are a ton of good games, plus Halo 3. I'm not a sony hater, but I wonder about the reliability of the Blu-Ray players as they have never really been mainstreamed. I also worry because my friend has a PS3 and he says it gets hotter than my 360 does. Also, because Microsoft control the world, HD-DVD will win over Blu-Ray as I imagine more movies will be made in HD-DVD, its the same thing with the PSP movis, only certian ones will be made for it. Also, isnt the PS3 MP2 as the 360 is MP4 or something like that?

My XBox 360 received its 1080p software upgrade tonight.. but sadly HDTV component is limited to 1080i

So Microsft have dismissed every single HD TV owner out there with a HDMI.. not a wise move ;)

Althouhg, I probably could use the D-Plug "PC" input on the HDTV, as there is an XBox360 cable with D-Plug...

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and it may in fact be better, but the fact is that because Microsoft is such a big and powerful company with imputs at many other companies, I believe that HD-DVD will win.

every major electronics manufacturer is backing blu ray, as was microsoft until sony screwed them, and they had to switch...the majority of film studios is backing blu-ray...once ps3 releases some decent games then it'll be a total wash over...

I understand what you are sayng, and even see your arguments, and agree with it slightly. But it seems like the 360 is the more popular console, when it was released and even now. Plus, it had a year head start. Most stores I have gone to are sold out of Wii's but have more PS3s then anyone expected in the back of the store. A few weeks after the 360 was released you couldn't find a single one. It also dosnt help that it is a hella expesive console, twice the price of the core 360. Because of this, I think with Microsoft backing HD-DVD, it will become more mainstream than Blu-Ray. Or perhaps both will bomb because no one wants to spend that kind of money on a DVD player.

I do not believe that the PS3 success will determine who will be the winner in this. If you think about it, how many propietary plateforms on gaming was there before? Did it really matter?

Yes the PS1 was CD, PS2 was DVD, but in the end did it really matter to the winner of those plateforms? Well, I guess the CD and DVD didn't have much competition either. (Well Super Disc & Multimedia CD combined to make DVD.)

The PS3's success will depend on its games. Not that because it is a Blu-Ray player. And I have no doubt the PS3 will be successful, but does that mean HD-DVD won't be around?

In the end, it will all come down to price. How much the disc cost, how much does the movie cost, and how much do the players cost? Right now it looks about even with the exception that HD-DVD players are a bit cheaper.

Again, you pointed out that EVERY MAJOR manufacture is behind Blu-Ray and Blu-Ray has majority of Studio support, and I just wanted to point out that you were incorrect. In fact, by the looks of all numbers, HD-DVD hasn't quite rolled over yet.

All studios need to learn a lesson from Warner bros. hybrid discs that work in both players. Problem solved.

Yeah definitely. LG is going to introduce a Dual Format player at CES next week as well. Samsung also stated that if not clear cut winners will come out of this, they might introduce a Dual Format player as well.

Best I will get is 1080i, and the sharpest looking is 780p via the 1380 x 768 PC mode display on the Sony.

Thanks to RC, I've decided that I need to swing my dick and get an HDTV. :p Only problem is, space and money. I don't have as much to spend as you guys, so looks like I'll be swinging half a pack of rolaids.

Anyway, any help or recommendations would be appreciated.
I'd like it to fit on my current entertainment center, the shelf is 32" wide and just under 30" tall. I'd like it to fit in there. I don't want to buy all new furniture.
Being that I'd need a TV that small, would 1080p even be worth it? From what I understand, the smaller the TV is, the less likely you'll notice a difference between 1080p and 720p.
At some point, I'll be making the switch to Blue Ray or HD DVD, or both if the dual format players are worth it. If I went with a 720p TV instead of 1080p, will I be missing out, or will it still not matter because of the size?
Obviously, the Xbox 360 will be hooked up to it and at some point a PS3. So, the required inputs for those will be needed. Being able to hook my PC up to it would be a very nice feature, thought it isn't a neccessity.

Anyhow, I'm looking to spend about $1500 Max. Are there even any 1080p TV's available for that?

If anyone has a recommendation, I'm open to suggestions!

Well, $1500 on Tuesday at the local Circuit City would have bout you a 1080p 37" Plasma.

Remember, I bought mine for $1700 (regular price $3300).

Don't be afriad to shop around... TigerDirect.com also has some killer deals.

So if you stay around 32" you could get something of very high standard and quality for that price.

Generally speaking, no you will not see a noticable difference w/ 1080p @ 32". I am not sure there are many 1080p screens around that size. I think the smallest 1080p is a 37" Vizio right now. If I recalled correctly.

$1500 will get you something really nice. I am currently looking at the Sony Bravia XBR line, and that one definitely have one of the cleanest images around. Go to your local Circuit City or best buy and check out that display, usually they have a Blu-Ray demo disc playing and it is AMAZING.

HD DVD versus Blu Ray. HDMI, VGA, DVI, Component. 720p, 1080i, 1080p. Mind numbingly complicated HD packages from Comcast, Dish Network and all the rest. Over the Air HD. Xbox can't upscale without VGA, PS3 has it's problems. Recievers that can't pass HDMI signals. Firmware updates.

How is Joe Schmoe supposed to figure this out? Just plug in his PS3 and say it's HD?

RC, are you subscribed to any kind of HD television package, or are you just going for over the air HD programming? I looked at various pricelists and it's obscene. Comcast in particular. I hate those people more and more.

^ Yeah, Westinghouse and Vizio are some of the best budget manufacturers. My friend picked up a 42" Plamas from Costco for $1000. Definitely a good deal, but then again, it won't compared up to the Sony and Samsungs.

Well remember that 720p is 1280 x 720 pixels natively and 1080p is 1920 x 1080 pixels natively. But 1080i could be either 1280x720 or 1920x1080 Interlaced. Because you see TVs with 1080i specs but only have 720 vertical pixels.

I dont see why you would not go for 1080p at this time as the prices are tumbling.

A TV is a big deal and you will often look at it - and regret it everytime you think about the "other one" that only cost $97 more and had the gidazoo widget attachement.

I saw a Westinghouse 42inch plasma, 1080p,HDMI for ONLY 800 bucks. I think either tigerdirct or buy.com or something like that. Couldnt belive it.

Also HD programs is just amazing! Espically ESPN and Discovery! Just fucking insane man.

Thats the trouble I'm having. I haven't found a 1080p tv that will fit on my entertainment center. Smallest I'm seen, as you said is 37". I really don't want to buy a new A/V rack. Even though I wouldn't mind a smaller one.
