Does anyone know anything about these very rare JDM only MR2s?

There is one for sale in the UK and I am a little tempted by it...

Looks pretty neat, don't know about price listing of these cars but if it is a special edition and looking at its mileage and history, I think it is a bit of a buy! And Toyota's never let you down :mrgreen:

The last 1000 MR2s in Japan were fitted with this motor instead of the 170hp 2.0

So an extra 25-30hp and a bit of a VVT powerband after 5000 rpm

I'm also looking at a UK spec (170hp non VVT) 1999 MR2 as well, it has only 39,000 miles (55k kms) on it:

They're pretty nice cars, I was looking at them as a first car but I don't think Ill get one because of fuelcosts and insurance :(

BTW I nearly had a heartattack when I saw the prices for cars on pistonheads, not that they're expensive but so much more cheaper then in Holland. I know now for sure that I am going to move out of Holland, just too expensive :x

I am getting it as a second car, for weekend and maybe some track use.

Therefore, insurance and fuel isn't too much of a problem for me.

My budget is 5000. Just a bit shy of Mk3 MR2s with that budget though, unfortunately.

Also looking at MGF VVC (Variable Valve) and the MX5/Miata.



Anyone have any other suggestions for a RWD or Mid-Rear (preferably) car?

Something small and light. No TVRs - I wouldn't get anything worth having for only 5000.

Stretch your budget a bit and get a Mk.1 Lotus Elise :), or an Elan perhaps?

Or have extra fun and buy a Caterham style kitcar and built it yourself. Like a Dax or something...or look at Westfield

God damn a 1998 MR2 that's not in Japan.. Would be a great buy!

So this one has a VVTi Turbo engine? Don't know a lot about the last revisions of the MR2 for Japan but I've always had an eye out for a 1991 Turbo. It's really a shame they stopped sending the MR2 to the US after 1993.

^ no, its a VVTi NA engine. Same as the Altezza RS200.

I guess it is a bit like the Celica VVTLi (180hp) motor, but lower redline, wider powerband. Like a Prelude VTi rather than an Integra R.

I have to chuckle when I see folks talk about "fuel cost" and "insurance" in a 4 cylinder... ;)

Mr2's are pretty fun cars with good body styling I think. My mate just got rid of his and even though he sold it, he loved it to bits.

and yes the MR2 is a sports car, but its depends whos definition your listening to. Its definatly not a city runabout is it.

I drove an MR2 some years back - all it was crying out for was more power - but otherwise a great package.

If it's the JDM engine i'm thinking of, it should be 2.2L and it's the same one they used in some race Supras for weight management. It's a very strong block, but MR2's are a bitch to work on. Good luck..

TransAm, are you set on having an N/A MR2? I don't know what year they stopped bringing the Turbo MR2 into the U.K. (1995 in USA), but that would definitely be in your price range, and that turbo motor will easily make you some more power... :twisted:

Although both of those N/A versions are veery nice looking!

I never thought you was been serious, I know all too well you enjoy having a laugh and joke on here and half your posts are whitty but in good nature :).

My personal thoughts on the MR2 is, they have good looks and are very low and give you a nice sporty feel. The downside (and this is just a personal thing so it means nothing really) is when you are driving in one in a spirited way down a country lane, you always tend to remeber the bad things you hear about them been tail happy and spinning out on you. Makes you alittle nervous, but thats just me been a chicken I guess. My mate who owned it always complained about it feeling like you had lack of grip over the front wheels. But his was the 1991 model, and I think MR2's had there suspension revised in 1994 or something to avoid the oversteer and give more grip.

OH RC I forgot, I knew they was something to tell you. Theres a MR2 I pass every day, and the owner is abit crazy, hes tuned his engine to 530bhp and thats not including the nos he has, its a insane machine. Just abit ricey :lol: But if you want power you cant complain.
