My Maxtor Died.......Again!
If there is one peice of advice I can give anyone is dont get a maxtor.
I had my second one fry last night  A 120SATA. See them fry at work like nothing....these things are just utter shit. And Dells use them, so dont buy a dell. Or anything else that has one. |
i've had poor experience with Maxtor myself. i was using one for a secondary drive up until last school year when it started to crash.
i've never had a problem with my Western Digital 80gb w/8mb cache, but every couple days it'll make a worrying clicking sound. that's been happening a couple years, though, and i've had the drive since 2001. i think today i'll be picking up a Seagate 120gb drive at Best Buy, they're on sale for $50 after an instant rebate :) They seem to be quite reliable based on what i've read on other forums and on storagereview.com |
Ive had 2 200 gig maxtors for around 4 years. I think they are just fine.

Back in PC repair, and in the larger companies I've worked in, Maxtor's were on average the hdd's which died most often.
I personally won't be buying another Maxtor again... But your mileage may vary. Always have a second disk for backups. |

Well I picked up a 320gb Seagiate 7200.10 SATA2 for about 90$ US before shipping and tax.

try the old freezer trick, i hear it works
|
thamar....even samsung?...I am always skeptical on it...
|
Well what pissess me off is that I had an 80mm fan blowing right over the bastard and it still managed to fry....Twice....

Cause my backup WD is still going strong :P |
Having a fan on your HD just keeps the heat down.. doesnt neccessarily turn your shitty HD into a better one ;)
I've always known Maxtors to be problematic.. Didn't Seagate buy them out recently? It's a good thing hard drives are dirt cheap.. but everyone should know to buy atleast 2 at a time for a back up.. You really never know when it comes to hard disks.. |

fUCK! I tryed to get an RMA number only for maxtor to tell me I need to run some diagnostic utility.
Too bad I dont even own a floppy drive to run the diagnostic  Edit they got a CD iso...........bloody waist of a blank dvd..... Shit! It wont burn on a DVD and I dont have a CD-R.......SUCKS! EDIT-Sucks for maxtor that google gives me error code list. |

ahh the maxtor drive. I haven't bought one for like 7 years after having 3 or 4 of em die on me. I still have one running, but it makes an annoying whistling noise. I've stuck with Seagate ever since, because the only WD drives I want are the raptors. But they're a little expensive for me to justify a much lower loading time for games and applications I rarely use.

I like Seagate w/ their 5 Year warranty. I heard that Seagate bought out Maxtor, so hopefully they will improve their quality.
It happened to me once before and I will never buy Maxtor again. |
