He was getting some impressive speeds on the nurburgring.

What must the carrera gt guy think of an e30 that probably looked stocked being on his tale the whole time and managing to keep up :)

nickthaskater 08-15-2006 01:41 AM

Hell of an E30 right there...

spanky 08-15-2006 02:50 AM

Certainly did go well that BMW!

I suppose twin turbos helps a bit with HP as well

Minacious 08-15-2006 03:48 AM

That was a fun video.

A bit of a side-bar, I caught that exact CGT on the Nurburgring webcam a while back -

Note the plates  :)

Here's a version of the video I just finished ripping and uploading -
http://rapidshare.de/files/29473784/e30ttring.wmv.html

The drag racing has been cut out, I fixed the aspect ratio, and of couse, it's downloadable haha.

gangajas 08-15-2006 08:35 AM

Is that the evo's long term CGT?

dutchmasterflex 08-15-2006 09:03 AM

Now that's an E30 ;)

dannyroz 08-15-2006 10:28 AM

Sweet vid, I know the CGT wasnt pushing it (he did look like he was playing with the M3) but that kid in the E30 has skills.

Or maybe its just the car

StanAE86 08-15-2006 10:57 AM

Sweet video...thanks!

R8audi 08-15-2006 11:49 AM

OMG.... The bmw is awesome! Look how balanced in the corners. The guy has it setup perfect, no understeer at all. Wow!

Why do you say that :?:

I think the guy in the CGT was going as fast as he could!

Unfortunately, not everyone who can afford a supercar is a racing driver.

Still surprised no helmets at the ring :!:

pterps 08-15-2006 01:05 PM

One word: AMAZING

You could hear it in the exhaust note of the car

The only time he opened the taps was on the straight at the end and you could see the gap grow quickly.

There actually is music in the background, though it's pretty quiet :P

r2r 08-15-2006 05:57 PM

Its good that he kept it clean and pretty much stock looking from outside.

Nice find btw.

twboy1999 08-15-2006 11:18 PM

the cgt driver was defintily pushing it

just the e30 driver is a better driver

jorge 08-15-2006 11:35 PM

very good video, the part with the CGT is sweet

frodefe 08-16-2006 12:49 AM

I was driving around the track whole last week and noticed one thing.
The CGT driver knew the bends really good. The race line is perfect. But the BMW, due to both it's driver and it's setup, are able to follow, even if the line he use is not as effective..

Impressive....

nickthaskater 08-16-2006 12:53 AM

Yea I noticed the BMW was taking a less than ideal line as well, and he was still pounding around pretty bloody quick. Impressive car and driver combo indeed.

I noticed that the CGT knew his way around the track pretty well too. The BMW driver picked the right car to follow, and good thing he had the power to keep up!

You could tell the BMW was taking different lines, not far off, but just to enough so you can see a bit difference in handling characteristics.

It's really amazing a 20+ year old car (sure with some upgrades) can keep up with the 'Ring monster.

inso 08-16-2006 08:29 AM

a fellow ringroller analyzed that video, he said that both of the drivers did not have a clue about the real racing line, bmw is fast and so is cgt, cgt seemed to use the track in full width too, but still the line he used was far from the optimal.

Just watch initial-d and you understand what i am talking about ;)

If you're talking about jumping the curbs for the "shortest" line possible, just remember is a cartoon.. I know a lot of the stuff in Initial D is true but when it comes to the Ring you can't really jump curbs.

The line the CGT was taking seemed pretty damn close to the ideal line considering there was lots of traffic on the track which doesnt allow you to setup your turns to carry the most amount of speed into the corner.

Dani, you're damn right... this has got to be one of the most BAD ASS E30's ever.

novass 08-16-2006 08:16 PM

Man that is a mean M3! That generation is definitely my favorite of all M3s

RC45 08-19-2006 03:05 PM

How is the M3 "chasing the CGT" if as soon as the track straightens out the BMW is left for dead?

A better tagline would be "an M3 follows a CGT where it can, but is as expected out gunned evrywhere except in the lsowest hairpin bends".

dutchmasterflex 08-19-2006 04:56 PM

RC, you're just never satisfied here on JW are you? ;p

The M3 is chasing the Carrera GT. Sure it does not catch it or over take it, but it is definitely chasing it.
