Montoya to NASCAR?!?!

http://www.speedtv.com/articles/auto/formulaone/28230/

Well, looks like I'll have to learn NASCAR rules and regs now that my favorite driver is in it. Now I'll have one less reason to wake up at 7am on a Sunday to watch an F1 race. This is quite a shocker, I would have thought that the old racers like good but not good enough coulthard, ralf schumacher, trulli, and the others who just stagnate would be out of a seat.

nthfinity 07-09-2006 11:59 AM

still wont watch nascar ;)

i bet Juan Pablo is in it for the money; and i bet the lap times will fall a wee bit

nickthaskater 07-09-2006 12:15 PM

I doubt he's in it for the money, since Williams offered him a ride and I'm guessing that probably paid more than a selectively run NASCAR seat.

Should be interesting though, he's certainly got the aggressiveness to duke it out haha.

sameerrao 07-09-2006 12:38 PM

I think he will fit in like a glove ... I guess I will have to tune in once in a while to see the beautiful Connie Montoya

SFDMALEX 07-09-2006 01:31 PM

ahahah well the best for the sport of F1.

NASCAR is the most profitable form of motorsport, in the world. He is definitely getting more money racing in NASCAR. That's where the money is at in racing..

Yet Schumacher continues to pull in eighty-some odd million a year, while Jeff Gordon makes around twenty-five million (somewhere around there anyways).

Exactly - and the next guy down the list makes about $10 million - right?

Thats the problem wiht F1 - the HUGE difference in earnings of the drivers.

NASCAR drivers have salaries and contingency income. Even a NASCAR rookie earns about $400,000 a year.

Thats not counting the fact that a win at Daytona for example carries a Million Dollar purse.

The F1 team owners, Bernie and Max may make the big money, but not all the drivers.

nickthaskater 07-09-2006 02:17 PM

There may be huge gaps, but even the third drivers are making good money, with a top driver like De La Rosa raking in around $9 million

At the lowest of the low, the drivers still make around $400,000

dutchmasterflex 07-09-2006 02:33 PM

F1 has more problems than dealing with their drivers paychecks... If only they got their heads out of their asses..

Which again goes to support the fact that NASCAR drivers on average make more money than F1 drivers

The privateer that comes in LAST place at a NASCAR fixture even gets paid a contingency fee of about $40,000.

NASCAR races about 40 times a year.. how many F1 races do they run again?

nickthaskater 07-09-2006 02:53 PM

How does that prove on average? I gave an example of the bottom of the barrel salary and suddenly that proves something?

http://i6.tinypic.com/1zf751j.jpg

edit:

A semi-accurate average F1 salary would be around 2 million, as of around 3 years ago anyways, and drivers are making more than ever nowadays so you could probably bump that up a bit, especially with Kimi and Fernando making a hell of a lot more next year than they are now.

SFDMALEX 07-09-2006 02:56 PM

Fuck Nascar.

And Monotoya can fuck off right to it.

And no shit they make good money, they have tons of retarted rednecks watching the sport for reasons that are beyond me. I mean the crowd there doesnt even what makes the cars go but yet they watch it.

I have told you before... I don't post or suggest bullshit. Here is an example of the type of data that is out there - if you bothered to look for it. It may be older data but all indications are the same salary spread is true.

http://www.indiacar.com/index2.asp?p...nfs/budget.htm

Read em and weep.

Quote:

Formula 1 Drivers Salaries
An enormous gap exists between the top paid and the second, third and fourth highest paid drivers with Michael Schumacher's basic salary at Ј19.1 million compared to BAR driver, Jacques Villeneuve's, Mika Hakkinen's and Eddie Irvine's Ј6.3 million.

The top six is rounded off with Ralf Schumacher on Ј3.8 million followed by Rubens Barrichello in sixth place earning Ј3.5 million.

The rest of the drivers salaries are as follows:

Giancarlo Fisichella Ј2.5 million
Heinz-Harald Frentzen Ј2.2 million
Jarno Trulli Ј2.0 million
Jean Alesi Ј1.9 million
David Coulthard Ј1.7 million
Ricardo Zonta Ј1.7million
Mika Salo Ј1.5 million
Alex Wurz Ј956,000
Johnny Herbert Ј796,000
Nick Heidfeld Ј637,000
Jenson Button Ј191,000
Jos Verstappen Ј159,000
Marc Gene Nil
Gaston Mazzcane Ј1.2 million
Pedro Diniz Ј5.0 million
Pedro de la Rosa Ј5.0 million

On average, F1 drivers are underpaid in relation to other drivers.

You are just angry because you hate NASCAR, and it turns out to be more of a money maker than your precious F1. ;)

For the record I dislike both racing series :P

nickthaskater 07-09-2006 03:23 PM

I looked at that exact list actually, and based my reply around it. That list is from 2002 or earlier, so I adjusted slightly for drivers like Ralf Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen, and the natural increase that has occurred over the last 4 years, and is only going to increase substantially again next season (for example, Ralf Schumacher is now making around 20 million, not ~6 million as reported back then). Also, don't forget to note that those dollar amounts are in british pounds, which equate to nearly double the amount when converted to USD.

And I never denied that there was a gap in salaries, hell, I clearly agreed on it, but you were going on about averages, and on average the modern salary is at the very least 2 million, excluding any outside income or race bonuses.

And by the way, I'm actually watching the NASCAR pre-race show at this very moment, just like I do every weekend, so you can be the one to go and weep thank you very much.

would a losing team really pay that much for a losing driver?

I don't quite get what you're trying to say with your post, but yes Toyota does pay him that much, more than likely just for his last name, and I suspect because Toyota seems to love pissing away enormous amounts of money.

just goes to show that pissing money around doesn't make you a contender.

Based on Ralf's last 3 seasons, i wouldn't pay him 20 mills...

Well BUSCH is heading up to Quebec next year for a road race, hopefully Cup will follow suit. Road races are pretty exciting with 43 big ass stock cars barrelling around, there definitely needs to be more of them.

saadie 07-09-2006 09:18 PM

hehe .. yeah he might do good on oval circuits
but really .... he should tuen to DTM or Le man or something ... :?

Face that facts, he's crushed by Kimi. He prolly realize that also and will prolly not able to win the wc unless the current top 3 quits.

JOLIET, Ill. -- Why would Juan Pablo Montoya trade Monte Carlo and Melbourne for Darlington and Martinsville -- and likely take a pay cut in the process? Montoya, who won the Indianapolis 500 in 2000, will try to translate his open-wheel success to NASCAR.

The Formula One star said he's looking for a more enjoyable atmosphere and a new racing challenge, and thinks he'll find it in NASCAR next year.

"It's not how many millions you're making or how much money you're making," Montoya said at Chicagoland Speedway on Sunday. "It's a matter of, three years down the line, are you going to be excited at what you're doing or not? And three years down the line, when I look at my career, I'll be a lot happier doing this."

Says likely - not will.. so it is just as unlikely he will - NASCAR has no salary caps and in fact most all NASCAR payouts (salary, endorsements and contingency monies) are kept very confidential.

It is said only the Team Owners, Drivers and the IRS know the enormous amount these guys collect in total... ;)

nickthaskater 07-10-2006 02:34 AM

So if it's so secretive and confidential, how do you justify yourself running on and on about how they're paid more?

Uhm - by using the very resources you didn't bother to...

try say a google search on F1 salaries...

then a google search on NASCAR salaries.

And how is it you justify yourself running on and on about what you do?

coloradosilver 07-10-2006 03:01 AM

JPM said in the news confrence this morning that he would NOT be making as much in NASCAR as he would have in F1. It may not be in the news article, but I saw it live this morning and thats what he said.

If you would bother reading, you would've seen that I already searched for Formula 1 salaries, and even found the very listing that you posted, upon all of which I based my responses, along with my prior knowledge on the subject.

As for NASCAR, I found Jeff Gordon's, who is of course one of the very top drivers of the sport, so his salary would be a fairly good base for a high end one. I've also found details on Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s salary from around the time he passed, which was speculated to be around 7-10 million based on various facts (no concrete answer however). And providing you have half a clue about anything regarding the subject, you would know that he was probably the modern NASCAR benchmark prior to Jeff Gordon, as far as payment goes.

So really, you're the one who's just pulling things out of his ass for the sake of arguing, and I'm the one presenting factual evidence and logical answers.

And thank god is right, it's about time you closed it.

ANd of course you know that the salary is only one aspect - but why not - you of course must be right.

Afterall - if I don't know the answer, then you MUST know it.

I mean - it's other my view or yours tahts correct.

Right?

Whats it feel like to win an intardnet argument?

But you haven't really won as you haven't concretely shown that Formula 1 drivers on average earn more than NASCAR drivers.

All you have done is tried to push your opinion on the matter.

And somehow we should note that YOUR opinion counts more thasn mine - right?

I love how people "argue" online.

;)

You haven't proven your own opinion any more thanh you disproved mine.

And not to worry - once Jean Montazuma gets that all important Tequila endorsement he'll be pulling in an extra $2 million a month ;)

Prove me worng :P

nickthaskater 07-10-2006 03:43 AM

So much for closing it RC.

And yes, I know salary is one aspect, but it's the aspect I've been discussing since the beginning, not all of the other bonuses for races, endorsements, etc. since it would be next to impossible to even begin finding out details on those matters.

As for 'winning', I never said I had won anything, but I was at least looking at the facts rather than just running around going on about how NASCAR drivers earn more on average. You talk about concrete, well what I have shown can at least be the framing, you on the other hand haven't shown dick all other than some stats from 4 years ago for Formula 1, which I have already repeatedly commented on.

I have looked around to find the NASCAR drivers' salaries, and have come up with only the most popular (being Earnhardt and Gordon), from which I formed an assumption. With the maximum in NASCAR seeming to be in the 10-15 million dollar range, I highly doubt the overall average is higher than Formula 1, where you have multiple drivers making in excess of the NASCAR range-topping 15 million.

Finally, I have not said or implied that my words mean any more than yours, but a fact is a fact, so you can assume whatever else you want from there, but those facts remain.

Facts? You just admit to assuming and forming an opinoin.

Your "facts" are no more "fact" than ,my "facts".

I highly doubt that Formula 1 drivers on average - on average - on average earn more than NASCAR drivers do on average.

Salary schmalary.

You just feel the need to defend Formula 1 because you hate NASCAR so much :)

The facts I was referring to would clearly be the salaries I listed you daft old fart.

And once again, if you would get off your bitter horse and learn to read, you would know that I rather enjoy NASCAR. I have been a NASCAR fan long before I was ever introduced to Formula 1 as a matter of fact. I grew up in a NASCAR-loving household, have been to several Cup races, and have quite a bit of memorabilia.

You really should have just stuck to your speech about closing the window, it would've done a lot more good than coming back and trying to 'win' an e-argument.

nejcdolinsek 07-10-2006 06:08 AM

When I first heard the news I started laughing  I mean, moving from F1 to NASCAR has got to be the worst demotion possible in motor-racing!

nickthaskater 07-10-2006 06:11 AM

Worst demotion? He chose to do it, and turned down a ride at Williams to pursue it. It's hardly something horrible when you're doing something that makes you happy, and Juan Pablo hasn't seemed this happy in a long time.

dingo 07-10-2006 06:14 AM

Why should we care? If he is happy with it then good for him, whether we think its the wrong move is irrelevant.

Its a new challenge for him, simple as that.

Doing it out of his own will doesn't change the fact that he switched to a form of motor-racing which is at least 5 levels below F1.

You can't call it a "new challenge" considering he hasn't even finished with his current challenge of actually accomplishing anything in F1 :P What hes really doing is giving up

Edit: And I don't really blame him, as he just doesn't have the finesse needed in F1. Hes too much of a latin brute :P

nickthaskater 07-10-2006 06:22 AM

He's won 7 races in F1, which is a lot more than a lot of other racers who have gone on to retire can claim. Maybe he's just grown tired of F1's racing style, and constant long distance travelling? Who knows.

As for him moving to a series that's 5 levels below F1, funny you say that, because even JPM has repeatedly said he is facing a learning curve and doesn't expect to do well for a while. If it really was as below him as you say nej, he should be going into it with full confidence and nail a few wins right off the bat, something he doesn't seem to see happening.

Whats your point? Of course it'll take some time for him to get used to the different driving style, but again, this doesn't change the fact that NASCAR ie. the sport that takes left turns all day, is incomparable with F1 in both the technological aspects and the driving skills required of the sport.

And for further reference, my name is Nejc  :P :D

nickthaskater 07-10-2006 06:36 AM

So if they're incomparable, how is NASCAR 5 levels down from F1? Saying NASCAR is a step down from F1 is comparing them, so nice contradiction Nejc.

Uhhhh..... alright...... no need to get all up in a bunch

Of course you can compare them, as they're both motor sports. Just like I can compare a 5 star restaurant with Pizza hut. You get my drift?
