The car you never have to polish is on the way. It promises to be a boon for anyone who has to battle the bucket for weekend car-wash duties in drought conditions.

BMW is working hard on a matt finish paint that will end the drudgery and could rewrite the rules on car styling and presentation.

It made the first move with its M Coupe concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year and, after a lot of interest from potential customers, is fast-tracking development of the new paint.

BMW says it wants to be first but has to overcome many problems, from applying the paint in factories to preserving it against everything from sap and tar to fingerprints.

"Surfaces on the vehicle turn to sculpture with this paint," Z4 Coupe project manager Timo Gobel says.

He gave the update at the preview of the Z4 Coupe in Portugal. BMW displayed a bodyshell with the same matt finish as the Frankfurt car.

"It is a big technical challenge," Gobel says. "There are many changes necessary, from the factory paintshop to caring for the finish.

"We have no idea yet on how we will be able to repair it."

He says research is moving into testing on everything from durability to protecting the paint without detracting from the matt finish.

"It will be some time before this paint is available," Gobel says.

The Z4 Coupe comes in another big year for BMW, which already has the Z4 M Roadster on sale in Australia and will have the latest 3-Series Coupe in showrooms before the end of the year.

It ran a full-scale media driving program for the red-hot M Coupe model, including laps at the Estoril circuit once used for Formula One.

It also showed the "civilian" 3.0si model, though there was no car for road-testing and the display model was customised to highlight the choices available from BMW's Individual division.

Both cars will be available in Australia about September, with the si model less than $100,000 and the Z4 M Coupe about $125,000.

that'd really be sweet, hopefully they can solve the challenge of protecting the paint. that's something i always wondered about all the matte black cars out there, they must get really dirty really quickly.

I've yet to see a car with matte color that I liked :\

Be it the LP640 or a Ferrari 550 or a Toyota... looks too bland and unexiting.

mmm...well if it works out it could be badass. it'd be nice to see a matte color other than black

Volvo is also gonna offer this. IMHO this will be the new trend.....

It looks really great on hot rods and such...gives them a unique look, but on a BMW, not sure...although that matte finished F550 is pretty cool.

I really like the matt black Ferrari 575 TT photographed. That car looked gorgeous in that color.

And we all know AUDIs paint will add 35% more understeer to the car, just a proven fact. :lol:

I guess it'll go well with your new matt black MacBook :bah:

I actually think shiny cars look better. I always stand back to look at my parents' car after washing it, and it's not even mine!

Well, I don't think it's gonna look as matte as primered hotrods. I think it's gonna be more like this:

Last week I saw a black matte 360 Modena, just like the Maranello we already have seen. Unfortunately I couldn't take a picture of it bit it was absolutely gorgeous 8)

When major car manufactures start offering it it will definitely be the new trend..

Which definitely sucks because part of the reason having a matte finished car now is that it's rare and unique ;)

the reflection is what makes cops get you. If you want to speed, then matte color will make you be safer from cops! Especially black matte!

Cool pics, but I rather have it shiny. I think whoever did that, is just lazy to wash car. If you have that paint, I wouldnt think you'd use wax on it.

Don't you think the car would be harder to wash since of the matte finish on the Ferrari?

I think it could be even easier to wash. Since it's not polished there is no wax or anything like that so you don't have to polish it very intensively to get it shiny perfect so it could be much faster to wash too. And it's going to get dirty as fast as the polished gets whatever technology they research.

either way it's gonna be a bitch to get scratches out. :(

I cannot imagine a red matte Ferrari F50. However I can imagine a matte black CGT. I think it would look amazing-> Batman suit included. :wink:

never got to thinking about that, but yeah you are correct. Unlike with shiny paint, there is no clearcoat layer to remove in case you want to remove fine swirl marks. I've dedicate a big amount of time researching about cleaning methods and products. I've spent over 900US $ till now on car products and microfiber towels (porter cable orbital included), and I wouldnt even know where to start cleaning matte paint.

Yeah, I don't know about this. I remember the Z4 Coupe prototype was in a Matte Silver finish and they said they'll think about offering it when it becomes production. The engineer also mentioned that it was a difficult finish to manufacture and make reliable as well. A prototype car only has to last a few months/years, where as a production cars paint has to last maybe upwards of 20 years.

But I gotta see it in person first. That said, my new MacBook in Matte Black looks awesome, except it really attacts finger prints and smudges A LOT!

Actually when the matte Maranello was at the dealer I asked if I could check out the "fingerprints potential" and it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be: didn't see any obvious marks when I tried to touch it
