Mar 22 - Jaguar XJR indepth!
 

Well well, here is another indepth! And with it, an hint of a couple of the following ones ;) it was actually our first group test for asphalte! Th ebasic idea was to take all the mainstream big saloon, M5 and E55 included but some last minute problems let us with just three cars and the test was transformed in a XKR vs Quattroporte test with the RS6 as a judge ;) And we start with the british lady, finished in a perfect british green :) and equally perfect beige interior!

No, I didnt' drive the car, I was just sort of a mix between a young yuppie executive and photographer ;)
I have to tell you already that on a straight line the Quattroporte is absolutely unable to keep up! The XJR has AMAZING punch! Really unbelievable! I wasn't prepared to it, but no matter how hard we tried, the XJR was always pulling away with no fuss thanks to a well judged automatic box! it has plenty of nice gizmos like the defrosting front window (now democratized on many cars actually) or the very cool radar working with the cruise control and braking for you on the highway in case a slow car pops up in front of you! We tested it even while leaving the highway with the car in front slowing down quite strongly from 140 to 50 and well again no fuss, the Jag breaks and keep the same distance (you can set on different distance settings). All the rest is top notch, seats, interir finish, everything! it's great inside out and both the front or rear seats are comfy! Suspensions are to prone to roll, that's a fact and engine note is utter crap with the kompressor spoiling it even more. But again, it goes effortlessly when you need to, and can cruise like an S Klass in other moments. It was actually also pretty photogenic, so all in all, I liked it.. and still, the Quattroporte although slower, has so much more presence, especially thanks to its Fuchs free exhaust ;) but her time will come soon, let's bring on the XJR pics ;)

That's not exactly the car I would like to see in one of your indepth's ( I rather prefer the stunning Quattroporte ) but it's obviously nice !!!

It's obvious for me that in this car category, my choice will be always the beautiful and mighty //RS6. But I always appreciated the XJR, about that, I very like the superb silver Jag XJR armoured with 5 spoke mag wheels and turn blue signal of the PM Tony Blair official car's. :P

Nice in-depth as always TT, love the photography in the snow. A shame the RS6 had its winter tyres and not its standard 19" 5 spokers. How did the RS6 compare to the XJR in a straight line - faster than both?

Well, we never really pinned it against the other two since it was following when we really tried, but as far as we could see, the RS6 would own the QP in a straight line (talking about "human" speeds, no idea what happens above 200 or such), but not so sure it could have the XJR :shock:
On the twisties though, there is no history ;)

I was about to skip this indepth, because this Jag just doesn't warm my heart ... even if your pics are great as we are used to see them, the car in it looks "uncool" IMO, sorry :bah:

then I "forced" myself to read your comments. :shock: , My opinion on the car is raising and I'm happy having read your review. Must be a better car than I thought :wink:

Amazing pics as usual TT, congrats. I've never been a fan of the XJ really, I've alwayst thought it was kinda boring, but I don't know what you do, but it looks amazing in your pics...

LOL guys, to be honest, I don't expect this indepth to get that many clicks. Like you and me, most ppl are just not interested in this car. As good as it can be, it's an old man's car, I am sorry :D and doesn't excite us! I guess a couple of granpa's will maybe one day stumble upon my pics while looking for infos on a second hand XJR ;)
But seriously, as said, it can be quite a bullet when you need to and I am sure for long trips it will be definitely one of the best choices in its class!

I will save the pics so I can view them when I turn 75 and buy something like this. :P

Serioulsy though it is a very good car and by the sounds of it fast enough aswell, but its a Jag and big so thats a thumbs down from me. The pics are great however, and once again a stunning backdrop with the snow. :D

Indeed, komotar, TT has taken some great shots yet again...

I don't like the look of the XJR as it is dechromed - the front grille surround being bodycoloured just doesn't look right on a Jag, IMHO.

I'd still have one though, lol, just maybe it would look better in silver or black. Anyway, if I had an XJR I would debadge it and go for stealth mode. That was the most fun thing about my Saab, other drivers just did not expect it to be so quick and I 'surprised' a number of people with it!

That day we had lot of time, so I just went for 1/80 and took a shit load of pics to have 2 or 3 sharp ones for every car ;)

thanks for pics. Like always there is plenty of great pics. New XJ is one of the best Jaguar ever and This XJR must be reel beast. But honestly after I saw RS6 pics I want to see this babay as soon as possible please!!!
