I took the lid off my airbox... *Updated with pics/vids*
...sounds like a touring car!
I am so going to have to do a vid of it, it sounds fantastic at wide-open throttle! I haven't removed the air filter, just in case anyone's worried...I may be childish but not completely stupid! |
It might actually suck in more hot air without the lid.
|
Make the vid happen, I want to hear it.
|
^^ As do I!

...any way, the air is being taken in from the same general area, just more of it (same temp as originally - right ;) :P ?) so he should be breathing easier... and "hot air" is pretty much all you get in a Texas summer :P |
I did something similar last weekend actually, on the WRX there is a resonator between the air intake at the front and the airbox which I removed.....now I can hear it sucking in the air even more and even a slight whistle from the BOV when getting off the gas. :D

Basically the stock inlet hole with the lid on gives about 4 square inches gap for the air to pass into the airbox and then thru the filter. Taking the lid off, practically the whole of the cone filter is exposed to suck air in. Of course, the induction roar is the reason I did this, not for any performance gains! It is sucking in hot air, however as RC said, the air is being taken in from the same general area, just more of it, with ambient temps of 88-92F this weekend it's hardly 'cold air' to start with! Pics will come later, as will a couple of short vids (with and without the airbox lid). My camera is pretty crap for video (320x320) but the audio is always ok. I think it sounds like the S2000 should sound now  I will be interested in your opinions after I post the vids - I'll try and do it tonight. Quote:
I am not sure if it's the same for all turbo cars but on the Saab you could add a 3" downpipe with a race cat to really let that turbo sing. (I only had a 2.5" catback which barely made any difference) |
Hey T/A - any reason you posted this in thew Spam locale?
This is a legitimate car mod and should go in What I drive ;) hehe -- or have you noticed as I that the Spam thread gets more traffic... ;) hehe |
You're quite right, if anyone has mod privileges and wants to move the thread, then please do!
:D |
that is kind of what i did with my ranger. The intake piping and airbox on my year aren't really clogged up with anything. But there is a splash guard right behind the front bumper. and when i removed that, behold, the opening to the intake. its about a 4-5in opening and now i have a stock ram air :) I will try and get some pics to show what i am talking about.
But T/A thats some of the best mods...... Free ones  |
Indeed, pikey mods as we call them in the UK!
A good one on the LS1 engines is to bypass the coolant which goes through (and warms) the throttle body. You can also dremel quite a bit out of the 'Ram Air' plastic intake (thinking of the Trans Am WS6) I am sure RC knows about these ones already, though  |
Nice, can't wait to hear what it sounds like. I have an intake on my car, and it makes a world of difference in sound. Even if it doesn't give me any horsepower I don't care...it just sounds so cool.
The best part of it is, unlike an exhaust, your car isn't super loud all the time, only when you really get on it and are above a certain RPM does it really get loud...;) |

yeah the rangers have a hotwater-bypass mod which re-routes the coolant (heating/warming) the intake manifold. But if it gets to cold where you live then you need it. but Texas, FL etc. could go without it.
edit: here are some pics of my intake mod http://img57.imageshack.us/img57/145...76209wr.th.jpg Thr front of the truck (duh) http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/5...27807xn.th.jpg the gap between the bumper and body leading to opening http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/1...11006fw.th.jpg opening behind the bumper about 2x5 in. http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/7...66101am.th.jpg tubing leading from opening to filter box. http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/2...98905fg.th.jpg opening in filter box, about 2in. http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/5...56701ma.th.jpg tubing from filter boxe to intake manifold. |
Ok as promised here is a pic of the airbox with the lid on and off, you can see how much more air can get sucked in with the lid off!

Come one man, I need some before and after footage. Not really being all that familiar with the way an S2000 sounds during acceleration has me clueless to how it sounds with the lid on.
|
It just so happens I have a vid I shot last summer, you'll see in the following that you don't hear much beyond second gear with the lid on...but this is more due to wind noise than anything. Compare this with the 'roof down' vid in the post above...
Click here to watch withairboxlidfitted I'll try and get some drive by vids at the weekend  |
There we go, now I can see the difference. Definitely has more grunt to the sound with the lid off.

But still you have a snorkel that helps route the air from outside, with the lid removed you'll be getting in more air from the engine bay, which is hot air. Definitely the you might experience a gain in HP because of the increase air even if it is hot air. |
