Official: Turbo is back - BMW
8)
306hk,400nm BMW today released new details on its much-rumored N54 Bi-Turbo Engine. The motor is expected to appear in the 2007 BMW 335i and 2007 BMW 335ci (coupe). The engine has an output of 306 horsepower and maximum torque of 295 lbs.-ft (400 Nm). BMW said it has already tested a 3-Series sedan with the engine, and achieved a 0-62mph time of 5.7 seconds. BMW said the engine is relatively lightweight — about 70kg less than its 4.0-liter V8 engine. According to the automaker, the 3.0-liter engine has little or no turbo lag, thanks to two small turbos instead of one large one. Maximum torque is achieved between 1500 and 5800 rpm. What we know so far: BMW will show its new E92 3-Series coupe at the Geneva Motor Show along with this new engine. What's no entirely clear is whether this engine will make it to North America. Recent rumors suggested this turbo engine would be exclusive to Europe, and a different naturally-aspirated powerplant would drive the 335 in North America. http://www.m5board.com/photopost/upl...579/Send01.jpg http://www.m5board.com/photopost/upl...579/Send03.jpg http://img361.imageshack.us/img361/2082/send044ha.jpg http://img361.imageshack.us/img361/369/send027bh.jpg[/ |
Wooohooo... !!! FINALLY after last Turbo BMW from Alpina...
Great NEWS!!! Thanx Just_me... Awesome Engine + it's " about 70kg less than its 4.0-liter V8 engine" V8 alluminium engine... No words. Should be best engine for 2007. Great potential for boostin  |

Propably a great engine but 306bhp from this bi-turbo doesn't sound that inspiring. Frankly I'm a little dissapointed. I'd rather have a NA 330Ci (if there's going to be one?). Only 0.6s slower to 100km/h and definetely no turbo lag. |
dissapointed ?! WTF ?! 306HP = just for selling. Like it was with Skyline's GT-R in Japan. Buy this car with 280HP and tune it to 400hp easily
Rise the boost and DIE with 400hp BMW  |

well... anyway this engine got GREAT potential. like RS4/RS6 (Turbo engines), like GT2 engine and so on...
|
this is a great news, but i too expected to be in the S4 range 340HP, but this will do :D :P and the 0-100kph is good too :D
|
this isn't a real bi-turbo like the old audi s4 right? i thought this engine had one turbo for low RPM and the other for the higher end...not 2 for the whole range.
(100th post!) |

And if it has two turbos that makes is a "real" bi-turbo in any case. Guess what bi means  |
Instead of one big Turbo, this one have two small turbos. One for low rpm and one for higher rpm. I think it works the same as Toyota Supra?
400nm available between 1500-5800rpm. Redline begins at 7000rpm. Tested in E90: 80-120kmh in 6.3s (eg. 330i in 8.2s) 0-100kmh in 5.7s (eg. 330i in 6.3s) I bet from 0-200km/h, the turbo will cut the time by several seconds. |

A redline at 7000rpm sounds interesting for a turbo. At what rpm is max power? |

Har tyvärr inget svar på din fråga (I dont have an asnwer for you) |

Even if it's a BMW I would be suprised if max power is close to 7000rpm. Would be one cool turbo engine though. Well I guess it's a cool turbo engine anyway.. |

At least they are better than Mercedes  |

..They are on the right way now.. |

It's not the same 2-stage turbo method like the 535d and Supra for instance. |

Yeah, I think that they wouold want to be carefull about how much power it makes because they want the M3 to be clearly the fastest 3 and the sports car of the range.
|
Flat torque band is often legitimized to be for drivability, but is also due to the fact taht torque kills transmissions so 400Nm flat is cheaper in the long run. Of course, this means there is a lot more to come when chip tuners get a hold of the engine - like on any turbo engine :D

pretty impressive! they just didnt go for all out performance. reliability, noise, emissions, fuel economy, etc. are taken into consideration. :|

I guess the HP range going to continue for a bit. Now your average sedans/coupes will have over 300bhp. |
