Just drove the M5
 

and is my neck fucking sore!!!

It came in for the Vanos oil line recall yesterday. Drove it a little bit then just to make sure it wasn't leaking. Traffic was bad by the time i got out so just took it for a spin around the block.

Well the jackass owner brings it back saying i didn't fix shit because there was still a quart (read: 3 drops) of oil in his driveway :roll: So after removing the panels and cleaning them and rechecking the oil level, my shop foreman tells me i need to reset the sensor and drive the car for awhile until it starts reading right (i haven't been to M5 class so i have idea how the system works. There is no dipstick and oil level monitoring can take up to 30 miles to read the correct level :roll: stupid ass idea IMO)

So, i finally get a chance to get onto a stretch of freeway that is somewhat uninhabited. Made a quick run up to 75 in 400hp mode with the shift setting at S5. The responsiveness is insane, the shifts are beautifully brutal and quick and the noise :love: :drool:

The road i'm on is 10 miles of damn near pure straight-a-way. A few sweeping curves but nothing that would cause you to lift too horribly. I've got the radio off and i'm just basking in the sound of the V10 practically idling in 7th gear at 2600 RPM (about 80 iirc). Finally the end of the road comes up. i pull off into a driveway to turn around, set the controls to P500 and start off back the way i came. The sound was incredible. 10 X more so than P400. It's got a much louder, direct howl. Out of the bottom of my eye i can see enough of the HUD's tach display to know i'm closing in on redline, and just before it tops off, the display flashes and i smack the paddle. The shift was had enough to cause me to realize that i really should have been sitting all the way against the back of the seat (hence the sore neck) still in S5(i didn't dare turn off the DSC and go S6) i go through 2nd and 3rd as if they weren't there before letting off.

There was one more straight section coming up and it was all clear, so down my foot went and up the speedo went. Bugs hittng the windshield are quite noisy at 130 :lol: I decided that was enough and put it back in P400 and cruised back to the shop.

One of the things i find quite interesting is the side supports on the seat will "hug" you as you go into a turn to keep you from sliding. As you go into a left, the right side will push you back, and vise versa. Very interesting feeling if you aren't used to it :lol:

This car is absolutely amazing. Not being a racecar driver, or even owning a high powered car, i admit the power on tap is enough to spook me into thinking that i don't want to drive a Ferrari anytime in the very near future, let alone turning off the traction control in P500 Sport. I compltey zoned out of the fact that this is a sedan. It just doesn't feel like one.

I eagerly await the arrival of our first M6 in a few months :D

In S5 and 6 and D5 they are pretty harsh. But in the lwer programs they are fairly soft.

Starting out isn't as bad as the magazines and shows say it is. If you lightly apply the accelerator, the clutch will gently engage. The faster your foot goes down, the harer the clutch engages.

So does it keep a log of, miles driven and top speed and stuff? Say that the owner could look at?

it was definetly an experience to remember. I hope to ave a similar write up when the E90 M3 comes out but that may be awhile :( So far this is the highlight of my short career :D

:lol: I've posted pics the car itself when it was in the show room, but there is no way i can pics of it while driving. That would be a little suspicious :lol: Besides, it's handling is amazing, but i would not venture taking my off the wheel long enough to snap a pic of it. my comfort level isn't quite there yet :lol:

the car is still here though. BMW may have me replace the oil level sensor and send it back to them so they can determine what needs to be changed to make an updated part.

I can understand why you not post pics and to I dont see nothing wrong driving car a bit faster if that what it takes to make it work fine then :wink:

Yeah but you get to race cars on the weekend. I'd glaly switch with you for a week if it meant getting to race :(

I"m sure he'd bitch and moan, but just because he's an asshole.

He'd be more relived if the engine blew up on us rather than him, but BMW would cover it because the oil level sensor isn't operation correctly. And since there is no dipstick to check it (again, stupid fucking idea) there would have been no way for us to know wether oil was low or not without draining and measuring the oil, which i just did.

You don't have to be an arsehole to not appreciate someone else beating the piss out of YOUR new expensive automobile.

i would hardly call it "beating the piss" out if it. Epecially since the engine was DESIGNED for it.

and at least this way, we know there isn't any air in the Vanos hydraulic circuit :D

Must have been quite a cool experience. I think I would have gotten the same feeling: thank god for that traction control with 500hp on tap...

My dads car had a range display based on the fuel consumption of the last 30kms. And at one time I only had 20 min to do about 30kms so I was pushing it as fast as I could. My dad said that the next day he saw the range double after half an hour :P I had resetted all the other stuff (average speed, ...) but I couldn't do the same for the range .

yeah, the traction control isn't as much of a babysitter as what JC says it is, but it's nice to know it's there.

The avg speed fortunately doesn't really indicate much about the trip. and the consumption avg. was already low when it came in. I had to take the car to lunch again today and just tooled around in it to get my food, so the consumption figure should have changed. Luckily i work near the college here in town so when i went to lunch, guess where i went cruising :mrgreen: :lol:

I'd also like to say again, that all the complaints that the magazines log against the SMG in city traffic is a bunch of hooey. and JC is off his rocker as well. the thing they see when they get into the car is the gas and brake pedals so in their minds it's an automatic transmission, which we all know you can stomp on and you won't go anywhere until the torque converter gets the fluid going in the trans. It doesn't occur to them that the SMG is a manual transmission with an electro-hydraulic system attatched to it to actuate the clutch and gear change, and as soon as you start applying the gas, the clutch is let out by the system and the mechanical connection is made between the engine and trans, just like your average 5 or 6 spd gearbox. The harder and faster you press, the faster the clutch is engaged. so as long as you ease on the gas, the clutch will ease into the flywheel and you'll start to move seamlessly. This isn't to say that you can stomp on it the moment you feel movement, because it'll just dump the clutch and give you and your passengers whiplash. It just takes a little bit of patience to get the feel of it. Something magazines and Jeremy Clarkson don't seem to have.

Manufacturers will straight up tell you "just because it can do that doesn't mean we will support the product if you do" ;)

C'mon, that is something a lot of mechanics (all around the world) do to know if a car consumes oil and things like that...

Where's the proof of that?

AFAIK BMW has never revoked a warranty for driving a car hard unless it was bought to be a track rat.

all the M3 motors that have failed have been warrantied. Hell , BMW even warranties a clutch :wink:

the 3 series may blend in with every other car out there.. .but at least they are sitll doing something with the Z4... something i like... and the coupe concept even more :)

honestly, there is no longer an Audi that is a direct competitor to the M5/M6 so i see no reason to bash it :wink: since the new RS6 is going directly after mercedes in terms of power, and retaining its BMW-ish handling... and winter surviving... also, the price bracket is going to be something else entirely.

in the words of RC... "oh no, not the infamous BMW speedometer again" lol
