WRX STI crashing against Canyon Wall !
|
OMG !!! dirty driver :fist:
|
hmm... wierd.
i couldn't see it, but it looks like he may have started to have oversteer, then he countersteered, had too much grip, and sent him into the wall... perhaps some sand on the road? |
hm....not seeing any excuse for that one, but maybe the road has some strange dips in it :?
pretty crazy sight, nonetheless, glad the driver is fine. |
If he lifted up off the gas during steering, the wieght shift might be to blame.

an old video i once saw a corvette oversteer, lift off/counter steer, and grip was obtained much quicker then the driver thought, and he careened into a crowed of people, and he didnt move the wheel fast enough after he cought the slide... thats kinda what i think happened here |
Just watched it again. It seems like the bike coming on the other side of the road might have suprised him alittle. Then he brakes and that upsets the car abit.
|
The situation would have been better if he didn't try to counter steer out of it and let the rear flip around.
|
^ Agreed  , kinda reminds me of the guy with the miata that understeer and crashed out

yeah shit happens.
there are so many variables in motorised vechicle control that it only takes one odd difference and bam. you hit a canyon wall. i've done the exact same thing on a dirt road. its not as easy as it looks guys. even pros fuck up. |
Yep, we all make mistakes and this was clearly the driver over-correcting.

Looking at the video in slow motion, it appears the decreasing radius and the bike had him off throttle and trail braking (you can clearly see the weight transfer way more violently than previous corners.
Wether counter steering or not, an off throttle snap oversteer might just as easily result in a full spin or a snap understeer response (similar to a motorcycle highsiding in mid oversteer slide). It can and does happen to pros driving on the edge, don't be so hard on the guy - at least he wsa out enjoying the Scooby in the wild... Oh - and notice how well behaved the Corvette was :P ;) hehe |

Damn. . . that gotta hurt.
|
lolthe driver = noob.
but if i was driving, id be in the wall on the first turn. me =owner of a 98 civic = cant drift or anything else couse its FF = im uber noob0r. |
How many of us haven't screwed up when driving at the limit?
Just because he happened to wreck doesn't mean he is such an ametuer driver. It can happen anytime.. to anyone.. just got to be careful and make sure you don't involve anyone else when it happens. |

Big failing of the WRX's is snap oversteer from either hitting the anchors or lifting off mid corner. Not really noticable under 60MPH. I got caught out by this a few times, thankfully its on the track. Off camber corner, downhill, I lifted tapped the brakes and spun- twice! I learned on the third lap (funny like it said in initial D) is to plant it to stop understeer after you've hit the anchors, not like a RWD car like a vette, where you can lift or brake and not have an issue. I wouldnt call them amatures but foolish. Any performance car you have to go beyound the limit on the track and learn its weaknesses. |

Sure, however, I could imagine taking a blind corner moderately fast and suddenly a motorcycle appears could make one quickly lift the throttle without contemplating how it is going to upset the car. Maybe he could be considered an ametuer driver because he took a blind corner too fast. |
WRX STI is an easy car to drift, so it's no problem if rear slips ... He couldn't do tahtm, so he's an amateur ...

Siutation he was going into a corner hot, motorcylcist apears leans into the corner WRX driver does what he can to avoid hitting him, which he did. But upsets the balence of the car at the limit, if the motorbike didnt appear he be right, like a track. Sure hitting the anchors mid corner isn't professional but neither is killing a innocent motorcylist. As I said foolish not amature. |
incase anyone was curious, that was Angeles Forest Highway... a road that meets up with Angeles Crest Highway, that I ususally ride on at least once a week.
|
corpse looks like a fun road no? but yeah i wouldnt call that amateur but much better than killing a motorcyclist. but jakaracman you would be relying on instinct when something like that happens and for most people that is to slam on the brakes.

Just check my avatar ... That's me driving ... And I can drift almost any car except some really fast ones (well, F430 drifts quite nice but I can't seem to get really friendly with 911, and i have never driven enzo or SLR or ...). So please do not advise me to shove anything anywhere until I start to get smart about such cars ... |
I withdraw my words from you’re a$$
Its not your car though is it, looks like that STi is set for drift IMO. If you lose traction and maintain that state, ie drift, even with stock suspension settings, thats realtivliy easy because its predictable on a track. Snap over steer is different. breaking traction and regaining it unexpectantly is what happened here, not drift but "microdrift". You cant regaining snap oversteer in such a narrow road, a track yes - while going onto the grass. Best way is to prevent it by going to the track and learning to drive the car at the limit. Drift is fun and all but you really dont learn how the handle the car properly and its idiosyncracies. Its like doing a burnout and saying you know the car IMO |
No, it's not my car, actually, that was my firstr time in Impreze STI Spec C. And is completely, 100% stock with no modification whatoever.
The problem with driver such as the one in video is that they never try their car on the limit then they go and drive semi-fast on the road. Even more: they never take any advanced driving course and could not catch oiversteering var if they had an airfield available., They just heard somewhere that you have to "steer into the slide", so whenever the rear slides even a bit they put on full opposite lock, which is (as seen) recipe for disatrer. Impreza, for exapmlle, requires at mos only a tiny bit of countrer steer, as it is normaly heavy understeering car. So if you just reduce steering loc a bit and keep on throttle, it wil straighten itself out. The basic: learn your car bebore you go dirivin fast on such roads. Otherwise, you're (not you, driver who does that) stupid amateur ... And the you blame the car, the road, everybody else and acts of god ... :? |
Your 100% right there, and as a WRX driver I see this a lot. They mod the car rather learn some skills. Real tools sports car drivers out there, real idiots. I wouldn’t mind but they are giving the rest of us a bad name when they kill themselves and others in high speed accidents like this.
Thankfully I started doing driver training days and continue to do so. One thing with drifting a WRX is that you control the slide more with the throttle than the steering, like you said tiny bit of counter steer. But you have to be on power though or you will understeer into a wall, very different to a RWD car. Spec C I would love to have driven that but they don’t sell the Spec C version here , the bastards! So whats your favourite car all up anyway? |
Favorite cer all up? Well, I dont know actaully. Money no limits something like 612 Scaglietti (if it would look nicer), for sensible money something like 330i and so on ... It's impossible to decide ...
Anywy - in a month or so I'll get the chance to drive the 2006 impreza (STI including) on the racetrack, I hipe they cured some of that understeer ... |
