AMS chief editor Bernd Ostmann has been the first mag tester that had the pleasure to ride 400+ in the EB 16.4 Bugatti Veyron at VW test course Ehra-Lessien...

some impressions what he said about that day...

the track has been kinda damp in the morning, kinda scary at 400km/h, so 111m/sec without crash barries like in Nardo, well not really, rear wing setup to 2° so 40 to 50kg downforce at rear axle engineers promise that this´ll be enough for a smooth ride even on wet pavement...
through the first corner with 220 easily - absolute brutal accelerating up to 300 within seconds a light left hand bend with 380 - looking into the rear mirror - just an enormous spray but just like they told the EB16.4 is a very smooth car to ride even at that speeds...
the sepcial Michelin tires are working just perfect, they were tested up to 500km/h and before a high speed run they require 3bar pressure - this is one of the points the driver has to go through with a check list and a second car key to unlock the high speed mode - here the two front diffusor flaps are closed, the rear wing selects 2° and the body is lowered to 6.5cm front and 7cm rear a sepecial system is monitoring everything and when only one parameter is not ok the car automatically switches to handling-mode...
the first run ended with "only" 380km/h - the car switched to handling because the exhaust temperatures reached critical 970°C - cooling down the car at 220 or 5000rpm in 4th gear...
the weather gets better, it´s much warmer now and engineers force the AMS team to "act" - next run 398km/h - this time it´s the driver´s fault as he has enabled the A/C on the previous cooling lap costing some km/h on that fast run - so again a cooling lap and then full concentration on the last run with nearly 400 the rpm showed 5800 in 7th gear, now it shows 6200rpm at a speed of 402km/h ...

braking is again a new experience 31.4m (!!!) from 100 to 0 with a 1950kg car...

on the other hand acceleration is also outstanding - measured 25m long black rubber from all four wheels after the standard sprint with launch-control - result: 2.5sec to 100 and 7.3 to 200 :shock:

on a side note - at 400 km/h the EB16.4 needs ONE liter fuel for ONE kilometer so they calculated every 12min a gas station on autobahn when driving 400 :wink:


haven´t seen anything yet but i think there´ll be a special on AMS-TV in one of the following shows, be sure it´ll be posted here asap... :)

So bascially the time it take me to say "What the fuck?" in a normal rate, the car already accelerate to 100km/h..... :shock: :shock:

1L/km @ 0.111km/s translate to 9L/s ......... I would like to see the fuel injectors @ work lol

...straight line for sure 8) ....when it get´s a bit more "interesting" so e.g. on a track like nordschleife......."no thank u..." :wink:

Thanks St-Anger! those are some insane acceleration and braking figures :shock: seriously, for a car that weighs that must those brakes must be of other-worldly materials to stop it that fast!

also, does anyone know what Michelin used to test the tires to 500km/hr?

It can't be 9L/s cos the fuel rings in F1 do 12.1L/s. :shock:

In fact it is 0.111L/s
0.111/s x 60s = 6.66L/m
6.66L/m x 12m = 79.92L

I think this is the correct figure 0.111/sec :D

Still that should be a problem for the people in UAE.

^^ He7lius is right. You multiply not divide. Exactly, what you wrote means the litre lasts more than a second.

Also if i'm not wrong the fuel consumption isn't that bad really.

If it takes 0.111L/s / 16 cylinders = 0.0069375L/s/cynlinder

Ich hatte noch nie Probleme mit den Gummimanschetten an den Gelenkwellen, ausser Marderschäden :wink: - beeindruckend, was für neue technische Herausforderungen entstehen

I honestly don't see how an M5 will do anything of the sort...

Whilst the M5 is more than likely the 'better' car and quicker through the twisty bits etc etc, the sheer speed difference along the final straight (sorry I don't know the name) will destroy the early advantage

...na ja, soooooo viel / oft haben ja auch wir nicht gelegenheit 350+ zu fahren mit unseren autos :wink:
für mich hat Veyron NULL sinn aber als techniker is "er" einfach nur faszinierend - wenn auch mit detailschwächen - aber schließlich bekleidet das ding zweifelsohne vorreiterposition der technologieträger heute...
na ja, wie gesagt, leider hört sich der spaß nach den ersten km "echter" rennstrecke schon wieder auf...

btw, nett ein weiteres - der deutschen sprache mächtiges - mitglied zu haben :P

They have been tested on the mule of the upcoming Veyron GT. A stripped out version with 2002hp top speed of which will be limited to 450km/h. It would allegedly do 520km/h fully derestricted though.

1L/km at 400Km/h only used 0.11L/s not 9L/s you should still have 15minutes for the 100L tank to go empty.

However the range is only 100km !!!!! that's crazy!!! :twisted:

man oh man thats fast...but as st-anger said, even though it is as useful as trying to jump to the moon, it is a nice piece of technology :D
i'd still rather have a McLaren F1 though, or alot of other cars.

that's awesome.........just one note though; i think the acceleration numbers are manufacturer's claims, not independently verified by the magazine.......somebody correct me if i'm wrong.
