DYNO question...
hi
let say u have 2 car.. both have same hp... let say 400hp one is around 1500kg, and one let say around 1300kg dyno on the same day, same time,,, would they produce the same amount of power? or the lighter car would produce a better result? |
im pretty much sure result will be same, its all about question of engine not weight

The heavier car may generate better traction and be less prone to wheel spin on the roller and as a result you may have a SMALL increase in measured torque - but not that it will matter.

If the dyno operaters knew what they were doing and the decreased weight didnt cause the tires to slip on the rollers than they would produce the same result.

On a dyno the car is not moving thus it's weight doesn't play any role.
You have different way to measure the HP of a car on a dyno: flywheel horsepower and wheel horsepower. For the first you plug the dyno "directly" on the engine and for the second... well you measure the output at the driving wheels. Then if the 400HP has been measured using a flywheel dyno, you could have a slight (even thin small or non existent) difference (between the two cars) when you repeat the same test on a wheel dyno (the diff is coming from the transmission components and eventually the wheels breaks... and other rotating components that the engine has to put in motion). |
^^ well - the accepted number is 15% drive train loss for flywheel vs wheel measurements.
So a 400hp car will put about 350hp down at the wheels. The weight might play a small role with regard to traction on the roller, but strapping the car down will normally offset this issue (if it's a chassis dyno measuring wheel torque) - remember, torque is measured and HP is calculated. |

Yes - I misread your piece there - at first it appeared that you indicated very little difference between flywheel hp and wheal hp - but you were indicating that fly wheel for flywheel the numbers should be very close.

As far as I know, yes - auto cars have a higher drive train loss. I think the number tossed about for LS1 based drive trains is 20%. |

I take it there is no similar calculation (i.e. drivetrain loss percentage when measuring 'at the wheels' on a dyno) for torque, as it is a different kind of force than power? :? Trans "I never claimed to be an engineer" Am2001 :lol: |
Actually the dyno calculates the torque required to either turn a known weighted drum to a certain speed or rotate the drum against a given brake force (in my layman's vernacular) and this torque figure is then used to calculate the hp figure.

Weight won't really be an issue at all.
Don't forget to add in the losses from the actual rolling road too. Losses will vary from car to car and its configuration, but as RC45 said, it will be somewhere in the 15-25% range.... Rolling roads are far less acurate than rolling roads, although the latest digital hub dynos, that cost about £40,000 per wheel are getting fairly accurate. |
wow finally a thread where I have more experience using the given equipment than the others...
According to the guys at Mustang no 2 "identical" cars will ever have the exact same hp, because there are soo many factors involved from how the car was broken in etc the most minute details can determine the differences. now maybe if you had some way of getting the cars exactly the same in every single little detail it could be possible. And traction shouldn't be an issue on a dyno when trying to measure 400hp now we did have an 850ft/lb pickup spin the tires but it had absolutley no weight on the rear. but weight shouldn't affect the hp output of a vehicle at the wheels. The biggest and most important factor is getting all the settings correct in the computer they need everything from temp to barometric pressure elevation all that needs to be imput into the computer for a truely correct reading that is how some companies can get a guaranteed hp everytime they just fudge a few factors and bam. |

very true if you run the car one day then come back the next it could be off by 5hp more or less.

In the realm of performance tuning, "the dyno pull" is nto to determine actul output, but rather provide a way to evaluate the results of changes made.
By observing the delta youknow wether you are on the right track or not. As with any "measuremnet" taken against a complex system - there are obviously many variables able to impact absolute numbers, but you can bank on the changes in output being a good measure of success. This is true whether dynoing a car or bike, or benchmarking a PC, or measuring top speed or 1/4 mile drag race times. And yes - even Nurburgring lap times ;) -- Consistant dupliaction of results or measurable changes are what import :P :) |
yeah we did a 1/4 mile pull on a Bonneville everything properly input in the comp and it only ran a 17.8 on 5 of 6 cylinders
