What would be the smallest engine that you'd boost?

Hi I was just wondering about that one. I've heard a few people saing that messing with engines smaller that 2.0 litres is a waste of time!
What do you guys think. And what will be the first things that you'd do?

You won't just start by putting a turbo or supercharger, right? :D

evoWalo 05-09-2005 06:26 AM

I live in a country with a lot of those cars and in my point of view it is a waste of time. Then again those who mod sub-2.0L cars are cheap.

SilenCe 05-09-2005 06:27 AM

I've a 1.6 litres engine in my car, and it is really lame! But i think a 1.9 litre engine is still enough for beginning driving.

thepest 05-09-2005 06:48 AM

Wow You know what you're talking about! Damn you learned your lesson :)

Thanks a lot! Some great ideas, I'll have them all in mind!

BTW how much would all this stuff cost! Don't be too exact :)

numerouno 05-09-2005 06:49 AM

VW's 1.8T would be good enough if properly tuned IMO

5vz-fe 05-09-2005 06:52 AM

Hey Brembo, don't forget ur intercooler, u don't want heatsoak to spoil your fun.

ZfrkS62 05-09-2005 08:00 AM

i've actually toyed with the idea of sticking a turbo on a 9hp Honda go-kart motor :D

mindgam3 05-09-2005 08:27 AM

1.3litre hayabusa turbocharged - around 400hp, cant see much wrong with that if put in say a Caterham or mini :P

TransAm 05-09-2005 09:18 AM

There are countless sub-2.0 forced induction motors, specially some of the JDM 600cc stuff like the Suzuki Cappa, cappu, fuckit coffee.

Anyone who's driven a Renault 5 Turbo and then a 1.4TL back to back would probably disagree it's a waste of time to turbo sub 2.0 motors.

I think it should be positively encouraged!

espen 05-09-2005 10:23 AM

Try a turbocharged Arctic Cat RX... 1.0 litre 230hp, these things rock 8)

Nothing like 150kph in powder on an untouched mountain lake!

cateye 05-09-2005 12:51 PM

me totally n00b in cars. in my country ppl mod ther honda civic which is 1.6 litres .. n dont knwo what they put in them trubo .. nos ... bla bla ...

TeflonTron 05-09-2005 02:02 PM

Hmm. Well, a Daihatsu Charade GT-ti was the match of a Golf GTI back in the day, and that has a 900CC engine, with an intercooler turbo, twin Cams, fuel-injected and 12 valve engine! 99BHP was good enough for 0-60 in 8.0 seconds!

JiggaStyles09 05-09-2005 02:06 PM

i think brembo hit it on the head. if the work needed to proporly add forced induction to a car is done and done correctly (i.e. built bottom end, good flow of intake and exhaust, dyno tuned, etc.) a small displacement engine is not a waste of time at all, and can be a lot of fun in the right car.

a good rule of thumb is that most people want 3 things out of their cars cheap, fast, and reliable. however you can only have 2 out of the three. forget where i heard that, it may have even been from JW. :D

just putting a turbo/supercharger on a car without going through the proper steps while it can be cheap, you will either be running on borrowed time or running so conservatively that you are wasting a lot of potential of forced induction.

5vz-fe 05-09-2005 02:08 PM

Daihatsu Charade weights in @ 810 kg while golf GTi back in the 90s is around 500kg more.

T-Bird 05-09-2005 02:23 PM

I just look at the GTI and Audi's with 1.8T's they are fast little cars and can be very fast with some work put into them. hell I would turbo a 600cc engine.

More relevent is the quality of design and strength of an engine rather than the actual capacity.
As mingdam said, 1.3 hayabusa, and any bike engine for that matter are an example that displacement is not always the way to go (if weight is an issue).
Our Formula Student car this year features a turbocharged 600cc yamaha thundercat engine. :)

1 and 2 agree completely

3 - Tell us more about it in a new post dude!

Since everything has been said, you could always make a 1.8 into a 2.0L Stroker and then you have potential galore. Block design, as said above, is a huge factor and since the 1.8t has a iron block it's not exactly easy to damage, but since it is a 1.8 it'll take longer to spool compared to a 2.0. Thats why the FSi has great low down torque since they gave it better displacement. Getting lighter parts into the engine will also make any engine better. But if you have a 1.8 in your car then your car is probably on light side, so each horsepower makes the difference compared to every 10hp makes a difference in a muscle car. The MKIV GTi is not light :( a cool 2900lbs. Anything and everything has potential if you have knowledge and money, i've seen a 10 second Geo Storm so that should give anyone hope...

my neighbor has a 2004 vw gti 1.8t. after a neuspeed chip and exhaust, its making about 260hp and the chip and exhaust cost about 400 american each

T-Bird 05-09-2005 09:31 PM

My buddy has a custom computer program, exhaust, and intake from a local VW/Audi shop and cam and gears (not sure who from) for his 2.0 and he is making atleast 200hp from a 2.0 Golf 4door and it hauls ass.
here's a few vids of it before the cam and gears.

He's deffinately not making 260hp. Maybe 215hp at the crank especially since it's a crappy neuspeed chip, but his torque should be around 240-245. But i really need to hear more about those 2.0L T-Bird, they get underestimated....
