Wish me luck! I'm gonna need it.

saadie 04-24-2005 10:54 AM

good luck dude .... i heard tht thers a better version of linux commin up .... i'll ask my classmate later ... dont get fucked up  ... BTW y dont yea install it on another partition ?

garybb 04-24-2005 10:55 AM

ahahahaaaa

have fun with that as a desktop OS when it wont run any programs you will need/want to use

BTW why not use centos instead, its much better to not have to update the whole O/S every few months when they release a new version

Pimp Racer 04-24-2005 10:55 AM

Because I only got 1 HDD. Plus I dont want windows any more at all. Just too much bull shit. I need to find out all the shit I need to backup such as personal shit of my dads business shit and so on. If I fuck it up I am so screwed!

*EDIT*

What do you mean wont run programs when I need/want to use? The dude I talked to about it runs it and hasnt had any problems. Plus is this centos less heavy on the system? IF so then I gotta look into it.

saadie 04-24-2005 10:58 AM

hmm alryt .. wel good luck :)

exactly that.. no programs designed for windows will run on it , sure there are some alternative nix programs for internet, media file playback, word processing etc, but how will you do schoolwork etc on it

basically your looking at a whole lot of trouble IMO.. if you think you can handle editing the config of everything in text files , and can find alternative programs that work well and can do all the shit you do in windows then go for it...

I'm just saying I use windows and a couple of linux variants, and no way would I go to linux for my only system ;)

Ah I see what you mean now. But speaking of schoolwork what do you mean? Usually the only time I need the computer for school work is 5 page essays and researching shit. Basicilly why I am using Linux is because I want to use programs that take up less resources. :D

So the only thing I use this computer for is typing up essays, researching shit, car stuff, and thats about it? My family use it for the same thing basicilly. Oh I also want to know is there a program such as this for Linux?
http://www.solidworks.com/pages/prod...eDrawings.html

Ok so now that I told you what I am gonna do with the computer you think I should still go for it or should I stay with windows?

mindgam3 04-24-2005 11:51 AM

I find if you keep you're computer in good condition then windows will give you next to no problems.... so much easier to use than any linux based system, they're just too much hassle

DeMoN 04-24-2005 12:34 PM

I agree about keeping windows well = no trouble. If you have so much spyware and crap like that, then yes u will have problems...

If you go to Linux you will have a lot of issues too. I tried out Red Hat (which now is fedoa) and god damn I was pieced. You have to use a Command Propt (Terminal) to do everything.

I give you 2 weeks, if that, to get pieced about it.

When your Family tries to use it, O MY you will get into trouble lol! Unless they know as much or more about computers than you do.

I guarantee that if all you use ur comp for is car stuff and essays, then formating and reinstalling windows and ONLY installing microsoft word, using FireFox as browser and updating windows (plus using spybot search and destroy) will leave your comp fast. Maybe also use a light Antivirus such as Symantec Norton CORP not not not 2005 but Corp 9

Pimp Racer 04-24-2005 12:41 PM

Well the shit I install is not the problem its just when parents get on they have now clue what they install. Such as when they have those damn pop up ads when the use netscape about you computer is under a virus attack. They clikc on those things becuase they have no clue its a virus. :( So no matter what I tell them to do they always mange to fuck things up! Last time I reformatted this computer in 2 FUCKING DAYS! I REPEAT 2 FUCKING DAYS I started getting fucking errors!

Anyones the the I was talking about woke up rite now so I need to talk to him about last minute shit and I am off to install it. :D

See you guys later on today I hope! Its been good knowing yall!

DeMoN 04-24-2005 02:55 PM

that is why you should use:

Antivirus (Norton Corp 9 or AVG free)
Antispyware (Spybot, Ad-Aware, Antispyware)
Firefox (blocks popups VERY good. I might get 1 every month without exagerating)
HOSTS file (loook for HOSTS download under google, I think this has a LOT to do with me getting popups 1nce a month)

RC45 04-24-2005 03:32 PM

LOL - another fool is sucked to the Crynux side... ;)

As Dan points out - you may find the variety of software a little small ---- and don't complain when you have all 3 of the games Linux supports installed... :P ;)

ARMAN 04-24-2005 03:51 PM

As a buddy of mine who build PC's on a daily basis said - install XP and all the service packs, and if you want Linux and Co. you can have it but if you like programming... :?
I chose XP Pro and it works fine. Clean reinstall and dont run proggys that mess up everything in your computer. For ex. using hijackthis or what its name without knowing what you are doing can do some harm to the system imo. ...and stop surfing thru porn sites

Pimp Racer 04-24-2005 04:57 PM

Got everything installed so you guys are gonna see my ass around here. :D I am rite now having fun with exploring this new shit! Its awesome!

DeMoN 04-25-2005 09:29 AM

It just gets crappy to you sometimes. Not to everyone, mostly people who cant be bothered protecting themselves with other softwares. I, myself, have few issues against XP. I just hate how it gets slow after a while... I mean fresh install it loads up so fast... then it becomes heavy for no apparent reason. Other than that, I like it.

I give Pimp Racer 2 to 3 weeks before he wants to kill himself.

If I were him, I'd have a Dual Boot and passwd protect the Windows one and have my family use Linux. If he claims that HE doesnt mess windows up, then this would be a great solution.

all i ever read or hear is how people hate windows and have tons of problems, yet i dont really have any issues what so ever. there are 7 pc's in my house all running xp, and have yet to have any problems.
my 2 laptops and my desktop which i put together run flawlessly.

Well when I install something I need such as a free trial to view certain files those come with spyware and all this other shit. I try to go to control panel and the remove software or something and it wont uninstall that way so I have the program on my HDD forever unless I delete it but there is still some "aftermath" left from the programs. BTW I have 98 so....its kinda worse compared to XP I bet???

I used to have the virus protection and shit before and update it when I was supposed to and shit about 1 year ago and then just quit because the virus protection shit really didnt do anything for me? It kept giving me random errors and shit. It was Norton I believe?

Oh and speaking of dual boot I got a 11 or 12 gig HDD and I dont think I can run dual boot. It would take up too much of my space. I can just go out and buy a 250 gig HDD or something but I really dont see why I would want to keep 250 gig of space. I usually burn them to a Data CD or DVD. :D

*EDIT*

2 - 3 weeks? Your on biatch!
