$6000, 18 years old, needs to be insurable, What Car?
 

Please can you give me some advice on what car to get with $6000, it has to be a maximum of a 1.6 petrol or 2 litre diesel.

Are we talking USA here?

Not knowing what the insurance market is like in your country and how premiums are calculated it is difficult to advise what is going to be insurable.

Generally avoid anything that is popular with 'boy racers' in your country. I would imagine SEAT hatchbacks are probably popular with 'boy racers' in your country, much like Ford Escorts/Vauxhall Corsa are in the UK.

Honda Civics cost more to insure than 3.0i BMWs here in Texas for that reason.

Assuming Hondas are not seen as high risk, maybe a 98 Civic VTi - you might find that the 5-door 1.8VTi is cheaper to insure than the 3-door 1.6VTi. You'll have a lot of fun with a VTEC.

Saab 900 or 93 2.0 HOT can be tuned using an OBD plug in device and you will gain 20% HP and Torque on top of the 205hp it already puts out! If you need to (i.e. the insurance company inspects your car after an accident), you can plug the device back in and tune the car back to 'stock' in 20 minutes. You might struggle to find a Saab for 6k though, but if Saabs arent popular in Spain then it is possible.

When buying used look for an older owner, and a car in mint condition with Full Service History, whatever you buy. That's my golden rule and it hasn't failed me yet (touch wood).

I do not mind how old the car is.

A Saab sounds a great idea. As I hardly ever see them driving around it probably is quite cheap second hand, and as I have never seen a "boy racer" in one I am sure it will be quite easy to ensure. 8)

A Golf TDI would be a pretty good choice.

There are tons of options. Alfa 145, mk3 Golf, Peugeot 306, Renault Clio, Honda Civic.....

mk3 Golf is well built and reliable so that would be my choice. Not a hoot to drive, though...

The price for the device is about $900 for the 9-3, but the same device for the 1993-1998 SAAB900 is only $500. If you want to read more about it, click the link in my sig, the page will load in Swedish but click the British flag and it will translate to English.

While the engine is tuned up, the software program is still within the limits of safety for the engine....

Get a focus 2.0.

Just as an idea you can go to an car-search site like autoscout, autotrader etc.
And just select that the car you are searching can't be more expensive than €6000,-
Maybe than you can get a good idea what's for sale in your country at that price and all your other criteria :D
