Btw, Dan or TT or Jabba, is it possible to make somehow JW be a privat host permanently with JW as password? Cause for example I cannot get there when in specific time? So anytime anyone from JW when they have a minute(read hours :D ) will be able to race any time of day/night? I dont know if it eat some bandwith or so.. :? Thats would be nice :P

EDIT: Tom, I cannot see it there... :( well it might be late already :?

Ziploc 04-11-2005 06:00 PM

Any recent news on LFS? maybe if we advertise in the GENERAL section or front page we can organize a little league! its easy for anyone to join seeing as its free and supports many control types

ARMAN 04-11-2005 06:51 PM

Havnt seen anything giong on in LFS so just racing in any hosted game I can find suitable for me :?

Not a chance man. I've tried it for a couple of years, never worked.

Ziploc 04-11-2005 07:13 PM

grrr

this is the easiest game for EVERYONE to get into!

Daggernite 04-11-2005 08:45 PM

im up for a race if theres another one going to happen. A PM would be great if there is gonna be another one, since I'm crap at keeping track of things.

SilviaEvo 04-11-2005 09:00 PM

damn i dont have a wheel :? i've played it before but it sucks without a wheel

topgeartom 04-12-2005 02:17 AM

yeah, it does really help if you have a wheel. I might be able to set up a server this weekend, as im snowed under with work all this week. I'll let you all know nearer the time

ARMAN 04-12-2005 07:14 AM

Tom, is it possible to make it somehow permanent as I said few posts above? I dont understand this stuff really :?
I'd race but I cannot be at specific time :|

@SilviaEvo - play with mouse its great after a bit of training

|Nuno| 04-12-2005 09:04 AM

Well, I'm on the same boat as Daggernite:

If a race takes place, I'm in but yeah, a PM would be nice.

Ziploc 04-12-2005 11:07 AM

btw how are you all enjoying lfs?

Just got back from a small practise session, and I have to say that it's fantastic. Puts to shame many of the so called "Top end car games".

By the way, I have a few questions for you guys:

For the people who are using wheels, what settings are you using?
(I have the black Momo wheel and I'm not happy with the current settings)

What's your best lap on the XF GT Turbo at Blackwood?

Maybe a stupid question, but how do I see the tyre temperatures?

And lastly, is anyone up for an online race? :P

Thanks in advance. :D

Thanks man! Now I'm off for some fun.

Daggernite 04-12-2005 12:45 PM

Really is a great sim. I think the fact that your sat in a car, you get the feeling that your in something and not just seeing through a camra bolted on the front of the car like GT4. Simulation wise its very go too. I love it actually. I even like crashing and watching the replay

If anyone wants a race partner, just pm me or msn me. I noticed alot of the online games, people dont take it that serious and crash on purpose, so a proper race would be nice. I'm looking forwards to Toms weekend race actually. My fastest lap is 1:45 but I'm guessing thats slow because I was spectating online and a guy got 1:37.

topgeartom 04-12-2005 03:59 PM

I'm no Schumacher, havent ever recorded my time, so im not sure what the best lap ive done is.

*Unfortuenatelty, the online game may have to take place on Sunday as i am going to my birthplace (and the hometown of TransAm) for a day out and a meal as its my dads birthday today.

As i said before, ill let you knwo nearer the time when it will be on,a nd drop those who have asked a PM.

theres a wheel turn compensation in the MISC menu you might wanna fiddle with. i have a black momo with linear settings and i love it.

Full version (S2alpha) will be out 24th June.

No offence but 1.46 is really slow... that's with GTI at Blackwood, right? You need some practise :)

Honestly... is this LFS really that good?

I tried LFS1 and it has such a "fake" over-simulated feel to it. If tyres in real life had as little grip and cars were as unpredictably under-steering in the real world, the freewyas would have piles of econo-boxes at the end of every off ramp.

The net result was you end up having to learn the nuances of "playing the controller" rather than driving the car - plus the entire install was not as plug-n-play as it could have been.

S - is LFS2 an improvement - or have y'all just mastered the interface better than I could... :P

The best! S1 was good but S2 is better in every way.

what the man says :P

The cars are shockingly realistic. you have the spritely little GTI, that like any small, high powerd front wheel drive car, will plough straight on in corners if you dont ease off a bit. As for the rear wheel drive GT's you jsut have to learn to control the car. If you have a decent wheel, pedals and clutch set up then sure it takes practice, but with time you can really learn to controll it, and before you know it, you will be slipping it into corners at 60mph in 3rd with the back end sat neatly out of line. Modulating the throttle and clutch a little to keep it all tidy and you can have a howl.

Just spend a bit of time learning how the cars work and youll find that it is one of the best, if not THE best racing simulator of all time.

I dont think youll ever be able to poperly recreate the exact physics of driving just yet. give it another 10 years or so, and well be well on the way, but for now, LFS does the job more than adequately - not only is it accurate, and immensly rewarding if you spend the time, it can also be instantly fun with just a keyboard and a few minutes to spare.

Apologies for the essay :P

RC45 06-17-2005 11:20 AM

^^^ in other words it is still about mastering the PC input device rather than the vehicle? ;) :P

Because I can tell you, when throwing my parents FWD cars around on "unauthorized mid-night jaunts" you can get a surprising amount of grip from even street tyres - albeit a lot of squealing and body roll and skidding - but you actually do get round the bend eventually :)

"Games" seem to have you just shoot off into the runoff like a rubber band.. ;)

ARMAN 06-17-2005 11:28 AM

I play mostly online on the car park, just fooling around  Cause on the normal track I am the last most of the time :(

ANyway why are you talking about "physics" and "simulation" you an expert now? :D

But HOW  Its the best sim on the planet you know

But you are talking the truth, I can get a surprising amount of grip from a chevy venture van on highway off/on ramps, lots of tire sqeal but plenty of grip too.

Blip 06-17-2005 04:55 PM

I've had major problems with controlling the cars even in a straight line.
When i use keyboard, the car's wheels can be turned in variable amounts.

But with a game controller, turning left or right locks the wheels completely. Somehow this makes driving much easier, as the car is more responsive.

The best way to see if a game is not really a simulation is to see if small children can play it well. Any children here to prove my theory :P

Sure there is. LFS is a solid ONLINE DRIVING SIMULATOR, thats about it. Physics are good but far from top stuff, cars are fictional, tracks are fictional, graphics are far from special...its just a different type of sim :) Its something you go to fix when you dont want to race AI, but I really dont see my self lapping in LFS offline, it just doesnt have anything going for it in the offline mode.

saadie 06-17-2005 11:09 PM

is there anything better ....
really ..... i really cant think of anyhting better ....
LFS is a driving simulator and its works pritty good imo .....
its fun .... and thats what matters more then it being worse then any other game ..

RC45 06-18-2005 12:59 AM

^^ GTR is great fun offline for me... haven't bothered with the online.

GT4 is really fun - if only because the Logitech DFP adds a lot.

Come to think of it, every thing I tried with the DFP has felt "funner".

LFS1 left me with a bad taste - it was almost as if the it was too simulated... and that is what lost some of the fun for me - because when I tried to anticipate what the car would do, I found myslef not having mastered the nuances of the controller in their engine yet - that's all.

And with so many sims and driving games out there - you can't really run em all - maybe one day... ;)
