The long term magazine test EVO 8 didn't hold up very well after 40,000 hard charging miles - as they wring more power out of the same motor, they seem to be making it weaker and weaker.
And Mistu is already notorious for not honouring warranty work - makes one apprehensive to buy one. |
It's a turbo that's why it wouldnt last that long on miles of hard charging drives.
Back to the bumper: They had to retain the VIII bumper to comply with US road safety laws. The new JDM bumper couldnt accomodate the crash bar. |
It could have finally got some more significant power bump and neither the styling has changed much hence it doesn't really excite me. :|

I just love Evo's so news on the new upcoming one is great. I think it looks "ok" I think its gone under the least amount of change from what they usually go through with new models. Still I think I'd rather have a STI, and out of the Evo's I'd have a 7. Dunno why but there you go.
|
What's up with the masturbate & penis on this thread?
RC45: The reviewer probably doesnt know how to take care of an Evo. It also could be that his bad experience is a fluke. I know of only one car in the same category as the Evo and that's the STi. If the damage done to the car is caused by abuse on the part of the driver then I dont see why Mitsu shouldnt honor the warranty. Darn April Fools... |

Then the cost of owning, managing and repairing it is observed over the term of the test. There are a number of cars in the $35,000 range that seat 4 people and go like a bat out of hell. All I am getting at is that as a second or third car, or a college kids run about these hot sedans are ok - but when subjected to real mileage and use over extended distance they tend to not have a good reputaiton other than at the autox and track days. And more so Mistu and Subaru have been denying warranties left and right when they do fail. Sure it's a nice hot car - but for the price and performance it is rather weak. And this is even true for non-MR detuned versions. Again, nice car - not starting a fight - I just wish they werer more robust and reliable. |
R&T has a rather favorable long term report on the '03 Evo (exact same model I have). The writer did acknowledge the horror stories reported by other owners similar to what car magazine experienced in their long term test.
In contrast, R&T's 50,000 mile test they only experienced minor problems. Pls name cars other than the STi that have four doors, can sit 4-5, a big trunk and similar to the Evo for under $31,000. As long as the Evo is more reliable than a Mercedes-Benz am happy. :) |
Anyone find last 2 EVO's amysingly boring? I mean design? The nicest was imo EVO VI.
And making 3rd EVO same as 2 previous  |
I think the body types are similar in every 3 generation of Evos. The IX would probably be the last one similar to the VII & VIII. Evo IV-VI shared similar body as well. Same goes with I-III.
This is my personal bias but I hate the idea that an econobox Lancer with a simple body kit would duplicate the look of an Evo. I know the Evo is a souped up econobox but come on! Sure they'll have to dump lotsa money to work on improving the performance and the crashworthiness of the body but having a ratty & smelly taxi cab easily look like an old Evo sucks. Now though the last 3 generations makes it harder and more expensive to have the look. That was a reason why I was thinking of getting an STi. |

Bah just another arm chair opinion based on another's opinion. Its obvious you dislike "Jap" vehicles, thats fine but back it up some real experinces in future please. Its obvious your pretty ignorant of these class of vehicles, weak preformance, WTF are you talking about anyway when you admit the following?! Quote:

[sarcasm]I can vouch for how wonderful F_ord is. I so love my old F_ord E_scape.[/sarcasm] It consumes so much gas and has dismal power. Makes a 5 year old CR-V look like a pocket rocket.

If am going by owner opinion and comments posted. If they are lying then so be it, but from I have heard speakign to owners at meets Mistu and Subaru will deny warranty repair if they even suspect you have had the car at a track day - yet in the US provide an SCCA membership as part of the ownership package. Perhaps I have been dupped by over-zealous lying scubi owners.. but I doubt it... ;) http://www.deniedmywarranty.org/main.html http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/arch.../t-572591.html http://www.grmotorsports.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=4176 |
I'm no expert on the reliability issue so I won't give any comment about that.
But I must say those EVO's are starting to bore me. Yes it's nice that they are this technologically advanced an all, but common it's time to dump a couple technicians and hire an Italian car designer in stead!!! I don't notice much difference between the EVO 8 & 9. Plz enlighten me what I've missed. There are now 2 round thingies next to the radiator grill & the grill on the bonnet isn't split into 2 parts any more... anything else??? |

I have the same opinion.
This car is a really good car, with a lot of technology, and really fun to drive, but the design is everything but agressive. It looks like a normal Lancer tuned with bad materials. Maybe because of that, here in Portugal, I see a lot of Impreza's STi compared to Evo's. I think I've only seen two Evo 8. If I wanted to bought one of those cars I probably would chose the STi. I know that the Scooby isn't as fast as the Evo but it looks much better, and that's really important. |

Yeah I remeber reading the warrenty carefully and yeah racing voids the warrenty. As does buying the car from auctions, which I did but I didn't tell them ;) There where one or two small warrenty items they found and fixed it no problem and no charge. Here it isn't faults with cars but about disclosure, simply don't tell them you go to the track!!! And don't write your VIN on entry forms!!! I think with every other car manufacture, if you said you raced your car, the warrenty will be void, I know it's with the Manro (GTO) here too. >http://www.deniedmywarranty.org/stats.html for 15 years of Subaru's only, and include the Forester, Impreza, Legacy, and Outback model lines. those break bown stats are impressive. The worst being # Other Powertrain Items # Bad wheel bearing (27) If you buy a Subaru, its been noted that the wheels need balence and aligment after you buy it, it probally explains the "crappy" bearings. >http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/arch.../t-572591.html Once again about disclosure, simply don't tell them you go to the track!!! >http://www.grmotorsports.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=4176 Now this is intresting, lesson is don't be honest to car salesmen!! Its sucks though, poor guys seems nice and he gets this. Quote:

From the exterior, its not much different from the 8, the difference the same as you stated above...but from what I found, the JDM evo 9 will have more sexy rear compared to this USDM, and for the USDM the BBS rims comes standard with the car, but the JDM still using the enkei... -the JDM: http://img30.exs.cx/img30/5692/exterior01i017wo.th.jpg http://img30.exs.cx/img30/7027/exterior01i025ts.th.jpg http://img30.exs.cx/img30/8936/exterior03i03r2yy.th.jpg http://img124.exs.cx/img124/5276/int...i03r8za.th.jpg http://img124.exs.cx/img124/1525/lineup01i02b1qq.jpg -the USDM: http://img30.exs.cx/img30/1048/lance...ter34qt.th.jpg http://img124.exs.cx/img124/6527/lan...06128ma.th.jpg about that mitsu warranty, thats really sucks...IMO this car is a road version of rally car, then this car is a racing car. so why you couldn't take your racing car for a little racing? thats absurd...I think mitsu dealership should think again about this warranty.. |

Scroll up to my second post on this thread for subtle differences. Essentially the new IX is just a USDM VIII with a new bumper & vortex generators. When Jap or Euro cars get to the US they tend to "soften" it a bit to get it to comply to US laws and body sizes. |

The latest of which was a broken seat. The Evo 8 Recaros have a plastic back, it broke. Mitsu called it a wear and tear item and denied replacement. $1700 to replace it!!!! Evo's are blowing transfer cases left and right, many times Mitsu has called it abuse and denied claims. Even though it's known that many Evo's came from the factory improperly shimmed. All the more reason to get an MR with the LSD. They are just as bad when a car is modded. They seem to think the Moss Magnuson ACT doesn't apply to them. For those that didn't know, the Moss Magusun ACT says that warranty work can't be denied if the mod wasn't what caused the problem. Mitsubishi's CEO in Japan was arrested not too long ago for covering up reliability reports and denying warranties. I'm still interested in an Evo, but I would not buy one new, since the warranty is useless. I'd get a used one with low mileage. All this from a company that claims to have the best backed cars in the world. As for the Evo IX, I like it. I'd buy a brand new one, if I didn't care about money. |

If looks could kill...... what a beast. Just when you think theres not much more they can do each new model just excells!

RC45: Do you have the Car magazine long term review on hand? Could ya kindly scan it? I'm curious on the long term test details of the UKDM VIII.
|
I'd rather drive a qudi quattro than a car which is driven by a computer and the driver having 2 rely on the computer to sort out his mistakes

I always thought that EVo's were extremely reliable cars, but just today at a local garage when we had taken our car in to have a nail removed from the tyre, an evo 8 pulled up with a very curious rattling sound coming from the off side wheel
