Roomie got an email
 

My roommate just got an email about using a sharing file from our University. They got his IP address and everything. The thing is that i dled more then he does but he got caught. I feel real bad. Should he do anything to try to avoid this mess?

See what happens, still no need to download things you can buy for few bucks anywere or borrow from buddys to see if its any good, doesnt metter if games or CD's :wink: My opinion.

Our RIAA contacted the university requesting his information which in turn emailed my roommate to determine the best course of action. So what should he do now?

Give it time.. From what Ive been hearing the only people fined are those who agree to settlement.. they cant sue everyone.

Thats what it looks liek he is going to do. I told him to change his computer with another one and send an email back saying that the IP address giving to him isn't his and prove it by having them come over and showing the new IP address on his new computer. Thats what i think he should od. But Ill tell him to just wait it out now.

Wont work.. The rooms in your dorm should have static ips.. any computer hooked to the jack in that room will have the same ip.

he should throw out his harddrive/s and buy new ones.. hence permanently 'loosing' any incriminating files :P

even writing zeros to the drive isnt enough these days ;)

first... the RIAA has no right to know who is affiliated with what IP addy.
i suggest you get a copy of the service contract for the broadband access to the university's ISP to know your rights... as its up to them if they hand over the info, or refuse to give a students info up... hopefully your roommate is a good academically sound student.

also, an Email is hardly official... and i gues its just a 'dont let us see anything else coming to us about copyright infringement via downloads' slap on the wrist

wait it out, back up the data, and dont keep it in the dorm room, delete all the illegal songs you have, and re-format the hard drive (if you suspect it comes that far ;) ) and if it does, then reformatting it once wont do it, but fillling it with useless data, then reformatting again ought to do the trick to confuse the computer forensisists.

ok thanks guys. Ill telll him. Also, since we use the same jack, does that mean that my IP is the same as his? Is there anyway that i can get into trouble even though they didn't say anything to me? I just want to take precautions just in case...

Keep us updated on what happens. The thing is, you shouldnt download movies/games as soon as they are out as more people will be on the file. Just wait till they are not as popular and download then.

Ok...thanks guys. He has his mind set on getting a new computer. Apparently, in our school newspaper, 10 other people on the campus are experiencing the same thing. I wanna say that they are "making an example" out of the 10 people including my roommate. I will keep you guys informed in what happens. I wanna say nothing more then just a slap on the wrist is what is going to happen....but you never know. Ill keep low for awhile. I deleted my sharing file and Im just going not dled anything for the rest of the year. Ill be ok, its my roomie who has problems.

Tell your roommate to switch the cable to the other data jack. Let the other guy deal with the RIAA.

If you are in a Dorm room, there is no way you can go about faking its not you. I remember here at my school, your ip was set, but not only that, your complete host name said which building you were and wat room,

something like rm202eXxx room 202 building e xxxx

Even if he buys another computer, rm202e will still be the same. Now if he had plugged his comp on another person's room, then the other person would have been held responsible. As things are now, he cant do anything.

For example, go to www.samspade.org and put your IP where it says IP WHOIS and see what comes up. First line will show your IP and your HOST name, your HOST name will include your room number or any other sort of identification to your exact location.

The case becomes even worse if your college does like my college. They make you register your MAC address... then, you cant even hide what you are doing even if you go to the library or a friends room.

You could try a few tricks some static ip addys arent static at all they only appear that way, and are assigned by a local routing device. Try releasing your ipaddress and renewing you may get lucky. When i lived in tampa i have experienced this several times with the same service carrier, granted thats different from a college campus but you never know where someone may have made a mistake in that network or gotten sloppy. Id also suggest putting a wireless router on the link. Preferably one using some kind of NAT (should be any of the common ones available if im not mistaken)your new addy on that pc should come up as an rfc 1918 class c addy like 192.168.1.3. If you showed this network to be open they couldnt prove you were 100% responsable. The yagi antenna i have on my pc can hit signals over a mile a way so there are a few loop holes there. good luck
