MSN transfer help
I am trying to transfer a video with dingo22 on MSN and we both have broadband (512K and 1MB) but all our transfers seem to be extremely slow. They start off fairly quickly but soon slow down to and end up being worse then when we were on 56K.
Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this and how to fix it? Thanks in advance |
you retard, can't you fix a small problem like this? :P
Seriously, PLEASE HELP US!!! :? |
well .... as far as i know ... msn is very very slow ....
if the vid is arround 50 ... you can make a sub dom .. upload it there .. and you can dl it from there ..... simple .. but stupid ... |
yeah but not this slow.....and the vid is more then 50MB (about 175MB)
|
ohh ... kewl .... whats in the vid ??
well i guess u'll hvae to contact someone whose got lotsa web space like demon .. or yea can request the admins to put it on jw(if its all that important) .... or zip it into lil 5-15 mb packs .. like marrtin brundle supercars or burning rubber .. i think its tht slow because of the size of the vid .... 175 mb damn ... or start DLing it and i'll be done by tomorro morning ... |
Its just a basketball video.....its not just for this vid though, we just would like to know a solution because this happens on ANY video we try to share
I don't want to ask someone to host a video just so I can d/l it everytime we want to share something :( |
oh oh ... another thing just popped into ma mind ...
both of yea got broadband right ..... why dont yea guys setup IIS ...... means .. host a site on yer own computer and just share the damn folder thts got all the vids in it .... |
um sorry for the hijack, but is everyone elses msn working... for me trillian signs in for like 20 secs then i get disconnected :?
|
Got the same transfer problems, but it depends on the person I'm sending this file to :?
Sometimes it works great, quite fast, and sometimes it begins fast and becomes VERY slow 1 minute after the beginning  I tried to configure my router but couldn't find the appropriate ports to open (can that be a NAT problem ? Still a noob, sorry) |
Very slow I confirm, although I use Trillian.
my suggestion if both of you guys download and install AIM.. still works well for me. |
ah well im behind a router.......but i have sent files to various JW members since gettin broadband.....and ive been able to transfer at full speed....then sumtimes it slows right down like this problem i have with dingo22.....
|
to avoid those problems, I prefer to send the file in rar archives to a mail account, or use yousendit.com
you spend a little more time, but it has faster download speeds |
Using Trillian here too.
If you regularly exchange files with others then you need something other than MSN. I think theres a free website that provides hosting for files but only for around 1 week then they delete them off the servers. Problem is i can't remember the name... |
^^ yousendit.com
but the hosting is only valid for a very limited number of downloads |
Trillian ... not a bad idea, I can't stand msn problems anymore (nicknames not showing etc ...) of course there will still be the shitty msn servers which bug every full moon

after i used router.. it was the same situation u described.... you need to open up port 6891-6900 for msn file transfer behind router... but is still kind of slow |
actuallly here is the email msn customer service send me
Based on your e-mail, you want to know the ports that MSN Messenger uses for File Transfer because you are experiencing slowness when transferring files. I know how important this service is to you. Let me help you resolve the issue. For file transfer, you must open ports 6891-6900. For example, port 6900 must be opened for both Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP) connections. In addition, here are other suggestions you can try to help you resolve your issue: 1. The bigger the file, the longer it takes to transfer. If you are transferring more than one file, wait first to finish the first file that you are transferring before transferring another file. 2. There is excessive Internet traffic and technical/connectivity issue with your Internet Service Provider (ISP). I suggest that you try using MSN Messenger during lower Internet traffic hours to see if issue persists. 3. Consult your Internet Service Provider for possible technical issues. You may ask your contact also to check with his/her ISP regarding this issue. 4. There are several running applications that are using up the system resources or bandwidth of your machine. I recommend that you: a. Close other programs and Web applications running. b. Close the conversation window, then sign out of MSN Messenger. Wait for several minutes, sign in and try to send files again. 5. Make sure you and your contact have at least 56 kilobits per second (kbps) of Internet connection speed to your Internet service provider (ISP). This is the connection speed, not the modem speed. If you or your contact have a lower connection speed, you may need a faster modem. 6. There are spyware/adware and other deceptive software that conduct certain activities on your computer without notifying you and getting your permission first. These activities may include displaying pop-up advertisements, changing Web browser settings, and collecting personal information. There are a variety of tools that can detect and remove unwanted software from your computer. Please go to: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx, to learn more about spy ware and download the detection and removal tools. 7. There are third-party add-in applications in your computer that causes the MSN Messenger application to suffer degraded performance and varying degrees of unstable operation. In order to experience the best performance with MSN Messenger, you should uninstall third-party MSN Messenger add-in applications you have installed. For instructions on how to uninstall the application, contact the third-party add-in vendor. 8. You have a third-party firewall application; it may be filtering out instant messages you are sending to your contacts. I recommend disabling or configuring it properly for instant messaging. Contact the firewall vendor for assistance on how to disable or configure the application. 9. The Antivirus option on the File Transfer settings is enabled. The program is scanning the files you send or receive, that cause the delay. I suggest that you disable this option on your MSN Messenger. To do this, please follow these steps: a. Start MSN Messenger. b. Go to the "Tools" menu, and click on "Options". c. Under the "Messages" tab, and under the "File Transfer" heading, disable the "Scan files for viruses using:" checkbox. d. Click OK. Chinweili, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. You are valuable at MSN and we look forward to providing you with consistent service. Your continuous support and feedback motivates us to assist you better. Please do not hesitate to write back if you have other questions regarding MSN Messenger. Well, I'm now using trillian, I guess the transfers are still slow but I'll try (once again) to configure the router |
thanks guys, were just trying to split up the file into parts now and transfer it that way and see if it helps.....will be back if not :)
|
Dingo, which ISP are you with? I am with IInet, and i have not had one successful msn transfer in the last 12 months. It must have something to with the router, and apparantly updating modem software. BTW i'm on 1500/256. Email me if you want to trials some things..

EDIT: which ports and how do I open them? :? |
Taken from MSN help page..
"For file transfer, you must open ports 6891-6900. For example, port 6900 must be opened for both Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP) connections. " Go into your toolbox setting in IInets page. Or, put this in your browser and look for port settings -----> 192.168.0.1 |

but the toolbox only allows me to block/open the following ports:
Port 25 (smtp), Port 80 (http) , Port 139 (netbeui/ipx) and Port 443 I think those ports are on the router, which I don't use :? |
