Whats your favourite software ?

This area of JW is becoming pretty deserted.
I've seen a post like this on another board and have found that it is a really good way for people to find out about usefull computer software which could make their PC use easier and more efficient... :D

So here we go.
* Post a list of your 5 favourite Windows programs + a small description + a linky if possible
* Try to include stuff that u think few people have heard off (DO NOT post MSN messenger please...)
*Any software no matter how small or simple can be included.

I'll get us started.

1) Babylon:

A dictionary tool for which you can add glossaries speciallized in certain areas and scientific fields. [babylon.com]

2) Crap Cleaner:

No-nonsense on-click hard drive cleaner. (i don't know where it frees up all that space from) [ccleaner.com]

3) FastFolder by BB:

Folder shortcuts for important directories in 1 tray icon program. Very usefull. [http://www.dogkennels.net/fastfolder/]

4) Timer Wizard:

Set an alarm to sound on your BIOS speaker so your desktop speakers don't need to be on.

5) RestBitz:

Reminds to take a break from the PC. Usefull if you get carried away and spend hours on JW non-stop. :D [littlehummingbird.com/]

6) Car-Buddy:

Keep track of maintainance schedules as well as other information on all your cars. [carbuddysoftware.com]

ye i posted six. could'nt skip car buddy :)

Favorite Software? Haha, I got a lot... let me see:

1. Winamp - Obvious, but I got a lot of music in a lot of different formats... so I need it.

2. 7-zip - Best compression/decompression software available. Compresses files into .7z format also, which has better compression than .rar.

3. Textpad - Replaces notepad and wordpad easily, with soooo many more options. Try it before you say I don't need it, like I did.... and I still havn't un-installed it.

4. Fireworks MX 2004 - I like it better than Photoshop CS mainly because it integrates so well with Dreamweaver and offers everything that Photoshop offers...

5. mIRC - Where else would I get the cracks neccesary to run Fireworks and Dreamweaver :D

6. Openoffice.org - I'm cheap, and it works well.

7. Firefox + Thunderbird - Obvious.

8. XMPlay - Small as hell, lightweight music player. Plays virtual every audio file and music stream(exception of real audio, of course) known to man, and weighs in around 290 kbs (can anyone say flashdrive :D ) !

9. nLite - Allows you to make a "lighter" version of Windows XP. Basically, it allows you to get rid of whatever you don't need, like extra languages, services, and what not from the Window's Install CD, and than make a new Bootable windows install cd without those things you removed. Dropped the final install size for my computer by 500 mbs...

10. CD N' Go - Now obsolette, but the best ripper for ogg/mp3/mp4/etc. files I know of. Also has a really great ID3(or equivalent) editor.

11. Gaim - Best replacement for AIM... gotta love tabs.

12. Bit Torrent(BitTornado to be exact) - Obvious :D

13. Resource Hacker - Allows you to change the way your programs look... It's hard to explain, you really need to fiddle around with it to understand what it's capable of. I managed to remove the start button on my desktop with it

14. WS_FTP server - my ftp server.

Hmm, I'm sure there are more... can't think of them off the top of my head though.

TweakUI - pretty well known

Diablo (1995) - every PC should have a copy!

I said GUI's are for wusses... I didn't say I wanted to be limited to 3 games, a web browser, and a freeware graphics program.. :P

Fleischmann 02-24-2005 04:19 PM

DC++, Virtual Dub, FTP Commander, Winamp 2.90, 3D Studiomax Paint ( ;) ) to name a few.

racer_f50 02-24-2005 05:37 PM

hmm....

1. Notepad. i use it constantly in game editing.
2. XAT.com Image Optimizer Pro. very good program for resizing/cropping/compressing images. lots of options for tweaking quality. loads very fast.
3. FlashFXP. my favorite ftp client i've used.
4. Firefox
5. Alias Maya 6.5. finally a version of Maya that doesn't hate my 9800pro.

guess i'll have to get around to checking that out finally. had heard of issues with it previously, so I just ignored its existance for a while.

styla21 02-25-2005 12:43 AM

I'm currently using a file-sharing program called 'Ares'. It is by far the best file-sharer i've ever used, for it doesn't contain junk, it's simple to use and gets results. I'd suggest checking it out :D

1: Finally! As I was reading this post I couldn't believe no-one has mentioned it!
There is just no tool that matches it.
ftp, sftp, email, reiserFS plugins. Directory synch, multi-rename, tabs, zip, tar, gzip, queued copies and a serious amount more. Its an absolute MUST for any programmer. 8). The first thing I install after windows itself.
http://www.ghisler.com

Start using it and you will realise how crap windows explorer really is.

2: VIM - THE editor. I hate IDE's as I do not know what they do when I am not looking. 8)
3: Daemon tools
4: Opera
5: Firefox (Not quite Opera yet, but on its way)
6: iTunes
7: VirtualDub
8: Psi Jabber client.
9: Putty
10: VNC

kazaam 02-25-2005 06:48 AM

here's the 5 I couldn't live without, in no particular order

opera
putty
dreamweaver
cuteftp pro
trillian

I use 7 zip too. The Ultra mode gives you scary compression levels, but uses too much memory.

For txt editors have you tried Meta Pad (http://liquidninja.com/metapad/) ?
