Close call on the road to Dallas - Nov 22

So I am on the road to Dallas this morning... and it is pissing with rain... ...the pictures tell the rest of the story.

This photo was taken at the beginning of the trip - showing the amount of rain being faced

100 miles later....

All I needed was a tow out of the mud - and was on my way again.

Farging Lucky for sure..

T-Bird 11-23-2004 12:53 AM

must have scared the shit out of you almost going into oncoming traffic like that. Glad to know you and the car are ok.

Hydroplane and a 400ft (about 4 seconds) fishtail that I lost the battle with... and spun across the muddy centre divide ... ending in the oncoming lane - I stopped with my ass in the oncoming lane, clutch in by the time I stopped so I didn't stall and managed to dash back onto the middle swamp to avoid the oncoming traffic.(

ABS and active handling had me stopped as soon as I hit the concrete of the other lane.

It was a very stimulating experience ;) - but you just gotta keep a calm head and hope your instincts kick in... :)

gigdy 11-23-2004 01:08 AM

Vansquish 11-23-2004 01:17 AM

Glad to see you're ok RC, (car too for that matter hehe).

ZfrkS62 11-23-2004 01:31 AM

good thing you know how to drive RC. I think JW would get a bit boring without you

but seriously, I'm glad you're ok.

SilviaEvo 11-23-2004 01:40 AM

whoa crap that is a whole shitload of rain! glad you and teh Vette are okay! btw your car is the only Vette i would have!

Minacious 11-23-2004 01:51 AM

I can see that being an underwear changing experience. Glad to see that the old Vette needed nothing more than a good bath.

sentra_dude 11-23-2004 02:04 AM

Good to hear you made it out ok RC.

Damn...the first time I was driving and things got really out of hand in the wet it scared the shiiit out of me! lol

666fast 11-23-2004 02:08 AM

Glad to hear you are ok and there wasn't any damage to the car! Close call for sure, someone in the opposite lanes in the wrong place and the wrong time could have changed that!

In a spin, both feet in!

DUNKiNUTS 11-23-2004 02:18 AM

i have had one like that but no where near as fast or in oncoming cars, lucky i say

dingo 11-23-2004 05:41 AM

Did taking photo's while driving cause (or contribute) this incident....if so I better stop. :P
Its good to see your OK mate....something similar happend to me once but it wasn't into oncoming traffic, just ended up backwards on the side of the road. :D

TT 11-23-2004 06:05 AM

Scary!! And you are lucky to have such wide grass/mud strips between the two ways in the US! Here we just have a nice metal or concret guardrail wich is not that Vette friendly :!:

Pooled water is a crap shoot when you traverse it - as witnessed by the number of other folks send either spinning or squirrelly by the pooled water on the trip yesterday :)

As it is 11 inch wide tryes, no matter what the tread depth or tread pattern will be more likely to hydroplane than skinny sedan tyres.. :)

nthfinity 11-23-2004 12:56 PM

glad to see you, and the vette in one piece
nothing that extreme has happened to me in the jeep... but once when only 2wd was engaged, and a heavy rain, i hydroplaned something fierce, which i was able to recover @50mph. its pretty crazy as you arent expecting that at all.

No.1 11-23-2004 01:03 PM

Very scary indeed, but you managed to keep your head. I certainly wouldn't be so calm :P

You were very lucky... judging by the size of the truck in this pic, it could have ended a disaster :(

coombsie66 11-23-2004 06:36 PM

SHIT! Serious brown pants moment there! Glad your ok, that could have been really nasty

Pimp Racer 11-23-2004 06:41 PM

Man thats scary! Thankfully you are safe! Hey here's some advice have you ever heard of the stuff called rainz? THAT STUFF IS THE BEST!! It actually works also!
Oh and its like only 2 bucks!

Anonymous 11-23-2004 06:42 PM

I'm a bit late spying this thread, but glad to see all is in one piece :D I'm sure i wouldn't have been quite so calm in your situation :P

Pimp Racer 11-23-2004 06:45 PM

 yeah I would have been scared to shit and then when going back on the track do about only 35-50 MPH and stay on the sides or something.

mindgam3 11-23-2004 06:48 PM

unlucky, but then again kinda lucky at the same time.... especially if there was a concrete central reservation or the grass was narrower.....

Wutputt 11-23-2004 06:54 PM

Mmm missed this one. I'm glad you and your Vette have survived this all in one piece. Your heart must be going 200 mph when you were spinning towards the upcoming traffic! I once had my back suddenly break out and I couldn't catch it anymore. Luckily I came to a stop very close to a crash barrier, but my heart was ticking like it never ticked before.

budagboy2 11-23-2004 07:09 PM

Holy shit, good to see everything is ok

raphaelws 11-23-2004 07:35 PM

Holy fuck that sucks. Glad you're ok. Btw how fast were you going when this happened?

ZfrkS62 11-23-2004 09:59 PM

Someone mentioned earlier "in a spin, 2 feet in" How does that work? Clutch in, brake when backwards? off brakes when straightened out? i know in my Z when the ass would kick out all i had to do was stab the clutch and let the tires catch again and i would be straightend out. Same idea in a 360 spin?

i hope you wouldn't have said the same thing if he had gotten smacked by a semi-truck.

nurbrun 11-23-2004 11:45 PM

Fuck that must have been scary. Glad you and the vette survived!

must have been one hell of a thrill tho
