McLaren F1: how many built in total?
Does anyone know exactly how many F1's were built. and also how many street version GTRs?
And, are all the F1's over a mill$$$ no matter the mileage? Or the higher the mileage the less the price? :D Last, if you live in the US where do you take your F1 for service? 8) |
100
The numbers are here http://www.mclarencars.com/content/s...infr/sales.htm Also a lot of info about sales too. There is usually one for sale here www.taylorandcrawley.com |
i think ameritech for the service, or some high-profile BMW dealer.
price is mainly depending on any extra's, history and the economic situation, cos when u buy 1 it'll go to McLaren where they fully make it as new, and u get to change whatever u want (colour, options, etc.). i believe 100 were built, but that doesn't count the prototypes, and they're also still out there. |
^^ i remember reading that all protoptyes were destroyed. one in the desert during hot weather testing, and their test rigs, edward and albert, were crushed
|
You take it to a BMW dealer for minor serivicing, and for major things you have to put it on a plane back to England to go to McLaren...

Edward & Albert (which were crushed, you are right) were the early, early prototypes, and they were built from Ultima GTR chassis. The first one had a Chevy V8 in there to approximate the power of the BMW V12, and the second one had the BMW V12 in it. They used them to test the gearbox and cooling, etc, as well as the feasibility of carbon brakes...way back in the early 1990s! |
i thonk only 5 LM's right? :?:

I have a book of the nicest cars of the last 50 years, a big book, saying a total of 300 F1 cars :? but I just see some say 100, don't know
|
Well, I would believe the McLaren website above a book. So I would stick with 100.
|
I´ve also read on some German site that there are only 100 of them. And Tiff also mentioned it in his Greatest Cars special.

In Driving Ambition they tell exactly how many were built and what color each one was, and I believe its 108 (including XPs and longtail roadcar), although I'm not 100% sure about that. |

It's mine  All the info is on the McLaren site. |
XP4 is owned by an uber-rich punter in LA-LA land USA..
And QV500 is probably the most accurate "value research tool" for prospective super-car buyer... http://www.qv500.com/indexmclaren.htm http://www.z06vette.com//forums/show...ht=mclaren+xp4 http://www.z06vette.com//forums/show...ht=mclaren+xp4 http://www.z06vette.com/gallery/data...claren_003.jpg http://www.z06vette.com/gallery/data...claren_004.jpg http://www.z06vette.com/gallery/data...claren_005.jpg http://www.z06vette.com/gallery/data...claren_006.jpg http://www.z06vette.com/gallery/data...laren_0091.jpg http://www.z06vette.com/gallery/data...claren_008.jpg http://www.z06vette.com/gallery/data...claren_010.jpg http://www.z06vette.com/gallery/data...claren_011.jpg http://www.z06vette.com/gallery/data...claren_001.jpg |
^^^^^^^ Did it cost him as much as a "new" model, or.......
|
Does anyone know whether any of the prototypes of the F1 were turbo charged? Reason I ask is I have seen a video of Mika Hakkinen taking some journalists for a drive in the F1 (XP5) and he says "you can hear the turbo whistling" :? . Now I would have thought Mika Hakkinen would know weather the car he’s driving is turbo charged or not. Especially when he just finished driving an F40 and an EB110.
|
no hakkinen is just plain wrong. XP5 was the car that set the record of 240.1mph on Ehra Lessien, thats basically a McLaren F1 final version, no turbo's at all. BTW RC45 thanks for the pics, real nice ones :D

I believe 100 is the number of cars originally built to be sold to customers (including the GTRs, which were built at the request of customers who wanted to race the F1), but I promise you there were more than just 100 built. Thanks for the pics RC. ;) |
yeah i thought the complete total number was 107, original plans were for 300

BTW this is the most nitpicking discussion ever on JW |
Anyone else have the Mclaren book"Driving Ambition", probably the coolest book i have. So many amazing pictures, and it details the whole process of making the car.
I recomend it :) |
I also recommand it, this is a must have for every F1 lover. You can also buy the limited edition at 575 £ or, if you are an F1 owner, 1000 £
|
The french mag Sport-Auto (scan available in the magazine scans section) reports 99 (incl 28 GTR) without the prototypes
|
id love to buy it but i simply dont have the money right now :(

Too bad the book is at home...and I'm at college. :( Anyways, thanks for clearing it up RC, I knew it was more than just 100 cars. |
