AMV8 faster than GT3

According to Autocar, AMV8 prototypes have been lapping the nurburgring at 7 minutes 51 seconds, faster than the GT3. Looks like this new Aston's gonna be a stunner ;)

thoughts?

Fleischmann 08-28-2004 01:52 PM

This comes as a huge surprise to me.I heard that the AMV8 was a great sports car, but I find it hard to believe these news. Every car mag, TV programme always mentioned that the AMV8 was going to rival with the standard 911. But before I get my hopes up, I'll wait for results from official tests.

Any links ??

gottacatchup 08-28-2004 01:52 PM

Wow that's an amazing time, but I thought they were supposed to rival the 911 turbo so how does it compare to that time?

1zippo1 08-28-2004 01:53 PM

If that's not a prototype with a specific race setup... then I'm stunned. Aston Martins aren't famous for their track performance. Usually they're much too heavy for that. But if this is true, I'm looking forward to seeing some reviews of the AMV8. But too be honest, for know, I'm a bit sceptic about your message.

mindgam3 08-28-2004 01:58 PM

Well they're offical AM times so....

To be honest i'm suprised as well, but considering AM's are supposed to be more luxury than sporty, even if it was a race specific setup (but why would they bother testing that?) the production version is going to be a very fast car by the looks of things.

Prototypes aren't usually as fast as production models though and even so, thats a whole 2 seconds (i think) faster than the GT3

the GT3 is faster around a track than the turbo

Vansquish 08-28-2004 01:59 PM

Amazing...finally a proper sports car from Aston hehe...the sound that those prototypes make is pretty amazing too:

thanks for the link ;)

and at about £60,000.... this is going to be some car if all goes well

Driftzwerg 08-28-2004 02:03 PM

Same goes for me. I`m addicted to the beauty of that car, but I don`t believe that it can keep up with an 381 hp GT3, that is a race car. The Aston is a GT. And it gets probably the Jaguar R Engine. which produces 395 hp. The new 911 Turbo will get 480 hp according to Auto bild.
Even if they push the engine up to 450 bhp, it won`t outrun the Porsche brakes, or the turbos 4wd.

Still.. it is a beauty and would look  teriffic in front of my house

mindgam3 08-28-2004 02:16 PM

Well the DB9 weighs 1700kg, so considering this is supposed to be a sports model rather than a GT, i wouldnt be suprised of a kerb weight of 1500kg or less, still not very light, but not too heavy either. AM says power output is going to be somewhere between 400 and 500bhp but nothings been confirmed yet.

True that the prototype won't entirely refelct the production model, but seeing as though theres a 2 second gap to play with, plus taking into consideration how well they got the big DB9 to handle, i wouldnt be suprised if it could lap in the same region as the GT3 or new carrera S which it is rivalling, not the turbo as this will probably be around 30k more.

And as u said, even if it doesen't lap as fast, the looks are way better than the porches and almost undoubtedly the sound will be too ;)

gottacatchup 08-28-2004 02:20 PM

Hopefully it wont fall to the same fate as the DB9 which started with rave reviews and then as it was compared to other models in the same class slowly fell out of favor. Either way i'd rather have an aston then a porsche

Vansquish 08-28-2004 02:28 PM

I don't think the DB9 has really fallen out of favor...what I've read says that it's a bit more focussed than the Bentley Conti GT and the 575M is really not intended as a competitor, nor is the 612, as it's in an entirely different price range. The AM is just so much more beautiful and more unique than most of the other cars in its price bracket that it's taking a little time to realize that.

The AMV8 will no doubt be in a similar predicament, though it will also probably be a fair amount quicker than the DB9 around any given track and the Vantage version of it it will certainly outpace the standard DB9 in a straight line as well.

yeah, i've never seen a bad review of the DB9, and there isn't any real competitor. Other GT's are either too soft or much more expensive, or people compare it to the 911 - which isn't a GT.

Ford Capri 2.8i 08-28-2004 02:33 PM

Once we needs some confirmation about the power and the weight of the car, for instance, 100kg more or less means a lot when getting a lap time even in powerful cars as these group(the 911 GT3, the 360 Modena), and doubt between between 400 and 500bhp (even between 400 and 450 bhp) makes more influence in a lap time....anyway....the certain thing is that the porsche 911s GT3 lap time is awesome in any racetrack(the car is light, and the suspension, brakes, gearbox...are very well combined , and its time in Nurbungring its not an exception...lets see who the car will be when well get the confirmation of the the weight and the number of horsepower of it...once the ratio power/weight is primordial to guess the performances of the car

EVO rated the DB9 below the 911 Turbo and SL55 AMG while Car and Driver rated it below the CL600 and 612 Scaglietti. The magazines seem to absolutely love the car but when it comes down to it, it never ranks first in test.

RC45 08-28-2004 03:47 PM

Well - well - well.

Amazing - why all the hating on the AM now? Just because it is kicking th GT3's ass in it's own backyard?

So typical - no one questions the possibility and believeability every time Porsche or Ferrari reach a new level of performance... but as soon as a Allied manufacturer kicks their ass - all the Axis supports cry foul... :P

I think that now that EVERYONE does their development work at the 'Ring - they can all easily reach and exceed the Axis cars numbers... - as shown by the plastic push rod leaf spring Yank, and now the overweight portly English gent... :P

I love it.. the AM has more style, refinement and luxury in it'sd glove bax than the GT3 has in the entire car.. AND it whips it's ass in it's own sand box... LOL .... :P

jorge 08-28-2004 08:15 PM

I also find that hard to believe (but of course it can happen).
IMO Aston has been in the recent years the marque with the most beutiful cars (they don´t offer a single ugly model), and having one that can beat a GT3 in a track would be awesome!

komotar 08-29-2004 03:58 AM

Let's make a bet.

I bet it will do a lap in 8min flat.

Make this a sticky topic.

possessed_beaver 08-29-2004 04:02 AM

at the end of the day - i know what car i would rather be seen in.

komotar 08-29-2004 05:55 AM

Aston for the city.

360 CS for the track.

GT3 way in the back.

I'm a poet and I don't know it. 8)

X-ale 08-29-2004 06:23 AM

After Eminem, Omotard 8)

mindgam3 08-29-2004 09:53 AM

well i guess we'll all find out shortly ;)

I know for definate which one i'd take, even if it was 10 seconds slower than the GT3.....

nthfinity 08-29-2004 02:24 PM

im am fondly looking forward to the production of the amv8... now even more so with this sub 8 minute time :)

rc points out something quite interesting... why couldnt a car thats always been about luxury, and performance be un-suitable at kicking 8 minutes?

TT 08-31-2004 05:56 AM

Its not impossible, the new M5 has a time of 7.55 min according to BMW

astonmartinandy 08-31-2004 07:59 AM

I'm so glad that Aston is taking Porsche head on with this car. The Vantage name looks well deserved with this car and Aston Martins will once again rule the road - and perhaps the track after a spot of afternoon tea.

sentra_dude 08-31-2004 01:32 PM

^^^It better be under a $100K if they want to compete with the 911...

I'm still waiting to hear how this V8 sounds in person

mindgam3 08-31-2004 08:07 PM

all magazines i read say £60,000 which is about $100,000 but no doubt you'll get it for less :P

yes the AMV8 is indeed very good but i'll take my porsche pls and thank you very much.

Euhm, is my english so bad or do you need to read that again :) (no offence ment)

if he says it's not impossible, he means it is possible that the AMV8 ran a 2 seconds faster lap then the GT3...

excatly, that what I meant, you and me aren't even from the states but you understood me but not the houston guy. :D

and if you guys understand this
GT3 will kill AM on a smaller tracks with more curves.

Ziploc 09-01-2004 08:54 AM

IMO because of norcshleifes ludicrisly long straight the difference in horsepower will mean that the AM could catch the porche there

astonmartinandy 09-01-2004 12:26 PM

Yes the Porsche may be faster on a track with tighter corners and shorter straights, but will the owners of their brand new 911 be able to say "Shall we take the Aston?" :D

jamberl 09-06-2004 09:07 PM

Arent we jumping the gun here? Its a prototype, so the spec hasnt been finalised yet. What about the R33 skyline that lapped in under 8 mins? It was a prototype as well. Just shows what some suspension tuning and added power can do in a car that is heavier and less powerful than the 911.

The REAL test is what the finished item can achieve. And you can't tell me that a stock, off the rack R33 could achieve sub 8 mins at the 'ring. Im guessing it will be the same for the AMV8.

LotusGT1 09-09-2004 02:07 PM

The R33 runs stock about 8.25-8.30 on the 'Ring.

st-anger 09-09-2004 02:52 PM

lol, the Carrera GT prototype had something around 1200kg so ~200 lighter than the production version - so it clocked a 7:32 yesterday with HvS ..... so, what would it clock with 200kg´s off

seriously, i´m definitely not the "Porsche is everything on NS" guy, no discussion, NS is definitely a very very good Porsche ground, but a sub 8 for the AMV8 - well, not very likely IMO...
with something around 370-380hp for the AMV8, so more or less same hp figure as the GT3 --- and it should be faster....!!!???
faster than a track oriented car with almost zero comfort, stripped out... against the state of the art equipped Aston, the AMV8 will be way heavier than the GT3 so how could it clock a sub 8 then....maybe they´ve found the magic tyre!???....who knows....

and didn´t the Gallardo clock a 7:52 --- with 500hp....

i think we should wait and see, e.g. for a Supertest with HvS and then talk - nevertheless, i´d love to see the Aston performing well, but sorry, a sub 8 is quite optimistic IMO...

Exactly. Yet the prototype did a sub 8 minute run.
So with the AMV8 we should wait and see. Just because the test car can do it, doesnt mean the finished item can.

It will certainly be interesting to see.

Does anyone know if there has been a supertest of the DB9?

the test has been made two days ago at NS...
besides, on the same day there had been a test of a MTM RS6 and the second test of the Carrera GT...
they´ll appear in the mag sometime in winter i guess...

madmelon 09-11-2004 05:19 AM

The whole idea of the V8 Vantage was to have somthing to rival the 911's. The factory has never said it will ONLY rival the base 911. They're the worlds fastest growing car company and it only makes sense to have this car competing at different levels. This car has so much potential, as do the DB9 and the Vanquish. It would be foolish not to take advantage of at least a little bit of that (no pun intended).
I don't really care how fast the car is, even though I'm an Aston fanatic, because I know that it looks better and has more class than any porche ever could and thats what Aston Martin intends. They know they're in a class of their own and thats exactly where they intend to stay.

pilone 09-11-2004 06:04 AM

I don't believe in that news just because the new Carrera S laps 7 and 59!!
so, sorry but GT3 is a bit faster!!

mclaren_Gt 09-13-2004 09:56 AM

i think the AMV8 is faster than GT3

rachaderua 09-13-2004 08:50 PM

wow...7 and 50 seconds at house at nurburgring is awesome man....must be very fast at acceleration and mainly at handling cause those corners are very bumpy and tricky...good car overall

scharreltje 09-14-2004 03:55 PM

kinda makes sense.... i would much rather drive in an AMV8 instead of an GT3, much more comfortable.......

wolfster 09-14-2004 07:46 PM

the aston's got spirit AND engineering now..nice..it's just soo much more elegant than the GT3
