Which CPU
 

i have no idea which CPU to get. within my budget i could get a P4 3GHz or AMD Athlon64 3200

i pretty much do everything. encoding, games, office apps. I also want to make a home theatre PC out of it. i'll also be getting a HDTV tuner card. and lastly i use MATLAB a lot, so simply i need it to do mathematical calculations quickly.

another thing, i'd prolly won't upgrade for prolly another 4-5 yrs. which will still be better suited for futre applications 5 years later?

It's not for nothing that AMD is cheaper... let's say they tend to melt more easely

I voted for AMD.. cheaper, good performance and my XP1700+, with a couple extra vents it never melted in the past years :D

yea i know the future question was hard to answer coz computers move so quickly. but i had to ask coz i'm not a real expert

well if i was going to get AMD, the motherboard i was going to get was ASUS K8V SE Deluxe. the reviews said it was good compared to Gigabyte.

AMD - as TT said its cheaper and good performance. If you compare a P4 of the same value, AMD will almost always be better, especially for games and graphic orientated stuff. Thats the reason i bought mine, a XP1500+ and had it for a few years, never let me down so far, no problems with over heating at all.

Get the AMD 64

Pal AMD is the way to go....me use an AMD Athlon XP 2600 its damn cool. Pentiums of the same specs r much too expensive n also do not perform as well as an equivalent AMD.....also as frm what i have readand seen, AMDs are more comaptible with any kind of motherboards than Pentiums.
Buy an AMD 64....the latest 1

I have always had intel, and Ive never had anything go wrong with it..the only reason I would say Intel over the AMD is because I have read that the Intel is much better with mulit-tasking because of H/T technology

Definitely the AMD, they rock in ScienceMark! For number crunching, AMD is much better than P4. The only reason to go with P4 is if you're a hardcore gamer with unlimited budget ;)

Personally, I prefer to split the budget into 2 and just buy 2 "new" PCs during the 4-5yrs period. That way you get 2 relatively fast PCs for the same amount of money. Not to mention you get a spare one for some other use (like HTPC).

Yup true, the P4 is (was) the better Processor by miles for Video encoding but with the release of the new AMD 64 chip it's equals now.

hmm...Go with AMD. I have a 2400+ and a 2800+ super fast and hasnt given me any problems what so ever. Also, I tested my AMD XP 2400+ which is 1.99 ghz btw way...it totally out performs my dads Intel 2.66 ghz. hmm...AMD 64 bit processors I dont recommend yet due to that fact that its not capable which much things right now. But since you said you dont wanna upgrade for another 4-5 years. You could get it since by that time 64 bit would pretty much be out and about.

AmD , simply cuz they are more value for money , they are even faster than the Intel and cost less

stracing I can tell you after having 2 very similar systems (a64 3200+ and p4 3.2 northwood) that the amd will give the p4 a spanking in almost everything you can throw at it, and as thamar says if you go that route be sure to get nf3 motherboard not the via shit ;)

Enough said so far. AMD owns. I dont think I will ever go intel...other than for a lap top.

Actually Athlon 64s are better than P4s in games.

I'd say go with the Athlon. 64-bit computing won't be here for a little while, but as it stands Athlon 64s are better in almost every category than its P4 equivalent.

definately AMD, jus as TT said. but i am very curious to know, why is it that ur not running windows xp when u have an amd xp 1700+, TT? ur pc can definately handle it

hey thamar, you told me to get the gigabyte MB but a review said it was average. i looked up toms hardware guide and the MB with VIA chipset seems to be better.

I dont know about current AMDs but old amds were rubbish. And that has set me on the road of "FUCK AMD". They are extremly unstable, crashing left and right. And just frying if you didnt have a 120mm 7000rpm fan on it. Oh and the tendency to crush sometimes. Oh and the laptops. Even the current ones. Sometimes I'm really scared, and wonder if I should turn it off and give it a break because is gets so hot that the plastic is almost at melting point temperatures.

Im pretty sure they new ones are good but they are a no no in my book. Dont like them period. Out of all experiance I had with them none were good. This is just an opinnion based on my experiances, so fan boys please dont jump me.


Look at my P4 2.4 800. My heat sink is litteraly cold on a not hot day ever since I got my self a good case. Atm I run it at 2.6. Overclocked 200mhz its running temperatures compared to stock are indentical. All I have is the stock heatsink/fan on it. It can do 2.8 on stock cooling. I did it before, but I dont know how long my memory can hang with it.

Bottom line based on my experiances with AMDs there was nothing good. And my P4 looks like an OC machine. People overclock this chip to 3.6GHZ with air cooling. It can do 3.3GHZ and run as stable as an atari on water cooling. Now tell me which is a better chip for the money?

i use to be for amd, but i think the intel cpu's comming up, are going to have some serious peformance..

till then i think amd is the name of the game.

altho for a laptop a "pentium M" is the only cpu i would ever use!

There's nothing wrong with Via... They're just slow to introduce new things such as the agp/pci lock, which prevent people from overclocking high and therefore nVidia got a lot of a market share at that time. But as of right now Nvidia still has the advantage performance wise for Athlon 64s. Not too sure about the XPs as I haven't read any reviews on Via's new chipset, but I'm guessing Nvidia is still leading in that department aswell.

But you have to agree that the chip im have now is the damn best OCing chip on the market :P

BTW Just so you know. Im doing 3GHZ with my 2.4C. I going to push it more. At 3 ghz it does benchamrks no problem and runs at the same temperature as it does at 2.4 :D

i got my computer...i let the IT guys at work do the installation and came back with 20 games. so typical :P

anyways, its the first time ive seen games played so smoothly at the highest settings on my very own computer. very happy with it atm :D

I was on Toms hardware, and there was this video where they put some stuff, and blocked the L1 Bridge and it made it faster or something... how does it make it faster/ wtf!!

Edit- it was an Amd 1900+ and got it to 1.666Ghz, and for some reason, on the front screen it said amd 2000+ after they were finished.

I didn't see that but I'm guessing they unlocked it and jacked up the fsb.

My little corner of the home is my play area. Now i just need a bigger TV, which should come in christmas when stores are having sales. I got the Belkin 2 port USB switch which i asked about few months. Now i can share my KVM with my laptop.

Nice setup. I personally would've spent a little more and gotten a 9800pro instead of the 9600xt. But everything else is damn nice. Although your case is kinda messy :lol:.

when i was in HK, which was in Feb, 9800 was a bit too much. I bought the soundcard and video card over there because they were alot cheaper than here. but the other parts are very similar priced. don't know why i waited this long to buy other stuff.

yep its GB MB. yea its messy in the photos but its better now. took out all the unnecessary stuff the guys installed for me.

nice.. all you need now is a x800pro/xt to replace that 9600 then it will murder any game :D

i'll have another mega upgrade few years later. money is always the issue.

on my other desktop, would you believe i've been running 800Mhz Duron, Diamond Monster Fusion, SB Live and other dinosaur parts till now. its still operational too, now its just used for downloading and testing purposes.
