Corvette C6 Topgear Track time.

Quote from a viper forum

Quote:

The show go's out this sunday, looks like it went quite well.
Not my words below:

Yesterday the C6 was in the studio for recording the show and "The Stig" drove a fast lap. The Corvette set a good lap time, even beating the Lotus Exige, which had been specially set-up for the track.

1. Mercedes McLaren SLR - 1.20.9
2. Ford GT - 1.21.9
3. Ferrari 360 CS - 1.22.3
3. Porsche GT3 RS - 1.22.3
5. Murcielago - 1.23.7
6. Zonda - 1.23.8
7. Koenigsegg - 1.23.9
8. Noble - 1.25.0
9. Gallardo - 1.25.8
10. Corvette C6 - 1.26
11. Lotus Exige - 1.26.4
12. Porsche 911 GT3 - 1.27.2

Richard Hammond the presenter was generally very positive about the car. He liked the performance and styling enormously. The engine and handling got a lot of praise and the head-up-display is now one his favourite features. Of course they also had some criticism, like the interior build quality.

RC45 07-30-2004 04:49 PM

The bastards... :D

What will it take to get em to have The Stig throw an "old" Z06 around so we can lay to rest how good we had it from 2001 through 2004... :)

I bet the Lotus guys are creaming their pants about know... ;)

DanielW 07-30-2004 05:04 PM

can't wait for the z06. I wonder if it will be as huge of a leap as the C5 Z06 was over the C5 coupe/vert.

coloradosilver 07-30-2004 05:09 PM

For the stock C6 to do better than the GT3 is very impressive, especially for the difference in price. I can't wait for the new Z06 to come out and get out there with the Stig. Should see some awesome results.

RC45 07-30-2004 05:16 PM

If it is as big of a leap forward, then the new C6 Z06 will be the one for the $Million Dollar$ cars to beat...

Again... ;)

totally agree its uber cheap in comprisson

DMbaseball1604 07-30-2004 05:47 PM

yeah, that is impressive...but my family has owned several GM cars..and we have owned 2 porsches..

We will never buy another GM again because the build quality is terrible..I love the way Chevys drive and look but they arent made nearly as well as they were before the strike in 1994..

Our Porsches have been great...never had any problems with them and I really think even though they are much more expensive..you get what you pay for..

T-Bird 07-30-2004 05:58 PM

that is very impressive but not to sway the topic why the hell isn't the time's list up to date? they are missing the CGT...
I still can't wait for the C6 review it will be great to see these guys have to admit that the Americans are getting back in the game finally.
Sadly we won't see the Z06 I'm guessing unless GM is going to start selling them officialy over there.

jpatino03 07-30-2004 06:05 PM

That's very impressive indeed. I'm kinda surprised that TG had access to a new 'vette.
Isn't there a rumored "blue devil" in the works with a 7 liter 700 HP engine?

BADMIHAI 07-30-2004 06:13 PM

The Porsche GT3's lap was in the wet.

Yeah, and it was SOAKING wet. Still an impressive time from the C6 vette.

It is also their limited-edition, hand-made, premiere, no-holds-barred, no-expense-sparred, trimmed-down, light-weight, racer-wannabe uber-sportscar...

Unlike the piece of GM crap - which is their generic, mass-produced, plastic-lined, cheap-ass, entry-level lump of pig-iron.,. :P

Now which car seems to have done it's makers proud...???? ;)

thats hilarious

I want to see video of this test however its seems wierd for an overseas magazine to get a full track test before American one, the C6 being an American car :?

Not really when you think about it. The C6 would still sell here if it was the slowest piece of shit ever. It's a Corvette, people will buy it.
Whereas in Europe, they won't go out and buy it just because it's a Corvette. I call it an attempt to increase sales in Europe.

You do get very good performance from a Porsche, the GT3 may not be as fast as the new C6 around the track, which would surprise the hell out of me, but as far as quality, endurance and build quality I dont believe any car on the road can surpass a Porsche..and for me thats what counts. But I guess my opinion cannot really count since I'm so biased against GM..lol

Purely on performance, corvettes are very good and the new C6 looks great and I'm looking forward to see what they say about it on Top Gear!

yeah but we are talking about a quality and performance combo...I agree honda and toyota do have great quality but IMO they arent on the level of a corvette or Porsceh in terms of performance

That same argument has been used since the beginning of time... ;)

The nice thing about the the green flag is - that as soon as it drops - the bullshit stops.. :P ;)

SFDMALEX 07-30-2004 09:36 PM

Remember. GT3 lapped in wet. And we are talking lap times, not "interior design".

So that GT3 could have lapped 2 seconds faster easily.

OK - fair enough... so the GT3 only laps in .5 second faster than the C6 coupe.

That doesn't say much for the GT3 though.. :P ;)

Just because they're not as quick in a straight line (which is worthless anyway, drag racing is dumb) and not made in America doesn't make them bad cars.

Well we can always say that the ambiet temperatures during the GT3 lap were very low making its tires perform even worse...ohh and did I say that Stig favors the Vette so he drove it harder

SO now we can say the GT3 is not a good allrounder, and is easily tripped up by a little rain.. ;)

Should have done what I did, ignore any post with numbers.
I still don't know how fast it went around the track, I do know it was close to the GT3 though. I'll be doing my best to keep it that way untill I see the episode. As matter of fact, I think I'm gonna ignore this thread from now on so noboady inadvertantly spoils it for me.

AlienDB7 07-30-2004 11:46 PM

The 'vette is so much cheaper than the GT3, you can spend the price difference on a replacement in 5 years when the next gen comes out :)

So, at the end, you get more cars and performance for the same amount of money.

Looking forward to see the episode... and jeremy's face after he sees the lap time

or you can send it to Lingenfelter with the money you saved and rape the living shit out of GT3's

Or like coloradosilver did, if you are mechanically able - do the work yourself and STILL have a car that rapes the GT3 everywhere... ;)

Yeah I could do that but then at the end of the day it's still a standard Corvette even if it is faster than a Z06 or whatever if it says Z06 or Lingenfelter it's a whole different level of car. you know what I mean.

LOL  - ;) THAT is exactly the argument the Porsche guys use... :P

The "snobby" appeal... ;) I may give colorado a hard time about it being the "hairdressers" version... but his version was an awesome version there of.. ;)

T-Bird 07-31-2004 12:46 AM

I'm not saying Colorado's car wasn't a great car but If I had a Corvette and the cash to blow on it all at once it would be in Indiana in a heart beat.

DMbaseball1604 07-31-2004 03:04 AM

Its just a preference issue...I disagree, I would much rather have any Porsche than something with questional build quality...I would say any German Car but ..my dad bought an Audi a few years ago and it over-heated on the way home..haha so he took it right back to the dealership and his BMW 745LI has had too many problemst to count...

I just Prefer Porsche because of the way they build cars..which I guess is obvious by now..

mindgam3 07-31-2004 07:25 AM

Either way, i'd take the prosche every single time. The day when i even think of buying a corvette will be the day i loose all sense with reality :P

heath 07-31-2004 09:32 AM

So the yanks finally built a car that goes fast around a track eh? Given its questionable build quality and well....primative gearbox and engine I say good on ya America, good on ya. Lets see what the "cheap" corvette is worth in a few years as a percentage of its original purchase price as compared to say I dunno a GT3. I reckon you'll see more of your $$$ when it comes to sale time with the Porsche than the yank tank. All said and done tho, vettes are friggin sexy cars, but no car is even close to a 911 with tail gear ;)

But when it comes to the choice between gt3 and vette, out of pure practicallity on a day to day basis I'd take the vette. Its gonna have suspension like a big cusion not steel rods and its gonna have aircon, power everything, sunroof, stereo, leather, etc, etc. And really...who the hell takes their car on a track everyday to get to work???? I don't atleast....I'm a porsche man at heart, but my head says take the vette.

Dude do some research.. Theres nothing pimative about the ls2 engine. Your saying.. oh its pushrod right about now. Did you realize that pushrod is actually a newer technology then overhead cam? Oh so now your saying hp/liter.. but who was the last person that said.. hey.. my hps a head of yours by internal volume so I win the race?
So now we go to hp/weight of the engine.. hey look.. the ls2 engine is like 470 (very conservative estimate, I know its sub 500 but I dont have numbers in front of me) some lbs.. 400hp/470 lbs.. thats damn impressive.. much better then most cars.. certainly better then cars like the gt40 550 or so hp depending on source /700 something..
So how about we look at the transmission. Often considered one of the most bullet proof transmissions available. Very smooth shifting..
Build quality doesnt go to the 911 either.. The corvettes are just as reliable..
The only thing in the 911 corner is refinement and the name(interior acutriments and body pannel fit... for example). But the huge price difference basically evens that out.

 - your point? These facts have been known and true for years now.. including the fact that year for year there has always been a Corvette model, that out of the box kicked Porsches nads from here to kingdom come.. ;)

Im in no way saying its a bad car. And if i had the choice of having a ferrari or a porsche, id take the ferrari every time, even though i know that the porsche will almost definately be faster. But thats not really the same arguement, ferrari and porsche are two marques i admire. I could never bring myself to by a corvette, however fast it may be....

As i said in the top gear forum, I think they should run it into a wall like they did with those older cars rather than take it round a track :P

See and here we are with my point about paying for the badge.

Max Power 07-31-2004 03:38 PM

Don't think in terms of performance numbers, (0.5 sec quicker), boo hoo, think in terms of sales, Porsche can live with losing out to a Vette in performance for money, but as long as they outsell it by 1000:1 in every market other than North America it will keep them satisfied. Because in the end, sales is what matters.

T-Bird 07-31-2004 03:56 PM

yes sales are what matters but what's the ratio of GT3:Corvette...
Corvettes sell like crazy in the markets they are available because they are such great machines and they are driveable if you put up all of Porsche to all of GM, GM rapes the shit out of Porsche in sales numbers in almost every market.

lol, fair enough for comparing the C6 to a GT3 RS, but i don't think you can compare GM to Porsche....

And Plus, Porsche sell a hell of a lot more 911's in europe than they do corvettes....

T-Bird 07-31-2004 04:09 PM

well no shit they sell more 911's than Corvette's but that's too broad of a statement that's like saying BMW sells more 3 series then Audi sells S4's it's not a fair comparison by any means.

You have to compare direct compitition and in that sense the GT3 (not RS) sells alot less than Corvettes
