276hp AWD Mazda 6

Mazda is prepping its own entry for the Subie-Mitsu rally wars—a 276-hp, 265-lb-ft Mazda 6 scheduled for a mid-2005 world debut. Spotted during hot-weather tests in the California desert, this sizzling prototype gets a twin-turbocharged and intercooled 2.3-liter four that is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and sends power via all-wheel drive to 18-inch tires.

Based on Mazda’s Mazda Performance Series concept shown in Paris in 2002, the production model should debut at this September’s Paris show, carrying either the MPS or MazdaSpeed moniker.

doesnt look as agressive as the concept they showed when the 6 was released. but the specs are hot. now toyota and honda needs to pick up their game

I wonder what kinda AWD system they gonna put in that thing....Hopefully not some 100/0 shit until some wheels is slipping.

evoWalo 07-16-2004 01:37 PM

graywolf624 07-16-2004 01:46 PM

it will probably be from the Jaguar's or Volvo's either that or they will make an entirely new system maybe based off the Focus WRC system...

ahmedgiyab 07-16-2004 03:03 PM

I heard of this model more than a year ago....but since then nothing happened....

I'm not sure that this territory is going to be a success for Mazda......

I am in the market of buying a car soon....so hopefully they will come out with something good so I have another choice. So far it is: G35, Legacy 2.5GT, TL (I know I know..it's FWD..but damn it's very nice inside)

Vansquish 07-16-2004 05:20 PM

I actually think that the regular Mazda 6s is a more aggressive looking vehicle. That front bumper, lip spoiler and lower rear fascia really don't do it for me on that prototype.

Ziploc 07-16-2004 05:47 PM

isn't 276bhp a lil low for a twin TCed 2.3 six-pot?

X-ale 07-16-2004 06:07 PM

Are they gonna go WRC :?: Whooo that'd be good... The only way to say they are better than the mitsu & sub's is to go to war on their battlefield... :D Maybe for 2007/2008... :?

276bhp is japans 280ps agreed engine power limit. they need to abolish that quick

Schwalbe 07-18-2004 10:42 PM

The 2002 Mazda 6 MPS concept car was much more cool.

Well, keeping it under 2.0 is to undercut certain taxing brackets in Japan. But I believe they are now aiming at the under 2.4L displacement bracket.

Afterall, 2.3 280hp should be better than 2.0 280hp rite? To me, the more low-end grunt the better.

I doubt Ford would go for that idea.

You have to realize that they have Mazda 6's with engines over 2.0L

They have the 2.3 and 3.0 engines, 170hp in the 2.3 and 220 in the 3.0

Japan puts out cars over that hp limit all the time they just don't sell them in Japan they sell them in Europe and North/South America

SilviaEvo 07-19-2004 01:27 AM

a nice sleeper but keep engine change body

Just so you know, the 2.3 is actually an inline 4 with a balancer shaft or two (can't remember how many hehe). Despite that, in stock trim it makes 160bhp, so getting 276bhp from it shouldn't be that hard...certainly ought to be upgradeable to something significantly higher.

T-Bird 07-19-2004 02:29 AM

well considering you can make 100+ hp with a turbo/intercooler kit for the Focus 2.3 (same engine) It's very reasonable, just add the Turbo change the cams, timing, fuel map, exhaust, compression, etc... I can see this HP rating insight.

Vansquish 07-19-2004 02:37 AM

Exactly, it shouldn't be difficult at all.
