I was looking at a TV program about astronomy and some phenomenoms from the planet and outerspace, and they said that theres an asteroid called Toutatis that was discovered in 1989 by a french astronomer, and then NASA target it in 1990, well the point is, that it is 4 kms wide, and you know whats the best part, its going to pass 1000000 kms from planet earth on Spet 29 2004, 1 million kms in outerspace is very little distance, they said that governments from the biggest countries already know about the problem, but they dont want to cause panic, the other thing they said is that , US and Europe already working on an atomic weapon that can make the asteroid change direction, but if you dont believe me, heres what I found.... It appears that every 4 years the asteroid is close to us. Why was this not an issue in 2000 or 1996 or 1992?

Because people are desperate little beings. We tend to worry and panic. There are lots of things society doesn't and shouldn't know. An asteriod heading towards Earth is just one of them. :|

Here's one potentially hazardous "object" we missed today (It was July 11 when i was writing this in US)

we know an estimated 5% of the PHA's, and nasa has a reletively new satalite which is made soley to discover such an asteroid.

the true PHA's are not orbiting in the given fasion that the planets do, but rather an orbit perpindicular to it, which makes it harder to discover.

i wonder if this asteroid on sept. 29 is going to cross the northern hemisphere, if so, ill take a picture of it :)

i guess all we can do now is wait and see what happens on that date. that is some freaky $hit.

well, the 1M kms is close, but it is not a colision :). So there's absolutely no need to panic. Also please note that if we were about to be hit by an asteroid and goverments were keeping it secret, you WOULD NOT know about it :D.

also the closest distance is going to be around 1M !miles! not kms, wich is about 4 times further than Moon.

However it IS the biggest several-kilometer Earth-orbit-crossing asteroid to pass near your homes in this century. So if you're still scared and preparing for the End of the World to come. You could really use this web site Earth Impact Effects Program to calculate what kind of damage it will cause etc (for the size enter smth like 2-3 kms, it's current relative (to Earth) speed is 11 km/s). Good luck.

Actualy it didn't hit the Earth (it exploded above the surface) and actualy it is believed to a comet :D. Nevertheless it was quite nasty...

I wouldnt be soooooo scared if I were you, think about ALL the other asteroids that came close to earth.....and only ONE hit (and thats a maybe) when the dinosaurs were around....so there isnt a BIG chance of them hitting earth :!:

Actualy if you want to be scared this is the "stone" you're looking for :) as I said there's no other km+ object wich will get closer than this one. Also this Toutatis has the most chaotic orbit studied to date, a consequence of the asteroid's frequent close approaches to Earth :twisted:.
