The Vanquish died today

:x Ok, so my dad and I took the car out for a drive and on the way home about a mile away from our house we stop at a stop sign, go through it and we notice that the gearbox is in neutral. We try to get it into first but nothing happened, just stayed in nurtural the hole time. Tried turning the car of and starting it again still wouldn't go into first. Long story short, a flat bed had to come pick the the car up and take it back to connecticut. I dont think any of our future cars will be f1 style shifting/paddles.
We were very lucky that the car died in the place that it did, if it would have been a busy street we would have be pretty fucked. Oh well, just gonna have to wait and see what the problem was.

sentra_dude 07-04-2004 12:38 AM

Damn that sucks...never have been a fan of the flappy-paddle gearboxes though.

I hope you can get it fixed :(.

5vz-fe 07-04-2004 12:41 AM

It's a mistake like Clarkson said...the should have put proper manual in that car

heyloo 07-04-2004 12:44 AM

Haha, I remember Clarkson saying that. I'm sorry that your baby died

sentra_dude 07-04-2004 12:46 AM

Or at least offer the option of a proper manual...I don't care if they offer that F1 shit, just offer a 6spd too.

Caps8419 07-04-2004 01:09 AM

the vanquish was mated w/ a crappy paddle system.... im pretty sure that its a commen problem in the vanquish for the paddles to fuck up. so dont discount all F1 style trasmissions just yet! if ur still looking at an enzo you still shouldn' be dissapointed by it.... but yea.... a manual is still the best overall.

I remember Clarkson saying that
that was in the DB9 vs Euro Train right? and that sucks Vanquish is awesome

5vz-fe 07-04-2004 02:36 AM

^^^ No, it was the episode where he and Damon Hill test out the Ferrari 575 and the Vanquish.

fabro_s 07-04-2004 02:55 AM

Thats a shame, sorry for you, I know its difficult too see a Vanquish dead!!!

bobafett 07-04-2004 04:34 AM

It's actually a fairly good system in the vanquish. I don't like paddles personally, but 10 to 1 either your clutch overheated or your tranny ECU quit on you.

BTW, it's a magneti marelli tranmission.

abbor 07-04-2004 05:13 AM

I like paddles, and think it looks interesting to drive a car with paddles.
The only thing I really have against it, is if the manual looks beatiful as in all Ferraris.

Sorry to hear about your Vanquish.

PATo355 07-04-2004 06:43 AM

I remember Clarkson saying that that gearbox is very bad , teh 575 one is much better , but dont think is a big problem , all those electronic shits can be corrected with a software

tanelvali 07-04-2004 06:48 AM

//.... I dont think any of our future cars will be f1 style shifting/paddles. ...//

Bye bye Enzo? :|

Caps8419 07-04-2004 11:46 AM

actually clarkson said it both episodes but most with the db9... i also asked a guy at a dealer about it and he said frankly that its pretty true... most of their repairs on that car were from the paddle shift failing....

boba... the tranny is good your right... same as ferrari... but its the relays from the paddle to the trans that gets killed... thats y its stuck in neutral...sucks big ass though.

stradale 07-04-2004 01:03 PM

Sorry to hear this, budagboy. That is bad news. Maybe a DB9 with manual gearbox will do the trick. Or the automatic of course, JC liked that one better than the mechanically operated manual of the Vanquish.

Hope she'll be up and running soon...

was that a quote from somewhere?? Either way F1 paddles will probably become more prominent in the future, I think in a few years they will have improved dramatically. Apparently the system in the enzo and in the 360 CS is a good, efficient system, it was in the original 360 apart from the jerkeyness; not many other manufacturers have yet to implement a decent system (except maybe the new AM DB9?). Also the benefits in race/track biased cars is a lot... quicker shifts (albeit very marginal) and also the driver dosent have to take his/her hands of the wheel... I doubt the manual will ever be replaced though.

It was quatation from budagboy2. And since his family is about to buy Enzo to their garage (which has shifting paddles), I asked that does it affect their decision of buying amighty Enzo.

budagboy2 07-04-2004 05:22 PM

I dont think it has a huge affect on our decision, but after it happened we are leaning towards manual cars. Not saying we wont get an enzo if a good opportunity comes up. Earlier in the week we got a call from the ferrari dealership saying they had a new 575 coming in and they want my dad to drive it. We are also looking into replacing the vanquish with either a 575 or a murcielago. But still, its gonna be a little while before we get any new cars.

Ford Capri 2.8i 07-04-2004 05:23 PM

I think that every brand will improve their paddles system little a little learning from the mistakes, failures, and they are going to improve the gearbox system by using a more sophisticated software....for me its going to be the future in every brand since in this moment the is a car with the paddle gearbox option in every size of cathegory(Citroen C2, Alfa 147, the Golf..., the Audi A4, the merc class C,...., the Audi A6, merc, bmw...., the Audi A8, merc, bmw.....ferrari 360, the cayenne..........)...furthermore...i think that every brand is going to take the mechanism of the Audi TT, since i think that this is the reference of a secquential gearbox because its the quickest gearbox ever, a very soft one, it seems that its not any handicap at all from the performances of the alternative every manual system...

On the other hand.....i dont fancy with this kind of gearbox,,,,im a big fan of a traditional gearboxes, and a fan of any non electronic aid car as well

TT 07-04-2004 08:13 PM

It's a shame indeed, but I hope an easy fix ;)

Anyway remember, even manual boxes can break :D and even regular auto ones :D so the only way is to buy a car with no gears whatsoever :D wich doesn't exists I fear :D

TT 07-04-2004 08:17 PM

LOL, a nice fixed stick you can't move anywhere :D great! :)

PATo355 07-05-2004 02:36 AM

Anyways i dont think buying a 575 is a good choice considering the replacement is due 2005 or 2006 ? That car will take over the GT segment

SPAD 07-08-2004 02:02 PM

If u are looking for that extra bit of performance a WELL BUILT paddle shift system is the way to go but if ur looking for Excitement and the enjoyment of not being called a pussy go with the stick. The only cars that should be paddle are cars that are made by companies in F1,but i would still prefer them stick

schnell318 07-08-2004 02:31 PM

Sorry to hear that, they should have put the DB9´s transmission in the Vanquish, i know it´s just an auto but it seems to perform far better

budagboy2 07-08-2004 03:32 PM

We heard back from the dealer, the car is fine. They said the problem was a defective part that costs about $10. So we should have to car back relatively soon.
Here are the pics of the f50 i was talking about, the one from the factory.

Caps8419 07-08-2004 05:52 PM

ok fine! you've convinced me! I'LL drive....
fifteen shmifteen! you got a permit! im almost twenty. its almost legal!
.... yea yea i dont think i would look directly at the car let alone touch/sit/move things inside of it..... and i'd be scared as hell to drive it (unless it was mine!!!!)
then its a deal 2 or 3 years.... roadtrip!!!!

by the way... how longish until it arrives from italy?

budagboy2 07-08-2004 06:09 PM

It all depends on when it leaves the factory(which should be within the next few days), once it leaves its being flown to customs somewhere in the east coast(i think). Then customs takes a few days, once customs is done it then goes to classic coach ferrari where we pic it up :). So my guess would be like 2-3weeks. The wait is horrible!

Caps8419 07-08-2004 06:48 PM

oh man thats sucks! well when you get it enjoy it as much as you can humanly can!!! congrats again too you (and ur dad lol)!!!

ps. suck up to your parents so you can take the f50 to prom! hehe

sentra_dude 07-08-2004 07:38 PM

An F50!!! Holy crap! We are expecting tons of pics, and vids! 8) jabba's gona be jealous...like the rest of us here, wow I can't wait to see some pics...the waiting must be horrible.

mrzonda 07-08-2004 08:19 PM

wow! an F50, that's more than awesome. that thing sounds awsome, one of the best i've ever heard. :D

just going back to the aston tranny thing for a second:

Quote:

BTW, it's a magneti marelli tranmission.
magneti marelli does the software that operates the transmission and gearbox. and i remember harry metcalfe writing in evo (either ecoty, or the one with the vanquish on the cover) that at 150mph the transmission went into neutral. he flicked the 'up' paddle, and luckily it reselected 5th and not 1st.

but anyway, enjoy that ferrari! :D

Toronto 07-08-2004 09:00 PM

no more problems just go get an SLR :D

Caps8419 07-08-2004 10:39 PM

an slr is basically the same transmission as a vanquish... its still a sequential trans but instead of paddles you smack a lever up and down.... stick to the f50's metal gated one.... so much more rewarding..... :D :D :D

T-Bird 07-08-2004 11:33 PM

actually the SLR has little buttons on the steering wheel I don't think the lever moves to shift the car and it does have a fully auto mode.

Caps8419 07-09-2004 12:02 AM

i thought the slr uses a sequential shift like "sport" shifting.... like bmw's smg type shifting.....or auto... :?:

Apac102 07-14-2004 04:20 AM

if Im being nosy just say so, but what does your dad do? Im soo jealous your getting an F50. When i grow up, i wanna be one of those guys that buys F50's and vanquishes.

amanthapar 07-14-2004 04:49 AM

budagboy2

TopGearNL 07-14-2004 07:14 AM

It has both I believe, you can put in in full automatic shifting or with those little buttons :)
