Variable turbo's on BMW
The new 535d applies turbo's with two different functions, with this new technology it has the same power as BMW's 4.0l V8.
If anybody needs more info, I'll translate it for you guys. http://www.autoweek.nl/newsdisp.php?cache=no&ID=m2578 http://www.autoweek.nl/images/480/5839.jpg http://www.autoweek.nl/images/480/5835.jpg BTW, the break version looks crappy :? |
wow, really cool... a diesel with the same power as a 4 litre
|
Yep, quite amazing, the diesel engines are getting stronger, better, faster and more fuel efficient, and do keep in my mind diesel fuel is cheaper.
If it were only for higher revs and better sound :( |

In terms of emissions they are getting hit by the govt as not allowed to be used by govt vehicles for their higher emissions for things that matter(none of that global warming bs, but instead acid rain) (especially in america where the diesel fuel isnt as clean due to refinements focusing more on gasoline and sulfur deposits being higher). However, that has nothing realy to do with the cars consumers buy. |

its the same for me |

It looks like some weird turbo cluster fuck

Anyway, this is a variable pression contraption right... so it means it you won't feel it kicking in that much after all the lag right? Then it builds up as you go... That has absolutly nothing to do with more power and after all that added tubing and/or a ALS ya get the same weight as a supercharger that does not lag....c'mon ppl, use your head other to nod at something new but no better.

I think I posted this topic sometimes ago....
http://www.motorworld.net/forum/show...highlight=535d It has 272Bhp but the same torque as the 740d....560Nm...may coz of the 6cylinder engine.... |

j/k  |
No problemo....

btw about the dual turbo, it sounds exactly like the Twin turbo setup on the fd RX-7's

Yes, there are similarities, but this is a first (but certainly first of many) on a diesel engine. Due to the high boost levels and efficciency of a diesel engine (eg. very little exhaust gas at low rpm), engineering a turbo setup that is able to provide both early boost and supply high end power is a major challenge.
This setup uses diferent size turbos and a strategy for managing the boost by manipulating the flow of exhaust gas and intake air. As such, the boost level is higher than on the otherwise pretty much identical 530d single turbo engine all the way from idle to redline, with huge torque (rumorde to pass 500Nm at 1400 rpm!)and an exeptionally wide powerband. Boost level is rumored to be above 1.5 bar. All this power from a smooth running economy engine. Almost makes you forget it'll do 100km/h in 6.5s :D |
