How Serious Are Expiration Dates on Condoms?
 

Fiance and I couldn't find any condoms last night until we finally found one in the bottom of her purse. The Expiration date was April, 2004. I opened it and it seemed fine, lube and all. Afterward, I checked to be sure it didn't break or anything. Anyway, these things are good for like 3 years, so I didn't think that plus or minus a few months would be a big deal. Am I taking a big risk here? It's not an STD concern for me, it's a no baby concern. Just curious.

I think you can keep on reusing the condom til the expiration date. Dunno what happens afterwards though. Maybe the sperm lives?

I am pretty sure after the expiration date they don't protect against anything

As for your question, I really don't know. I guess by a few months it shouldn't be a problem. If it's by years, then it might be a problem.

Not quite right. The non lubed ones have expiration dates as well. Over time due to heat, moisture, ect the latex breaks down. This leads to greater possibilities of breakage or leakage. The same thing happens if you leave it in your wallet or glove compartment too long. You said it didnt break so you should be safe, but get some new ones soon.

Do not ever reuse condoms!!!

As far as I know, on condoms, expiration dates are way "wider" than on other products :D just in case, they put April 2004 when their tests suggest it will be ok even in April 2005 ;) maybe not that much, but probably there is no problem for you... but still... if there is a date, you should throw them away when they are expired ;)

No it hasn't been that long :roll: . She's my fiance of over a year. We just ran out of newer condoms without realizing it and. Just happened to come across this older one that we never used....

Like I said, the lube was still good and the latex was still soft and flexable. It seemed no different than a brand new condom. I was just curious. Thanks for all your responses.

the expiration date is there for a reason. to be sure, just follow it. better safe than sorry. :?

well not to sound prude or anything bu tthis is the Catholic in me coming out but you ARE getting Married you have to be open to the possibility that a child can and probably will happen sooner if not later

has anyone noticed the price increase for condoms like 3 months ago (well here in canada)

i think the pill is the best choice, i have had 2 long term girl friends (both past 6months) and both where on the pill.

I think in Portugal (not sure about this) i can go to a pharmacy tell them u don't have money and they give u free condons. I think i saw this on TV and it is a campaign to fight HIV.

I also remember going to concerts where at the entrance they give u a voucher for a free drink and................a condom. The concert was sponsored by a beer company called Super Bock ( http://www.superbock.pt/ ) and they give us Super Bock condons.

hehehe here in england, my mates gf went to a health centre (similar to pharmacy) and asked for forms of contraception. she got a bag of 30 free condoms, loadsa pills n leaflets on advice for sex! how amazing is that!? btw i heard that going on the pill is bad for the womans sex organs, is it not????? want my gf to go on it if poss (dont tell gis lol he is a little grasser-upper :D )

That's BS. The pill can have an effect on her mood and feelings (cramps in the stomach f.e.), but any decent doctor will be able to give you the pill you need...

i would recoment putting you're gf on the pill, and always having condoms on backups if she ever misses the pill, then if worse comes to worse go to the chemist/doctor, and get "the morning after pill" it is always good to have that pill lying around, for "just incase" (don't tell the chick u have one thoe, because they mite think ohhhh.. i'll just take the monrning after pill.. BIG MISTAKE)

ohhh and even more advice... NEVER TRUST A CHICK when she says she is on the pill, and you have just met.

She used to be on the pill, but she had some issues with it. She said that she never felt good while she was on it. She said that she had more stomach aches and general not feeling well. We decided that condoms would be better because it's a minor inconvenience and this way she feels much better and it in a much better mood. Her doctor and her are trying to figure it out, but for now we'll be using the condoms. I'd rather have to wear a condom and have her feel good day to day than force her to take the pill and be miserable all the time.

Just to be aware.. 1 percent of people regardless of on pill will get pregnent anyway..
and 5-10 percent or so will screw up using it and get pregnent. I certainly wouldnt let that be my only line.

Just remember.. forgetting it even 1 day can get her pregnant. Do you trust her memory that much?

I follow expiration dates on whatever the item may be they are there for a reason even if it may be fine for a little while afterward and maybe you should remind your future wife to clean her purse out every once in awhile. :wink:

Trust me when I say its rough to give up a child for adoption (or if your so inclined abortion). Its also damn rough to sacrifice your life to take care of the kid. You do the deed you do the time though. This is not meant as a complaint, but rather as a warning.

Well I understand that but all I'm saying is that they ARE getting married so they have to be open to that possibility and I'm sure others agree with me on that. The whole idea of marriage to start a Family sooner or later right? that or she want's his money. you just have to be ready for it to happen, and not to sound mean or anything but if you both have to work that's what the parents or Day Care are for.

Parents often arent gonna volunteer for that .. Day care is ok in some cases.. but some people cant afford day care/its unacceptable if the kid never sees mom and dad. There engaged.. not married.. Engagements fall apart.. more often then you want to think.

well I hope that doesn't happen in this case because that really sucks and I no it happens alot but if a child was the reason it fell apart then it probably wasn't meant to be.

I was thinking more from the bad for the child standpoint then the kid caused the breakup standpoint.

I heard it just dont protect you 100% against herpes Aids and that stuff, but I dont think its a trouble for little sperms, you dont get a problem of any babe :(
