Montreal GP - Schumi wins for record 7th time

Today, Michael becomes the only 7 time winner in the history of Formula One for any given circuit. Before this race he was on equal six victories with Senna (@ Monaco).

Another feather in his (loaded) cap!

Good to see the two Ferraris dice with each other. I hoped that Rubens would somehow overtake Michaal just for the fun for it!

Other highlights for those of you who missed the race:
- Both McLarens finish with Kimi coming in 7th despite 5 pitstops (2 more than anyone else - reason: malfunctioning electrics necessitated steering wheel replacement twice and also drive-thru penalty for crossing white line on exit)

- Fisico finished a fine 6th having adopted the same two stop strategy as the Ferraris

- Rubens and Michael were equally fast today trading fastest laps. Rubens got the fastest in the end 1:13.622 v/s 1:13.630 for Schumi

- Ralf drove a faultless race to finish second. His qualification effort was stunning - he was 0.8 secs faster than Montoya while carrying 2 laps of extra fuel. I hope he can keep this performance up.

- Jarno Trulli was out of the race within a couple of metres after the start with driveshaft failures - they suspect that the car launched off the grid hard enough to crack something. Alonso also pulled off the track on lap 45 for the same reasons. Pity - he was driving well till then

- Another engine failure for the luckless Sato. Button's engine survived safely to the end

- Christian Klien seemed to drive a dodgem car instead of an F1 car today - he kept banging some car or the other throughout the race. Made an ass of himself

Schumi is working very hard in Montreal and his rivals had been strong in varies of stages until he's out of the pit for the second time -- business as usual.

"We thought it would be hard to get pole so we concentrated our strategy on the race" - Hard bridgestone is real crap in qualify but brilliant with heavy fuel load/long stop.

UPDATE:

Both Williams' and both Toyotas have been disqualified for having illegal brake ducts, pending appeal by the teams.

3D_CARD 06-13-2004 07:52 PM

  Here is what Sam Michael Said:
""There was no performance gain, and no gain in brake cooling as the inlet area was not bigger. However, the duct is not in compliance with the regulations, therefore we accept the FIA's decision.""

Let me tell u a secret: that speical water pump on Pegueot 307 WRC wasn't going to give any performance advantage, it was there because their team boss want a better looking water-pump with new internal design.

Williams:We just tried our new developed "Hand brake", it performs well but we noticed that's illegal after we tested it in front of some FIA officers.

Mike:Give me a break plz!!! I'm too busy with this fussy TF-104 chassis.

schnell318 06-13-2004 09:56 PM

What!!?? That extremely bad, I thought for once that race seamed to be a little different... ok, it was a bit exciting but a Ferrari 1-2  when is this gonna stop???

Anyway, cheers for the winners.

My take on the Williams & Toyota disqualification:
It isn't exactly the first time that Toyota has been caught cheating, hasn't it
And :
> After the final qualification all cars enter the parc ferme so all cars are technically unchanged when they start the actual race.
> I don't think that either Williams or Toyota has changed the brakeducts during the race
So both Williams- and Toyota cars were illegal during qualification aswell

Damn straight. You'd think that williams being an experience team and all, would know between right and wrong. Anywho, its stupid how none of the FIA officers actually do 'checkings' before qualifying to make sure all the teams are abiding by the rules. Seems like they just wasted the weekend for 2 teams :?

(Williams) The price of coming up with new hand breaks, $X. The look on the drivers faces when having the trophy taken off them - price less.. !

This sucks. Another frikkin FIA mess.

I am with you on this levensnevel! Why couldn't the FIA do something about it while the car was locked in Parc Ferme - meaning give Williams and Toyota the opportunity to change the brake ducts before the race (assuming they have the legal parts). After the race is over they issue this statement thereby wasting both teams efforts on Sunday.

Williams, brakes and Canada have become a real nightmare combination - Last year it was fading, marginal brakes that did it for the team. This year it is illegal brakes.

I believe Prost also won 6 times at a particular circuit twice, but I could be wrong.

SPEEDCORE 06-14-2004 02:11 AM

Isnt it the reason for Parc Ferme, not to touch the cars, if they gave Williams and Toyota a chance to fix that problem, then every other car should be given the same right to fix there cars(trulli's car may of not broken etc) or ofcourse they would of been put on the back of the grid but still it would be fair for the other teams.

Yeah Martin was saying in the race, he has the chance to win 7 same GP another 3-4 times this year, so even if he didnt win in Canada he could of got the record later in the year.

5vz-fe 06-14-2004 02:57 AM

Well, at least tell them that their cars are illegal and if they decided to race, they could start in the pit lane. At least the Williams should still end up in the points....

levensnevel 06-14-2004 03:05 AM

Speedcore,

you're right.
But my point is that when the FIA had checked one of the Williams and Toyota cars right after their final qualification run they would have been disqualified with immediate effect. And both teams would subsequently been banned to participate in the actual race. Suppose that was one bridge too far for FIA. This was, for FIA, the easy way out I guess.

I like the others feel that they should have either disqualified the teams before the start of the race or allowed them to change the brakes and race.

The record I am referring to here is 7 wins at Montreal and not 7 wins in a season.

The other record he was eligible for but failed was six straight wins in a year....

What remains to be seen is will he beat Senna's qually record and his own wins record per season (11).

SFDMALEX 06-14-2004 04:04 PM

Everybody is blaming FIA. But what would happen if Ferrari cheated? The whole world would be on fire, Williams fanboys would start talking so muchb shit that it would be to hard to handel...

3D_CARD 06-14-2004 04:39 PM

A team like Williams won't make such silly mistakes on both cars, especially on a brake demanding circuit, unless there is some real performance advantage they won't change anything  .

kteo2003 06-14-2004 10:24 PM

i also think that they should check the cars while they are at the Parc Ferme and give a punishment....i also think that this was for another time a trick of the ferrari(again my conspiracy theories)...also can anyone tell me why barichellos 2nd time at the pit stop was "longer"
and by the way all the teams do cheat but the ferrari cheats better...

chipanggo 06-15-2004 03:17 AM

the canadian gp was a day of 7's for schumi. 7th win fir the season, 7th win in canada, 77 career wins. looks as well that this year will be his 7th career title. :D
