Scale Model Car Building Q&A

theres a few ppl who wants to build scale models but dont have the knowledge.

if you have question(s), ill gladly answer them

and if others have answers, i dont mind you butting in

racer_f50 06-12-2004 04:14 AM

when building a plastic kit (Tamiya for example), what is the best quality paint brand to use?

stracing 06-12-2004 04:30 AM

actually there is no best one. everyone uses whichever they feel comfortable with. some use automotive paint, some use hobby paint and some even use nail polish. but if you dont want to experiment, tamiya is the way to go.

Thanks dude this deserves to be sticky :D

jon_s 06-12-2004 08:06 AM

hahahahah, think I will be using this one a lot while I make my next car...I was thinking Tamyia Ferrari 360 next...any other suggestions. I think the Enzo should wait untill my skills are a bit better!

stracing 06-12-2004 08:58 AM

yep the 360 would be good, its pretty easy. honda s2000, thats very easy.

How long did you spend on that stracing??.. Why don't you show us some pics of your artwork :)

hmm.. i gotta wait till my semester is over before i start some glue sniffing. I was thinking of something prestigeous... hope theres a Tamiya BMW E46 M3 kit - yummy!

Just sucks how i don't have one of them glamorous display cases.. without them, models are nothing more then dust collectors.

stracing 06-12-2004 09:50 AM

i spent a month on it. all my kits take around that time. its due to the time i leave it to dry. i can buld them in one day but it won't look so nice.

i'll see if i have any pics. nowadays i build them for friends. i'm currently into building a integra type-r dc5 and a toyota "sillycar". i'll take photos of those when its completed

ngudan 06-12-2004 09:57 AM

Cool stuff. Pics would be great - make sure that DC5 specr is champion white! :P

I know what you mean about building a kit in a day. I learnt a good lesson from it though...its a waste of money + time lol.

Btw, which part of Sydney are you from stracing?

stracing 06-12-2004 10:06 AM

yep its in white, my friend wanted it in white.

i'm near the cbd atm

ngudan 06-12-2004 10:17 AM

Coooool. Guess you get your goodies at hobbyco ;)

Man. It is FREEZING tonight.

stracing 06-12-2004 10:38 AM

yea when i first started, now i get all my kits from japan or hong kong. i haven't spent a cent at hobbyco for years now. the only stuff i buy in australia now is paint and maybe brushes. thats it. sandpaper i goto a hardware store. polish i goto supercheap

jon_s 06-12-2004 12:04 PM

You shipe everything from Japan??

Starting to sound like Fast and Furious "Over night parts from Japan!" hahaha

Is there any real difference between the 360spider and the tin top??

stracing 06-12-2004 10:26 PM

whenever i'm not in HK and i need something then yes i get it shipped fom japan. they won't ship aerosol by air and i can't be bothered waiting months for it to come by ship so i just spend the extra dollars to buy it here.

my last trip to HK i bought about 15 kits.

jon_s 06-13-2004 05:20 AM

Ahhhh, so its cheaper! I see.

Have you built all 15 kits!

stracing 06-13-2004 07:25 AM

haven't started!
so many now i don't where which kit i should build

ngudan 06-13-2004 08:38 AM

Whats in the list of 15 stracing?

Besides, if your lazy to make a start, you can always send some to me :D

Btw, how are them pics commin along!?

I recommend Revell paints! Have used them so far..

stracing 06-13-2004 09:45 AM

ferraris, nissans, hondas, bikes, wrc, jgtc, dtm etc. theres more than 15 unbuilt kits.
sadly no pics, you'll just have to wait until i complete the ITR and celica.

yoyohunter 07-09-2008 12:35 AM

Hi All,
As far as the paint question goes it's pretty much a personal choice and local availability :) I happen to work at a hobby shop in New Jersey and we only stock Tamiya Acrylics and the Testors brand (i.e. model master). I personally use tamiya paints because they airbrush really good, but I don't build alot of plastic models. Revell paints are actually made for revell by a third party and are kinda hard to come by, but that said revell-monogram was recently sold so who knows. People don't seem to want to build anything anymore, at least where I work, even our most popular RC Cars come prebuilt (traxxas, hpi)! I will try to up some pics of some interesting things just gotta go find a nice image hosting site that my peer guardian will let me go to :)

Kit Cars

Hi everyone....

I want to build a kit car, first i wanted a caterham but it turned out to be expensive then i found this company called ronart....
any idea if its good

79TA 08-26-2008 06:35 PM

hehe, when you say kit car it sounds like you're more interested in a 1:1 scale model.

check out some of these links for other Lotus Knock offs. I think many of them use V6's (such as the GM 3.6 or 3.8 litre among others.)

As far as model cars go, I never noticed a large difference in price. Usually supplies are what make the difference. What scale are you looking at?
