Members hd setups : Infocus 163" hd projector

Ok we have a new TV king with the monster that RC45 has now, so I shall throw my hat into the ring with my new HD projector and a couple of other toys.

First we have an infocus 163" 720p HD projector zoomed (unzoomed I guess you could get to over a 300" screen easy...if you can find a big enough wall).

Its a lot less noisy than my last projector, a lot brighter, quicker start up and shut down times and no motion blur. Only bad point really is that it doesn't support 1080i/p....maybe next year...

I watched all six star wars movies in HD over xmas back to back from 5pm to 9am with a break for food etc, the first 3 were 1080i rips and were indeed breathtaking, a true "movie theatre experience" from this beast.

8/10

Second we have a modded xbox 360 connected to a media PC, this is a nice idea but it doesn't support many HD formats apart from WMV. You can "transcode" other formats such as Divx and Xvid on the PC with 3rd party software and stream them to the xbox, however with mixed and messy results. Games are of course excellent and "backup games" are free !

5/10 for media streaming and 7/10 for gaming.

Next we have a SnaZio SZ1350 High Definition Network DVD player, this is better than the Xbox for streaming media as it supports nearly all the HD formats and much more such as a built in upscaling DVD player for all your old disks. Sadly this device doesn't support the all important h.264 codec that all the decent HD movies are encoded in (which you can download for free )

http://www.pluggedin.tv/SnaZio-SZ135...=2&category=12

6/10

Lastly its the good old PC directly connected to the projector which plays everything, thanks to the good old karma I have already built a nice collection of over 50 HD movies which take up less than 900 GB and all available on tap without even opening a disc box up. The downside is that I need to run my conroe E6400 at 3 ghz plus to get 100% smooth video from 1080i movies such as the star wars prequels.

8/10

I hope to get a PS3 when they hit the UK as I am going with blu-ray as the discs are almost double the capacity of toshiba hd and are therefore more useful to me.

I hear TG might be shot in HD soon, if thats the case then I think I will upload the usual hi-res TG features first, followed by HD versions shortly after. Anybody that doubts HD hasn't seen it set up properly, as RC45 will probably confirm its a real bitch to get a good picture of and pictures never really do it justice, the blurry one at the end with the Xbox360 is just for scale !

 what can I say more ? Fantastic !! BTW what do you think of that : http://www.engadget.com/2006/01/09/p...-and-personal/ ?? I wonder if the image can be that good with such a beast :?:

Jabba 01-06-2007 11:10 AM

Its ok if you can make do with 103" I guess :P

yg60m 01-06-2007 11:14 AM

 size doesn't matter says my wife

sameerrao 01-06-2007 11:35 AM

Love the set up Jabba. What is the home theatre set up - receiver/speakers?

Jabba 01-06-2007 11:41 AM

hmm, now ya asking, its a very old Sony 5.1/DTS amp, active sub etc. It does the job for now but needs upgrading asap.

yg60m 01-06-2007 12:01 PM

Just a question about the ambiance lighting : do you have to be in the dark to see the films on the screen or can you let some lights on ?

Jabba 01-06-2007 12:03 PM

This one is a lot better, I had several sets of Xmas ligts on and it was still very good, it also has extra bright mode if you have stronger lighting on. Dark for it though is always gonna be best, just like when you go to the cinema I guess.

yg60m 01-06-2007 12:14 PM

I forgot, another question : you mentioned that you built a collection of HD films, What do you mean ? You encoded them with HD codecs ? What is the source for building them ? Because it has to come from a HD or even higher quality isn't it ?

I would be curious to know the processus if it doesn't annoy you and isn't too complicated

Jabba 01-06-2007 12:20 PM

All downloaded from newsgroups or bit torrent, the sources are usually direct HD streams from Sky HD or HD channels in the US. Movies can be over 20 gigs though so a fast internent connection is a good idea.

non newzbin members will only see one page of content here :

I guess I should upload something so you will see what all the fuss is about.

yg60m 01-06-2007 12:23 PM

Ok, thank you for your answers

stmoritzer 01-06-2007 02:37 PM

amazing :faint: set-up Jabba !

I'm learning a lot about HD here in the HD section

Jabba 01-06-2007 03:25 PM

Yeh 7.1 would rock, I guess I will have to look at where the speakers have to go to see if its feasable for a future upgrade.

I am thinking of uploading in the DL club 720p fantastic four at 4 gig.

Why ?

It is one of the best movies I have seen so far to show off 720p, is quite a small size at "only" 4 gig and I have seen it run smoothly on a P4 3.2 GHZ.

bmagni 01-06-2007 03:35 PM

nice friggin setup !! projectors rule ! Please let us know whenever you get the 1080p one !

Preliminary response of the UHDV was somewhat negative. This was not because of the lack of the promised technology, but more in the fact that it was too good. Some viewers got motion sickness when viewing the video image because the image was so close to reality.[1]

18 minutes of uncompressed UHDV footage consumes 3.5 terabytes of data and 1 minute of footage consumes 194 gigabytes.

Think of poor old saddie downloading that with his 56k modem.

That would be priceless. If he starts downloading now he'd be able to show it to his grandchildren...if I was him I'd include it in the will tho. "And the first one who gets to watch the video..."

ROTFLMAO

Pimp Racer 01-07-2007 05:58 PM

Damn Jabba I love that setup. Now all ya need is a PS3 to go with the projector. Come on you know you want one damnit! Do you got any plans on purchasing a PS3 anytime soon?

TT 01-07-2007 07:28 PM

This setup just blows the modern world away! Amazing!!

Max Power 01-07-2007 07:37 PM

the 'free movies' u refer to, are they rips off hd channels?...cause those have a lot of artifacts..plus they're formated to 16:9...i dl siper man 2...and fofth element and they weren't that good :(

btw awesome setup and i like how u watched sw back to back
that's big 8)

Jabba 01-08-2007 05:18 AM

There are a few bad ones mostly with audio synch issues that are easily fixed.

I had the same problem with spider man 2, but its a codec issue (if its the same version that I downloaded), try updating your mpeg2 codec and I bet that it will play perfectly !

bmagni 01-08-2007 12:27 PM

what about considering this one instead of the Sony ?? :P

hahah thats great...how much is that ?

bmagni 01-08-2007 12:38 PM

price hasn't been announced, it has just been shown @ the CES.

dutchmasterflex 01-08-2007 12:48 PM

163" is just insane Jabba.. and your almost terrabyte collection of HD rips is ridiculous!!

but it's too bad you're only running at 720p with a screen that size..

Check this out if you're planning on upgrading ;)

ae86_16v 01-08-2007 09:48 PM

I'm definetely no expert but for me it's hard to spot the difference between 720p and 1080p. Upgrading from standard TV to 720p is where the really big difference is.

dutchmasterflex 01-09-2007 11:16 AM

I've heard you can only really see differences from 720 to 1080 when you're viewing on screens 40" and bigger..

I'm sure you'll be able to see more when you've got 163" of screen.

No.1 04-20-2007 12:19 PM

This is a SETUP! In capitals!

Nice looking at 720p.... makes me wonder whether it's worth a few extra quid to go the whole 1080p :bah: We definitely will have to go with LCD/Plasma at my house though - no dedicated cinema rooms here

I think Xbox looks killer on that too :good:

That upscaling DVD player looks like it does a lot of stuff for not that much £££ :)

Jabba 04-20-2007 03:15 PM

Well when I got that projector at Xmas, a decent 1080p one was over £10,000. I bet as you say though they will be a fraction of that price by this Xmas.

Doesn't seem worth it at those sorts of prices, but as with everything, early adopters pay the price... even though without their support the tech would get nowhere :bah:

No words..

Jabba 05-22-2007 03:48 PM

Holy shit, thats 1920x1080p so I am not surprised that you are happy with it :D

That spec would have cost an easy £5,000 not so long ago, hence why I had to make do with 1280x720 :(

The sooner you can hook that up to a HD source and post some pictures up the better.

Congratulations and I hope you have lots of fun with it (bastard  ) :D

Jabba 05-22-2007 04:19 PM

"FREE Sony PlayStation3 with early orders" you missed out then ??

Hook your PC up to it and download from the Jabba's 100+ HD movie collection

Jabba 05-22-2007 04:55 PM

Well that has to be the ultimate bargain then, and make is all the more sweeter.

Jabba 05-22-2007 05:01 PM

Maybe they replaced the model. Also remember that it will only ever look at its best at its native resolution of 1920x1080.

Jabba 05-22-2007 05:13 PM

Well you have been damn lucky then, just like your lcd monitor has a native resolution (usually the highest) and anything under that, will look horrible, (computer text especially)

Jabba 05-22-2007 05:21 PM

I would go with "the fantastic four" 4 gb ripp just as a taster, or any of the 1.4gb ripps of "heroes" are very impressive.

Jabba 05-22-2007 05:37 PM

ahh actually that is 720p I think, so maybe we should think of something that is 1080p to give it a proper test, and for sure, its an unbelievably addicitive bug, you wont want to watch SD ever again once you have got a taste of HD.

Bizi Jones 05-22-2007 06:58 PM

what's the lamp life on either of your projectors (2-3k hours?)...$ to replace?

Jabba 05-23-2007 04:48 AM

I upgraded my projector before I needed a new bulb but its around the 2,500 hour mark I think which is a good few years for me, latest prices were about £280 when I last checked.

gis 05-23-2007 02:14 PM

hehe you scare me if I get a bug bad Im very lost...I have to many bugs as it is, my wallet cant take many more of them....
Then you have made a HUGE mistake gettin a HD projector, especially a 1080p one,LOL he is right though espen, once you watch your first 1080p movie your gonna be hooked,im hooked and its just 720p that i watch

Jabba get him the terminator 2 1080p rip, that impressed even me on my TV :D
