View Full Version : First car
Ok im gonna be graduating in about 2 weeks from High school. and if i can get enough money from graduation im hoping to get a 5.0 Mustang LX (gts weigh more than the LX), but the GT does look better. anyways do you think i should get the Mustang or try and save up more money for a 88 Porsche 944 Turbo S? With the porsche i would probably have a more realible car, but if it would need to be fixed it would very expesnive, also if i got the Porsche my modability wouldnt be exactly to good. with the 5.0 i could easily get it into the 13s for like 1200 or so. But the realibilty issue would come into play. So what do you guys think? Also if youd like to donate to the Lets get Fred a car foundation that would be cool. just email me to find out. donations of as low as 1 dollar are appreciated. plz make donations availible in USD not euros.
problem with those old german cars though man, is when they need to be fixed they are very expensive too. Id also consider getting a 88 Trans AM GTA. What other cars are out there. Because next year me and my friend are gonna do the AKA rally, hes gonna probably have his 5.0, and i want something realiable but also responds well to mods. Int he mustang i would clearly add suspension upgrades.

id say around 8000 maybe 9500 as a max amount of money. I want something thats fast and realible. Also i want it to be a manual, and as my first manual car i want it to not have to many known tranny problems.
The 3000GTs had alot of realiblity issues. I used to be all into that car till i did some research. Seems the turbos had issues, boost control problems, and they handled like boats. sorry but i also dont like VW. Im looking at used C4 corvettes and they are in my price range. Problem would be insurance.

IMO, then you might want to skip on a Porcshe. Chances are you'll just be inheriting someone else's headache. Don't get me wrong, I love Porsche's, but these cars are a little on the high maintainance side if you just want a dead nuts reliable car and you don't want to spend much on it for upkeep. What about a Mitsu Eclipse? Maybe the first gen ones? Of course you would have to look at these cars very carefully for problems with AWD, if you get the AWD model. How much do the earlier Impreza RS model's cost used? Frankly I would trust the Scooby's reliability any day of the week over a Mitsu. Then if you wanted to save up some money and down the road buy a nice aftermarket turbo kit for it. Even as-is they are very wonderful driving machines.

well..... being that my older brother had a 92 Mustang 5.0 LX , and he drove it hard.. in the 4 years he owned it, not one thing needed replacement, other then sets of rubber! the clutch was as strong when he sold it as when he bought it (he sold it in '99)
that beings said... usually people who own sports cars love to go fast in them... often clutch's go out... but that isnt terribly expensive. high milage cars usually need new water pumps as well.
the 3000GT VR4, and Stealth R/T were quite fast, and contrary to what was said above, they handle nicely as well (not compared to a Z06 or Viper) the biggest problem was the clutch was really ment for a V6 N/A, not a twin turbo. aftermarket metalic clutch plates would be the way to go there
all being said, id definately recomend the LX 5.0
but i like thte T/A, and Stealth R/T platform as well
18, and you have 8,000! wow, i wish i had your wallet when i was 18
good job, good luck

Not much of a comparison really. If you're into drag racing then the mustang is the only sensible option. If you like going round corners (mustangs don't!) then get the porsche. Simple!
Porsche will be much more expensive to fix, not much more to run though i shudn't think. But it would anihilate a mustang through the twisties.

Would you ever consider a small FWD car first? If it's your first car, getting a powerful V8 is not a good idea....if you want to live.
My hate for FWD has grown, been driving a honda for 2 years., its got 200 Horses, 195 lbs of tq will do the 1/4 in 15.9, just alittle above my friends stock 5.0 convertible gt. OO trust me ill be fine in the car. If i were to get the stang i would get a complete suspension upgrade, and bigger brakes of course. See im guessing ill have 8 grand, cuz i can make about 1500 in a month at work or so, im banking on maybe 3-5 grand from graduation, which is more than enough for a 5.0, but if i saved im trying to figure what could i get that would match it.
On the 1G eclipse thing, the problem would be my hieght, im 6'3" and still growing.

hahahaha that reminds me of when i thought they were ok, and i tried to get a test drive... i got in, and bam, i had to twist my head with a good seat position (not idiot like almost lying down)
i am 6'2"
Mustang LX 5.0's dont handle badly~! ask anybody who has driven one, or owns one (not withstanding the convertable)
the largest problem was that the car has little mass on the rear contact patches, which induces fun smoke shows, but slower accelleration runs.

Why don't you get a Nissan S13 240sx or S14 and then get an SR20DET for it. Then you will probably have some more money left over for some other parts. I'm pretty sure the car will get into the 13s with that but its made for cornering so you can have fun with that too. It is quite reliable if maintained properly.
I was actually looking at the S-14s last night on ebay, they are my favorite of the imports from japan, they look like just fun ass cars. But id rather own it later in my life were i had alot of money for tires, cuz i know i would be ripping a new set every other day trying to drift in those bad boys. Right now it looks like im gonna go witht he 5.0 LX it has all that i need, and i can upgrade it extremely cheap, and it responds incredibly well to mods. I saw on speedchannel when they added a full Flowmaster Thunderamerica exhaust set it increased HP by 30, and tq by like 15. incredible.

If you can win some money add that to the dosh, and buy a 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500. I know what you are thinking these are rare and they are, but if you can win extra dosh and one pops up for cheap grab it with both hands bud.

Lol, I'd imagine you'd be ripping through a set of tires ever day with that Mustang. That thing has way more torque and no limited slip differential I think.

Id say go for the stang... got a GT for my first car... and from what ive read on the mustang forums, the 5.0L engine is pretty much the most reliable engine Ford has ever built. They are bullit proof. The only problem is if you are going to seriously mod one you're looking at either a supercharger or an engine swap, because N/A 5.0s make like 350rwhp max... But then again, engine swaps in them are quite easy and cheap... Also, if ANYTHING breaks, you can just replace it with an upgraded aftermarket part and mod ur car that way. lol. Otherwise, I love T/As but I would go for the 350, the 305 just sucks... the only problem is GM made a shitty tranny for those cars...
