Well, the outage was a big one in the north-east of the States and also in a part of Canada.. pretty scary.. I already said it.. Skynet will come :D

yeh there was a massive power outage, aparantley one power station provies power 2 5 states, and some of canada - bs!

i think it was caused by the electric feild of a low flying UFO, cuz it has happend before, and power stations have counter measures not to be affected by lighting strikes

Compared to what you've experianced I think mine is worse than yours. A few years ago, the powerplant at my place didn't work and the whole city didn't have power for more than 24 hours. :)

Yeah I live in Toronto and the power went out right when I started doing a virus check for my comp. Its funny how Canada is blaming the US and the US is blaming Canada. Every radio station is talking about it and I HAVE TO FRIGIN CABLE :x. Public transit isnt working, Go trains say that there is a computer problem, no subway. All of the street lights were out. I live beside a somewhat busy street and the traffic was backed up for atleast a kilometer. Yey..........

According to the news, lightning het the power plant and started a fire. Which knocked down the grid.
For all you people saying it's only a power outage, it's not a big deal. Heh, in New York City, there are 16 million people! These people were walking down the Brooklyn Bridge, they were trapped in Subways and elevators!
It screwed up numerous TV stations. Of course it's gonna be news, this doesn't happen very often.

I have been without power for 20 hours, that's long time without downloading any car vids, LOL. No, really, it is. Everything from the Manitoba to the Quebec border in Canada was gone, about 10 million people and then in the U.S., it was massive, as Detroit, Albany, New York City, Cleveland, and many other cities totally about another 40 million people are without power. It is the biggest blackout ever in North America. The power companies are so stupid, I didn't realize that they didn't have an automatic cutoff grid, so that this wouldn't happen, oh well, learn from your mistakes and just don't repeat them.

Robruf, they were supposed to have an automatic cutoff, thats why people don't understand why it happened. This is what happened in 1977 I think it was, it was supposed to be changed so they don't go down in a domino effect.

As for why it happened, nobody seems to know. CNN said yesterday that lightning hit the plant. Some say it was a fire, some say it actually started in Cleveland. They already ruled out terrorism, which is good for the paranoid people.

It didn't get bad at all, you would think people would go looting and stuff, but nope. Not us anyway, just the canadiens. LOL! At least they didn't let it get out of hand.
People on the news said it was kind of like a big party in New York City, everybody was outside thier houses and on the streets walking around drinking.

From this event we can see that electricity plants would be an easy target for terroists. They just have to strike one plant and a number of states would be in chaos.

Hope our fellow Canadian members (and Americans) are ok. No air con in the thick summer heat must suck.

The fact that a single plant provided power for such a big area is strage though... at my parents town, 6000 or 7000 souls, I never saw a complete blackout... the town is divided in little areas and when there is a problem, it's only in a single one... ok, if a terrorist would destroy the whole plant, the blackout would be allover...
But to know a single plant provides power for millions of ppl is scary...

Apparently it is not because one plant provides power for all those states and provinces, but because the failure of one plant causes other plants to go down with it. Don't really know what happened as there is not much about this on the news.

the most fucked up thing is about this whole power outage?

Stupid Pigs huh
All i know is that there are a ton of people pissed that it happened. All this talk about deregulation and whatnot. They even had people on the news that said the equipment is out of date and the power compnaies (monopolies) won't upgrade becuase it will eat into their profits. I'm expecting an example to be made about it. I highly doubt this will happen again.

Just to play asshole pocket-protector boy for the evening (or at least up to my somewhat shaky knowledge base)....

The deal with the power grid is that it depends on power load, and maintaining it. The grid is made up of a bunch of power plants and power lines crossing all over Canada and the US - think of it like a power supply Internet, in a way :) Basically, each particular part of the grid has a load placed upon it by users. When a particular grid is running low on power to keep up with the load, it gives a friendly nudge to a neighboring grid, and goes, "Hey, buddy, can you spare me some power?". Normally, the next power grid goes, "Sure, here, take some of my capacity." And so, the load is made up, and things are hunkey dorey.

Now (and this is kind of a guess), if the power went down in one region or another (I'm not going to be pointing fingers here, either), the grid in question can't keep up with the load, may it be from a busted power plant, a dropped line, or whatnot. Basically, that grid will start yammering at the next grids to feed it. If it's not stopped in time (either by human intervention, or by computer/mechanical means), the neighbor grid will OK the request, then realize that it's on overload. So that grid bugs the next neighbor for more power, and the chain continues. This will keep going until (a) one bit of equipment in the chain of power gets overloaded, and totally busts, or (b) one or more of those neighboring grids isolate themselves off the grid, and the underpowered grids get caught pants-down with their dick in their hands. With that, there's no power going anywhere, and then you have people hoofing Captain-Caveman foot-travel style out of Manhattan, and a lot of pissed people with no power to use.

Again, no pointing fingers here. The cause could be anything from a busted powerplant, to a mass of downed wires, so we'll have to see how it goes.
