RISE IN TEMPERATURE EXPECTED OVER BANK HOLIDAY AS LOVE HUNGRY MOTORISTS ‘FLIRT IN THE FAST LANE’

* Britain turning into a nation of Romeos and Juliets on the road
* Men are the kings of the road when it comes to flirting
* Southern drivers take chequered flag in flirting stakes
* New Vehicle Body Language (VBL) emerging

Traffic may be at a standstill this Bank Holiday weekend but even if engines are idling the pulses of millions of love-struck British motorists will be racing according to a new nationwide survey. It reveals that around half of all drivers take advantage of increasing highway hold ups to flirt with any road user who catches their eye and sets their engine racing.

The survey, commissioned by car manufacturer GM Daewoo to celebrate the launch of their limited edition Matiz Flirt, found that while grid-locked roads seem set to inflict motoring misery on millions of drivers, for the fast growing army of roadway Romeos and Juliets traffic jams are not so much a source of frustration but an opportunity for some light-hearted flirting.

Men are Kings of the Road:

The survey, conducted by renowned psychologist Dr David Lewis – the man who first coined the term ‘road rage’ found that of the sexes, men are the kings of the road with six out of 10 confessing to frequently being attracted to another motorist compared to a third of female drivers.

Almost half of all younger motorists (18-34 year old) admitted to making moves on fanciable fellow drivers.

Southern Drivers Take Chequered Flag:

The survey revealed similar patterns of behaviour nationwide across different regions of the UK. However, drivers in the South of England took the chequered flag with four out of 10 confessing they regularly flirted with other road-users compared to motorists in the North where only a quarter admitted to ever doing so.

New Language of Love:

So common has fast lane flirting now become that a new language of love is developing on the nation’s roads. Called the Vehicle Body Language (VBL) of Love, it consists of a precisely choreographed sequence of unspoken chat-up lines that enable flirtatious drivers to get to know members of the opposite sex who are stuck in cars beside them.

Of the many VBL’s identified by the survey, the top silent signals of attraction were:

* A long lingering look (79% of men and 66% of women)
* One in five of men said they sat up straighter so as to look taller
* One in 10 puffed out their chest and pulled in their stomach to look fitter – despite being difficult to see in a car!
* Four out of 10 women checked their appearance in the mirror
* A third of women tidied their hair or adjusted their make-up
* One out of five men tried to edge their car a little closer to the object of their affection
* One in 10 scribbled their mobile number on their palms and held them up to the other driver
* One in 20 noted down the number of the other person’s car
* One in 10 would drive the same stretch of road again in the hope of getting a second meeting

Desperate Measures:

Although not recommended, the survey also revealed the extent that one love-struck driver went to meet the woman who subsequently became his wife – he deliberately drove into the back of her car!

Courtship Rituals:

According to psychologist Dr David Lewis, author of the The Secret Language of Success who analysed the survey findings on behalf of GM Daewoo, love in the fast lane has developed a unique set of courtship rituals which follow a clearly defined path: "My research using hidden cameras to record these roadside Romeos and Juliets in action has shown that, when one driver fancies another, his or her first move is to attract attention to themselves. They usually do this by making a specific move: a woman will run her hand through her hair or ostentatiously check her make-up in the mirror. Men typically sit up straighter and puff out their chests to appear leaner and fitter than they may actually be. Some of the less sophisticated younger males will even deliberately honk their horns to draw attention to their vehicles and themselves."

Dr Lewis continues: "However, when the attraction is mutual the next stage is an exchange of what are termed simply smiles in which the teeth remain covered. At the same time there may be an exchange of mutual eye-brow flashes. In this the brows rise and fall for around one fifth of a second."

The ‘Eyes’ Have It:

"The purpose is to draw attention to the eyes. If all proceeds according to plan the next move is a broad upper smile in which the top row of teeth are uncovered while eye-contact is maintained. Throughout all this the other facial muscles remain relaxed as does the posture. Finally, if time allows, they may wind down their windows and attempt to exchange a few words. We have also observed some men quickly scribbling their mobile phone numbers on the palm of their hand and displaying it to the female.

"If the pair have clicked then it is possible both will pull up further down the road where they can safely park and exchange even more personal details."

Dr Lewis concludes: "It is impossible to say how often this happens, but even if the drivers are just in cars that pass on the road, they report enjoying and feeling happy as a result of even a brief encounter."

"Despite growing congestion on our roads it’s great to see from the survey that UK drivers are still able to have some harmless fun behind the wheel of their cars," comments Rob Smettem, director of marketing and public affairs at GM Daewoo. "The Matiz is a cheeky little car that loves the city and we hope that the introduction of our limited edition Matiz Flirt will help these innocent but enjoyable roadside assignations become even more popular in the future – when it’s safe to do so of course."

I've always said the place you consistently see cute girls is on the road. Of course, 'm not sure if that's because it's a quick glance and you can't see much below the neck! :D

Actually, one of my very good friend's brother did exactly this. He was stuck in a traffic jam and there was a girl int he next car...he started talkign to her, and lo and behold, they ended up going out for almost 2 years!
