For those too lazy to read the article:
5 kids went into a cave. Only 1 came out free and clear. One other is in the hospital inside a hyperbaric chamber. They won't officially say what killed the other three, but it's most definately carbon monoxide. The caves are filled with it. They aren't the first to die of it in there, and most likely won't be the last.
The Mississippi River Bluffs are lined with caves. Hundreds of them. Most are only accessable by climbing the cliff a bit, but they aren't that hard to get too. I've been down there, but never bothered to venture into the caves.
The kid that made it out and ran for help actually ended up talking with my moms friend. The cave this happened at is about 2 blocks from my moms work.
They will be filling that cave in with sand. They filled up a bunch of others a while ago, some even have a cement wall built at the entrance. Sadly, most caves won't be able to be filled in. As most of them are far to inaccessible with the required equipment.
 :(

Man, thats horrible. Instead of our schools teaching us shit that we will never use, they should teach us stuff that will expand our common sense. Actual real-life stuff that could be of some benefit.

Can't they put a sign up or something (I know ppl like to destory signs, but at least try to put one up)

There are signs. Most people ignore them. It's the normal teenage thing to think you are invincible and it isn't going to happen to you. Besides, most caves are well hidden. So signs would be useless.

If they are stupid enough to ignore the signs, I guess they won't be smart enough to contribute to the society anyways.....that said, it's still sad to hear ppl die so easily ..... :(

not just kids
here there are signs not to swim in creeks/rivers because of crocodiles yet adults still think its safe to have a swim or splash around the edge

that is very sad, caving can be quite fun and adventrious, with the right equitment, or the right prepared cave, but on the other hand quite dangerious.

Hmm.. Nature has a certain way to pure different species by eliminating those who cannot survive (i.e. weak, stupid etc..) Sutre it is no comfort to parents but thats the way it goes.

well, some people will never learn
they shouldnt block the cave, they should just put up a sign, say dont enter or enter at your own risk. if they still go in and die, then its their own fault

It happens naturally. But this time it's because of a fire. Apparently somone must have started a fire in there a few days before, the carbon Monoxide levels were insanely high.
Why plug the caves to save stupid people from themselves?
Their deaths prompted St. Paul officials to place a plaque at an entrance to the caves warning of the dangers of going inside. According to a press release — Tuesday's victims saw the sign before they entered the cave.

if the caves are unsafe why they dont close them?? options can be wood, wire, fences, or whatever, i believe that thats lack of public safety
if the caves are unsafe why they dont close them?? options can be wood, wire, fences, or whatever, i believe that thats lack of public safety
Nothing to do with publis safety... how about public education
We do not need our hands held every minute of the day...
Should hot water be outlawed?
What about matches?
Gasoline?
Wooden boxes?
Plastic bags?
Cows?
Wet roads?
???
Many things in life can hurt you - that does not mean you have to be "saved" from everything.

Good point i hate the nanny state as clarkson describes it if we let every tradgedy affect the way we lead our lives then we would never do any thing. Anyway 666fast said there we loads of caves some filled in with cioncrete but too many to do them all

oh yeah of course but i mean, if those caves are soo dangerous why not to close them?, for ex.a construction, its closed to public.. why? well cuz is dangerous, if not only about public "education", i mean u cant expect education from no one. public education comes when ppl should know that the caves are dangerous, but really tell me how often u see that ppl teach that to kids?, u said "you cand be saved from everything, yes thats true but why not to be saved from harmful caves?

because as 666fast said there are loads of them it would be a huge task and i guess like everything it comes down to cash we can't prevent everything otherwise people would be able to do stupid stuff.
Good example quite often i have seen kids jumping off quay sides at various places near my home in dorset, then you read in the local paper serveral times each summer about some kid who is seriously injured due to their own stupidity. What do you want them to do build a wall or fence on evry quayside in Britain?, The World?

no, but anways is just an option to prevent more deaths from caves, i really dont give a shi** if they close them, is not my problem neither yours so i wil not discuss furder more

Construction sites are closed because most times they are PRIVATE property.
If you are too stupid to read/save yourself/ or give a shit... why should I or anyone else have to foot the buill to save your ass?
If the cave was a great big 100ft diameter hole in the ground in front of the local junior school - THAT is a public safety concern.... and would need a fence (which poeple could still climb) or some covering as it is in "an area of common living".
But - as in this case, the cave is a ways up an embankment and out of the way - if went there - YOU went there KNOWING it was NOT A GOOD IDEA!!!
I say let others learn from their terrible mistake.
A very sad event - but they chose to ignore the warning signs.

I feel bad for these kids but its a combination of youthful curiousity and natural selection at work. Cant really fight it effectively :|

Just as Al123 said, it's simply too expensive to plug all the caves. Even if they were to try, they can't plug all of them. Some have natural gas leaking out of them, I wonder what would happen if a cave was full of gas and a rock fell causing a spark?
KABOOOOM!
As for the others, they are too far back to fill in. Just entirely too expensive and time consuming. The one the kids died is filled in. They did it by cutting down a bunch of trees, chopping trees into small logs, tossed them in and carried dirt in by hand! Yes, they filled it up bucket by bucket.
This particular cave was really dangerous. The opening was tiny and it was very very deep. Goes back something like 1000 feet. The firefighters that went in had to crawl through the opening with all their crap behind them. They had to put their gear on inside the cave. Supposedly, their oxygen tanks are supposed to last an hour. They used them up every twenty minutes. That should give you an idea of what it's like to move around inside the cave.
RC45 is right. Education is the key to stop people from dying in the caves. People just don't realize just how dangerous they really are. It's not just the gas and carbon monoxide you have to worry about. People have died from falling rocks, some have even drowned inside the caves. You could also get lost and end up trapped in there!
Another reason why they wouldn't all get plugged up is the historical value. I don't care if they were plugged, but some history geeks would be upset. A few of the bigger caves have been turned into restaraunts and such. One is an old ass bar that Al Capone and his boys used to visit.
